This is correct if we keep the same working pressure. In the case of needing to do the same job, you only have to increase the pressure on the rod side.
@felixar90
@felixar90 Жыл бұрын
It’s easier to just design the system to have enough pressure to pull with sufficient force, rather than have 2 different pressures. The push stroke will have some extra force but it usually doesn’t matter. What is often a more annoying problem is that the cylinder extends slower than it can retract, because the piston side has a greater volume to fill than the rod side. This can be solved to a extent by recycling the oil coming out of the rod side into the piston side instead of going to the tank. This is called regeneration. This doesn’t work when extending under a substantial load tho.

Extend/Retract > Push/Pull. Most confusion stems from nomenclature and language barriers (technically hydraulic systems dont pull. The pump is already creating pressure, which makes it easier to switch sides of the cylinder instead of having a positive pressure pump and vacuum pump for each side)

It depends on if you are talking about the hydraulic system or the mechanical system it's operating. For instance, when the hydraulic system is extending the rod, it is Pressing on a hydraulic press, and Lowering on a crane outrigger and Lifting on a forklift and Pushing on a trash compactor. And in this animation, it's pushing the rod out and pulling it back in, even if the pressure is still Pushing on the rod end of the cylinder. It's all about perspective

I had to work that through in my head but I can see how it works now. I thought the two would just fight each other and slow it down even more, but really both sides are just expanding and spitting the piston out by replacing the metal volume with fluid as if it's just a steel rod with its end sticking out of an airtight hole in a container of expanding fluid. The force is pressure x the cross sectional area of the ram, so not quite as much as either the push or pull (unless the ram is really thick). Well it will be the push minus the pull actually.

Wouldn't the piston also reduce the volume in the upper half, thus the air would have to fill a smaller space and would be denser. Wouldn't this denser air then apply a greater force and equalize this disparity?
@deku976
@deku976 7 ай бұрын
Nope, because the volume decreases at the same rate on both sides, as in when you move the piston halfway, the pressure doubles, and that works for both sides. It would only apply if the amount of air is the same on both sides and that's not true due to 2 reasons. 1) the piston rod doesn't displace the air on the other side, it replaces it so the pressure equalises. 2) it's hydraulic, so there is no air

Yes this is called the anular area(the side of the piston with the rod) and the full Area(the side of the piston without the rod) Aa=Af-πxR²(Rod) Or it can also be calculated as Af- πxD²(Rod)/4 this is also true for pneumatic systems as well.

You can use this mechanical advantage to create more pressure than the pump pressure is putting out. It does take a little time we maxed out a pressure gauge in hydraulic class. With check valves and sequencing blocks you can build incredibly high pressures. You can retract faster also by using that pressure differential too. Unload cylinders can use the extra flow in amazing ways.

There’s usually a compensation pressure to the smaller load to account for the difference in area/output pressure

Simple solution, have a valve that changes the retracting side to the suction side of the pump, while the other side is pushing - meaning no matter what you are applying the same cumulative force to either side of the cylinder

You can also send pressure to both sides to rapidly extend the cylinder. It's because the shaft would effectively reduce the volume of the cylinder so you need less fluid. But it also means you have much less force

At work I run a Takeuchi skid loader a decent amount. I had noticed that the attachment locking mechanism locked much faster than it unlocks. The piston lengthens to lock and shortens to unlock. This explains everything.
