Awesome job by both. The fly crew and controllers.

Kudos to the PHL controller for just double checking that they were "on the same page" with 27L - so many recent examples of controllers either not responding or scolding pilots for not reading it back correctly. That's the way it should be done.

I was on this flight . This pilot was so calm . Very good pilot to say the least! I did hear the hydraulic system over and over as we were climbing which I thought was a bit odd. But the pilot told us no big deal and went back to the airport very smoothly. I wasn’t that concerned as the pilot made it seem like just another day in the office.

How often did the pilot check in with the passengers? My fear is that during a big emergency you won't know what's happening
@gonzofamily2744Күн бұрын
@ just once, also told us we should be back in 10 min . Took About 15 or so.

OVER COMMUNICATION is worse than NO communication. THAT was perfect communication. Clear and Concise. Unrushed. Both very Respectful. and the double checking of the rwy 27L was SAGE level ATC. after lots of RIGHT turns, that could have been a Gotcha moment during a high pressure situation. well done ALL! Seriously, i watched a lot of ATC emergency vids... and none were even close to this fine and exceptional example. Calling in the pans, escalating to mayday, delivering exact info... "in pounds" as per request. Vectors when needed and not ten messages saying "you need vectors yet?" style. This is a dream example of how ATCPILOTS help each other. I know it was scary, but everyone did their part to their best ability.

Well… kinda. All involved did a pretty good job handling a slightly stressful situation, but the loss of a single hydraulic system is really no big deal on a transport category aircraft, nor is the loss of nosewheel steering unless there’s an unavoidable large crosswind. Many pilots would just use differential thrust and braking to at least taxi clear of the runway, if not all the way to the gate, which I’ve done a couple of times when nosewheel steering failed. And the approach controller’s comment on 27L was because he issued the clearance to intercept incorrectly. The instruction should have been to intercept the localizer, and when he realized he’d goofed he corrected it. No big deal, but not necessarily a “sage” example of situational awareness either. And the flight crew used terminology that SO many pilots use these days: instead of reading back “one two thousand” and “one zero thousand” (the proper terminology), they read back “one two twelve thousand” and “one zero ten thousand”. Doubling up like that is appropriate when communications are garbled or otherwise unclear, but not when comms are good, as was the case this time.

How do you find past ATC audio like this?
@Palmit_2 күн бұрын
@AviatorSupreme - S/He's an "enthusiast"... who sits on newsboards all day long, etc. It's not about finding... it's about being a paid subscriber to various ADB and other sites.'Spotters' collect audio all day long and upload juicy audio. As soon as there's an 'interesting' situation talked about, S/He dives off to the archives. You'll notice that there are NEVER british ATC ... because it's illegal to record communications. NOT listen, but to record. So it's not "found", it's FED to them. S/He throws on some captions and disclaimers and thats that.

Silly question from a newbie. They declared a Pan Pan, and subsequently declared an emergency. I thought they were the same thing. Obviously not. How are they different?
@YouCanSeeATC2 күн бұрын
"Mayday" is used in the most urgent life-threatening situations, while "pan-pan" is for urgent situations that are serious but not life-threatening.
@Palmit_2 күн бұрын
PAN PAN PAN is or non life threatening or non critical situation that are URGENT. MAYDAY is for when sh_tes bad and everyone is gonna expire.

@pgbrandon - PAN PAN PAN is for non life threatening or non critical situations that are still URGENT. MAYDAY is for when it's bad. REAL bad. So bad that a crash is just about certain.

pan = urgency, mayday = crisis. the FAA doesn't really specify which is meant by "declare emergency", but people generally interpret it as close to "mayday".
