I think your video Demos of the Hydrasynth are hands down the best I've seen, and that's amongst some pretty stiff competition. Hearing your videos, is how I hear my HS Dlx, although I can't play so well, you bring out the musicality I love about this synth. I can get lost in a single preset for hours, tweaking, nudging, tasting... every time it's an adventure. I hope you will do more videos, I think you provide the justice the HS deserves. ❤️

Thanks so much for your feedback! I'm pleased you like the videos and I agree this synth can be very musical and can take us to new places. You may be aware that I released sound banks of single Hydra sounds and a bank of Multi patches will be forthcoming. I love the fact that people can now play my sounds and do their own thing with them. Plus the income from these helps me to carve out the time to make new videos, so hopefully more to come...

I thought I wanted a Moog One- Never Mind...
@synthuniverse2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing! As owner of both I can say that while the Moog One is a dream-synth and does have a great user-interface, it is not always straightforward to great results with. It's a very different beast to the old Moog polys and the sheer number of parameters to tweak can be overwhelming. The deeper the synth, the longer it takes to work out its sound and personality I guess...
@MusicWizard852 жыл бұрын
😅 Same here. Moog One is a bit too complex for me. I'm a big fan of intuitive, easy to understand layouts. HS Deluxe is at the top of my wishlist! I own a Korg Wavestate and while it sounds incredible, the layout of everything isn't very intuitive or amateur friendly. I needed to watch many YT videos to figure it all out. The approach Hydrasynth takes is much more logical for my brain plus 16 voices of beautiful bliss.

One of the nicest things about this keyboard, aside from it being big fun to play, is the placement of the headset jack at the front left. They provide both 3.5mm and 1/4 sockets, so no hunting for adapters or trying to feel for the right spot on the back of the unit in a dark venue.

@synthuniverse2 жыл бұрын
Many thanks for the feedback! I started with the original Hydra keyboard plus the desktop which meant I could layer 2 Hydras. The Deluxe does makes that easier. Also I guess it's the keyboard size and ribbon that give it the edge for some people. The portability of the Explorer is great though - combine one of those with a Desktop unit and you would have serious synth power that could be carried in a rucksack. For standard gigging/ studio/ recording use however, I would go with the Deluxe. Good luck with with it!

Love the percussive keypad,. Seriously thinking of buying this synth, and the cost of the sound bank library would be worth it for this one alone....The use of an expression pedal to switch elements of the sound on and off shows that the Hydrasythn is a real performer's keyboard.
@synthuniverse Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback and for sharing! Yes, you can assign almost any parameter to performance controls such as an expression pedal, or the ribbon etc. It's the most expressive synth I've used by a long way. Many of the sounds in my sound banks utilise these abilities, even if it's just to damp the filter cutoff. I love being able to change the sound while continuing to play with two hands.

@@synthuniverse I am still thinking about the Jupiter X. I can get an almost new one for almost the same price. What would be your opinion if I may ask (and if you know an answer)
@synthuniverse Жыл бұрын
@@Geepstar Not sure if it helps but I'll give my opinion. I have heard the Roland but haven't used it. It seems to be a great synth for those who want the Roland 'sound' but don't want to invest in a vintage analog unit. The raw sounds, interface and multiple confusing sound engines of the J X seem to have divided opinion however and probably disappointed many who just wish they would re-issue something 'classic'. What I like about the Hydrasynth, as I've said elsewhere in comments, is that it has no legacy and is therefore baggage-free and future-facing. It has its own sound and is not pretending to be anything else. I think it's ideal if you love creating and tweaking sounds and you have those 'what-if?' questions of modulation and experimentation. On the other hand, if you just want great smooth legacy pads, pianos etc and a simple interface then the J X might be a better bet.

I actually bought a Hydrasynth Deluxe a few days ago again (it was on discount and I could not resist). I also own a Novation Summit. The Hydrasynth can sound great, however you need to work harder to get the sound you like. You can compare the Hydrasynth with those so-called healthy rice-wafels. The Summit is a rice-wafel covered in caramel. It tastes delicious from the start, but it will always taste like caramel. The Hydrasynth is a blank rise-wafel but it comes with a lot additional flavours that you have to apply yourself. In other words you can make the Hydrasynth as tasty (or disgusting) as you want. Having said so, that Hydrasynth still misses some essential features to my opinion: - No support for sostenuto - No dotted timings in the arp - No true bi-timbality on the Deluxe
@synthuniverse Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing and for your analogy to rice-wafels! Yeah the Hydra is definitely deep and requires effort. As you suggest, no synth is perfect I guess but overall the features are well thought-through and well implemented.

Have you ever used up all 16 voices? What are your favorite things about HSD that make it stand out from other synths? What are you using to hold all your cords together in the back? I love how it has an intuitive interface for any skill level but then also has more deep dive stuff for advanced users to further tweak. Awesome sounding demo!
@synthuniverse2 жыл бұрын
Many thanks for your feedback and questions! Yes I have used up the 16 voices on occasions - particularly playing big chords then you get a bit of note-stealing. But 16 voices in Unison mode is crazy - too powerful to be useful. No synth is perfect and every synth has its own personality. The UI is definitely a strong point of the HSD. As a modular Eurorack user, I love the fact that I can ask a 'What would happen if?' question and then answer it. This is rare on a polysynth - to get that amount of modulation possibilities while still getting musical results quickly. And being able to play chords unlike with a modular synth. I've also been surprised at how warm and thick the sounds can be, although you really have to dig deep into the Oscillator Mutants to achieve it. Like any deep synth, if you only skim the surface you could be left disappointed. I think it's a synth that rewards curiosity and imagination. I hope that helps! The cord tidy is simply some plastic oak effect trunking that usually gets stuck to walls.

Very soon I'll be releasing two Hydra single sound banks - if you're a subscriber you'll be notified. A Multi bank will be some time next year - can't say when. Cheers

So I am thinking the voice-string split is besed off Tomita, which was based off ....?
@synthuniverse Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question! Tomita was a classical musician first so he probably tried to emulate the female vocal sounds he heard in opera on his Moog synthesizers

I’m considering this keyboard or the mpc key 61. Im interested in sound exploration but also the composition. Which keyboard could help me make music more vividly and freely???
@synthuniverse Жыл бұрын
Hello thanks for your question. I'm not familiar with the MPC Key 61 but it's clearly a production workstation. If you want the ability to make complete grooves like a DAW and with sampled realistic sounds then this would be the one to go for. However, the Hydrasynth is very effective for raw synth exploration that will inspire you to compose. Although it can do decent realistic string, brass & key sounds - that's not its forte. Its distinctiveness comes from creating interesting/ original/ musical synth sounds in my experience. Hope that helps!

Hello friend, can I ask you a couple of things? I currently have a ni s61 mkii, and I would like to know, are the keys for the hydrasynth deluxe 73 of good quality? do they feel quality, do they make noise? and my last question is, could i use the hydrasynth as a midi controller to play vsts on pc? And could I configure the sensitivity of the keys and also the sensitivity of the aftertouch on the keyboard, if I use it with a midi controller via USB to the PC? or can I only configure the sensitivity for the internal sounds of the keyboard? Please, you will love to know your opinion. Thank you very much and a big hug from Spain.
@synthuniverse Жыл бұрын
Hello - to answer your questions: in my experience the Deluxe keybed is perfectly usable. It's lighter than some high-end quality Fatar key actions but then you would expect that. Also they must have had to make compromises in implementing poly aftertouch. I've played the keyboard a lot and it's still fine. Yes you can configure the velocity and aftertouch in quite fine detail using system settings and in the mod matrix, making it very expressive. It will work as a vst controller and the Hydra does transmit NRPN MIDI which is finer resolution than standard. The main limitation will probably be what your vst instruments will receive! The main reason for buying the Deluxe though is as a standalone synth - that's where it shines the most, but I know people who use it as a controller too. Hope that helps

but the keys feel cheap plastic?I have a ni s61 mkii, native instruments, do you think that the hydrasynth has worse keys and will I notice the difference?

I'd love to see what you could do with the new GX-80 from Cherry Audio. A keyboard like the Hydrasynth this seems ideal for controlling it.
@synthuniverse2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes it's being mentioned a lot as an ideal partner to GX-80. I confess that so far I've resisted as I'm more drawn to hardware synths. The GX-80 sounds I've heard are swamped in reverb and FX, which I guess appeals to the 'film soundtrack' vibe but can obscure the raw sound of the software. Although credit to Cherry Audio for really excelling on the GUI and the feature list!
@JovianPath2 жыл бұрын
@@synthuniverse Yeah, completely agree on the overuse of reverb in the effects of the GX-80 presets. However, Cherry Audio does a great job on the underlying synth engine as well (just turn off or turn down the reverb). It's worth it at their price point, IMO. Anyway, I just bought the Hydrasynth Deluxe and will certainly buy your sound pack when it releases. Really great stuff.

Your video has made me come off the fence re the HydraSynth. So many videos I have seem are hard/brittle/underwhelming, but just the opening patch nailed it for me. Thanks. Are these presets in the synth or sounds you have made? If the latter, will they be for sale?

When using both engines, is it necessary to use both "outs"? It appears you have, and I was curious. Great sounds, by the way!
@synthuniverse11 ай бұрын
Thanks for your feedback and question! You don't need to use both outs - it defaults to both engines being output from the main 2 outputs. But it's nice to be able to separate them to process the layers differently if needed.

How does the keyboard action compare to something like a Yamaha Motif? Is it wobbly or does it feel solid and sturdy?
@synthuniverse Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. I don't have a Motif so can't comment on that. But with poly aftertouch the Hydra keyboard is going to have a different feel - some folks forget that. The keys have to fulfil the task of polyphonic pressure sensitivity as well as everything else. I think they got the balance right - the keys are responsive for fast playing, yet also very responsive for AT. They feel light and not as 'weighted' as some premium key beds, but I have played mine intensively and never had any problems.

Grazie.

@@synthuniverse I try like this… Thanks for the great video. I would like to buy it but I would like to ask two questions. 1) Can Hydrasynth work as a usb audio interface with my Mac Mini? Will the Logic Pro X software also recognize the audio outputs of the synth or just the MIDI protocol? Will I have to take the Hydrasynth audio signal exclusively from the analog jack outs? 2) Can Hydrasynth be used as a usb midi keyboard to control VST instruments installed on my Mac Mini? Thank you.
@synthuniverse Жыл бұрын
@@MrPapacc Okay I will answer 1) No you will need a separate audio interface to route the audio outputs of Hydrasynth into Logic. There are many good quality affordable audio interfaces on the market that will do the job fine (just remember if you buy a Deluxe you will need one with at least 4 inputs because the synth has 4 audio outputs if you want to use both layers at once like I do in the video). The Hydra USB output is just MIDI and data. 2) Yes, you can use settings in your Mac so the Hydra can control any VST instruments. The Hydra itself also has comprehensive MIDI settings and is a very expressive controller. Hope that helps - good luck with it!

@@synthuniverse Perfect, thanks for the reply! I actually already own a Universal Audio Apollo Twin. I'll probably need to expand the inputs with an external rack adat preamp…

In the first patch "Deep sweep", how exactly did you "emphasise" notes with poly aftertouch? I mean how did the pitch bending "know" which notes to bend? And the pedal you were using - you kept it pressed at the middle point (so that initially it sent a value of 64) and then you either pressed forward or backward? I know it's tedious for you to explain, but I would appreciate it! Greetings!
@synthuniverse Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question! I'll try and explain: by pressing harder on certain notes, the poly aftertouch makes it possible to bring in the sound of an oscillator that is otherwise not sounding (basically controlling volume of that oscillator). The expression pedal (a Moog EP3) was used to bend the pitch of that oscillator by a perfect 5th. So when I wanted to bend notes down, I pressed the pedal to the toe position, while pressing the notes I wanted to bend harder so the bend could be heard. Then the opposite pedal direction to the heel to bend up. I could also 'reset' the pitch using the pedal by moving it while I wasn't pressing any notes hard, so the bend wasn't heard. I hope that makes sense!
