Thanks for the video. You answered all of the questions I have before I dip my 870 stock. Tubes is loaded with basic "here's my dip", but your video has excellent info. FYI, baking soda and vinegar are great form cleaning tubs. Sprinkle heavy coat of soda and then spray with vinegar until you get a wet paste, work it in a little with your hand. Let soak for a while, re-soak and scrub.

Thanks for being humble and admitting it's not as easy as it looks. I found the little fish nets from the pet store pull out the floating pieces of crap. I'm trying your idea of the different primer and paint. The supplied primer and paint was never adhering to my job. FINGERS CROSSED. Thanks again.

Honestly this is the first hydrodipping video I've seen that shows a close up. Most dip an item and show it from 4ft away for 3 seconds then the video cuts off lol. I've never had a dip go completely flawless and I'm glad someone finally showed the real process. Btw you can use acrylic paint tubes, like an artist/painter would use, to fix those spots were the film didn't stick. About to dip a shotgun barrel exactly like this with the rib. Wish me luck
@SouthMainAuto9 жыл бұрын
Good luck sir! They don't show a close up because they mess up lol
@cantdance4shit9 жыл бұрын
Very true. One thing that they don't tell you and it sucks to find out for yourself is that the activator is not universal. If you buy film then you have to buy that same companies activator or it won't work. You cant mix different brands of activator and film. Also mydipkit is the best and the easiest to use.
@SouthMainAuto9 жыл бұрын
Oh that's great. Thanks for sharing that. Saw a vid on the YT on how to make your own activator and was gonna try it. If I do I'll let you know if it works on the my dip kit stuff. It was some Australian guy that made his own then demonstrated it. Then again I think the activator is pretty cheap in the grand scheme of things.

Holy shit!! An hour long.....if you have a short attention span, don't even waste your time unless your willing to watch it in parts.. I'm also trying to educate myself in the arts of Hydrodipping and I will say that you do have some very good tips and clarification of them. I was able to find some useful understanding on the pre painting rituals. From what I understood, the project needs to be sanded in order for the primer to adhere itself to the project's surface and the primer in turn will leave a virgin surface for the color base paint coat to adhere to. Now for the color base paint, it's important that the paint just dries to the touch but does not fully cure. In average this can be achieved within 2 hours depending on conditions. They also said, not allow the color base to fully cure, this assures that the hydrographic have a good bond to the base paint. At this point fully curing the project is then needed for the clear coats for which they recommend not to be cheap on. On this particular tutorial the used a 2 part clear coat and the also said you can do multiple light coats as well as long as you're following the clear coat's instructions.

At 27:34, you pointed out that the only reason you give it that little wiggle is because everybody else does, but I was told it was to dissipate the remaining film, so it didn't "recoat" what you already did! Seee how the sides of the tape want to pull toward the inside when you dipped the Stock. That means NOt ENOUGH activator. It is fine for what you done but, on larger jobs like motorcycle parts it takes more activator than what you would think. I use a 1.7mm tip HVLP gun to spray Activator with.

I always used the crappy camo tape, and was always left with adhesive stickys because it just does not all come off. EVEN with brake cleaner and all that did was soften the finish on the wood and smear everything to hell. Lesson learned there. This stuff i have seen before, but not seen it done - thanks for that Eric O. Will i try it ? Not this year....maybe next on my 870. Looks almost like paint, and i'm thinkin how about a coat of satin finish spray poly to protect the the camo ?? Anyway thanks Eric O

P.S. Is that a weather proof finish? When hunting in the rain here we used to get a beater shotgun and just spray paint it! Rust was a main concern with blued guns so if we took a treasured weapon we used to use gun grease on the outside and sometimes even STP which seemed to stay on in a pouring rain. The fun waterfowling was working the dogs and calling them in close so they never got a chance to flare from the bluing. Nowadays if I could get it I would go for a matte stainless in my A-5 or side by sides. Good times. I started my oldest boy on an 1100 almost thirty years ago now. Hard to beat a mess of duck or goose gizzards fried up properly. Take care. Doug

Hello Eric, I have had good luck with cold bluing in the past (Birchwood Casey) although not hot bluing it did last quite a long time but i put several coats on. The more coats the deeper the color and the longer it lasts. Have you tried walnut or even milder baking soda medium when just blasting paint off? It is much gentler but removes all paint nicely. Nice project and 1100's are a tried and true shotgun. Is Sheba your bird dog/retriever? lol!

Great video Eric. My only problem is I live in the U.K. nanny state. Where a lot of good stuff, Pistols Rifles some knives are illegal. Which when you give it a bit of thought is a bit daft because people who are going to use carry such things illegally are criminals anyway so wont care about the law. All the law has done is hurt the people who want to be involved with any kind of gun /rifle . At times the UK is TRULY a depressing place to be Regards Darren

Ross Charlie I truly lament what has happened to individual freedoms in good old Britain. As you well know, the government should fear the people; the people should never have to live in fear of the government. When the "occupy" movement reached London a few years ago I noticed that most neighborhoods were helpless before the onslaught of the crazies. But not the Sikhs! Their insistence that carrying swords was a legally protected religious right made them able to repel the invaders with great aplomb. Too bad that Yanks and Europeans. no longer seem to believe in something as much as the invading Moslem culture believes in its frightening doctrines. The crusades 900 years ago were pretty terrible, but at least we stood up to Mohammedans back then. Today everyone seems to be afraid to believe in anything and to say so. I hope you good folks will never give up on getting your rights back. - Jim Haeberle, St. Anthony, Idaho.
