Who gives a fuck about addiction when you have less than a year to live!?! And the funny thing is how doctors used to prescribe 90 Percocet 10’s a month for a damn headache!?!

I literally think about this stuff whenever I’m in pain. When I was battling cancer they gave me lots of pain killers. Most made me sick to my stomach and I didn’t like them much. But when I was in the hospital for my cdiff infection they gave me this stuff and wow. It instantly, I mean instantly, took away my pain. From being curled in a ball crying in pain to nothing. It felt like Jesus himself gave me a hug. Never felt better in my entire life. Until it wore off lol, and when they took me off of it, I had to go back to the Percocet. Now I’m 4 months post chemo and not on any medication. I’m feeling good and don’t miss being in so much pain, but I did enjoy being able to sleep. I could just settle into that feeling, it makes you feel like you’re on a little boat drifting down a gentle river. So wonderful. I can see how some people can become addicted.

I’m an addict in recovery and this was my love. I would take about 24-40 mg at a time and then more throughout the day. But I have chronic pain and tons of health issues which is why I started to begin with. But I got a lot of mental trauma too. 8mg Dilaudid and 2mg Xanax and 60mg Oxy is the best combo. I have enjoyed this for years and have overdosed and gotten close to ODing over and over. I’m in recovery but it’s still hard.

I have a L5-S1 bulging disc causing sciatica in my left leg and have been in the hands down worst pain of my life. Haven’t been able to perform basic daily functions such as dressing or myself below the waist and have been having many sleepless nights due to the inability to find a position in bed that doesn’t pinch my nerve. Dilaudid is the only thing that has given me genuine effective pain relief that lower strength opioid medications couldn’t such as Percocet, Norco, or Tramadol. For those dealing with unbearable pain that’s dampening their lives, ask your doctor about this medicine and get their opinion. It worked for me greatly. I wasn’t given a written prescription but rather a shot in my arm at the ER. Very thankful for the pain relief. Waiting on my scheduled epidural injections for my back and this allowed have a break from the constant stabbing pain. Please be very careful and do not drive on this or consume anything that it advises against. Hope this can help someone!

I'm in the same exact predicament with my L5 S1 except it's on my right side. I would recommend looking into a microdiscectomy where they will go in and remove the bulging part of the disc that is pushing on the nerve. I'm on track to have mine done the beginning of next month and I can't wait because I have been in so much pain for the last few months and basically on bed rest 24/7.

It changed my life in a ton of ways and sucks barely being 22 and dealing with this, I’m getting separated from the military due to the weight gain not being able to work out which for some reason didn’t qualify as a medical exemption but I am scheduled to see a surgeon and discuss my options. I’ve gotten two epidural steroid injection the first one helped but wore off within 3 weeks. This last one has been much better but there’s times where I still get flare ups from walking too much and can feel the spasms in my S1 nerve at night when trying to sleep. Sucks but I know it’ll be fine just a lot of uncertainty getting out and start brand new again but I still can’t wait lol

@@xXIntoleranceXx I was in the Air Force years ago but didn't have these issues back then. I would say from my recent experience, I would strongly suggest getting an MRI as soon as possible so your doctors can assess the severity of your impingement which sounds like it's fairly high like mine as I can only move in small amounts. The good news is, a Microdiscectomy is a rather straightforward procedure and is typically considered outpatient where you can go home within the next day or two. I would also recommend watching a few procedural videos like this one I will link below. After watching the video, you can scroll down to the comments and read testimonials of those that have had the procedure done and are back on their feet as normal. Not to sound like an addict, but when I was in the hospital last week and they gave me a dose of hydromorphone..... Ugh I was in heaven 😍 I had had to doses of morphine that did nothing, NOTHING, but when they gave me this, I instantly felt it, I would love another dose lol 🤭🤭🤭

Lol man I was in the hospital for 2 months. After they cut my stomach open they gave me the option to get Dilaudid. The nurse injecteded me super fast the first time and it felt like my nerves got shocked (weird). But after that it felt sooo good. I would get it at least once a day lol. They took me off of it and gave me some lame Tylenol with Codeine which didn't do anything. I've never done any drugs but that Dilaudid did feel great

It is sad and unnecessary that someone has to say I hope I don’t sound like an addict. That is the effect of the so-called opioids/opiate crisis. The primary goals should be keeping patients out of pain, not worrying about litigation. “Let us avoid making surgical patients pay with unnecessary suffering for the opioid overprescribing sins of others.”

I’ve been on hydromorphone 8mg a day for 3 years. 2mg 4x daily. I must say it helps me a lot. All though the oral isn’t as strong compared to the hospital IV drip. It helps and cuts the pain off without any side effects. When I tried hydrocodone or oxycodone, I felt nasty side effects and headaches. Hydromorphone works well for my body and I’m able to operate any vehicle while on it.

@StayInAlive I was prescribed fentanyl for a bit and hated it. When I was in Afghanistan I worked with Coalition forces to help eradicate heroin and poppy supply. Some days after burning the massive piles of heroin bricks we’d get a second hand high. Yes it made me pain free and feel good. I would not try it again.

@@bekeneel we burnt massive piles of both opium poppy,straw,hashish,and heroin bricks. We breathed in the smoke it’s only natural to breath. Every single person in my platoon felt it. Yeah it’s a waste but orders are orders. It’s not so much a waste knowing the drug money was fueling the local terrorist cell we were watching. Yes hydromorphone and heroin are kinda similar in feeling to me, I much prefer heroins though. Everyone’s body is different. I hated fentanyl for chronic pain. I hate oxycodone for chronic pain. Hydromorphone was perfect for my pain. Everybody’s body is different.

@@JR-ly2pu Interesting :) I take the plant/opiate Kratom on a daily basis, it's mainly produced in asia, leaves of a tree. In some countries there it's banned but not here. It's nowhere near as powerful as heroin tho but i like it and take a lot, for pain too & wellbeing, my doctors don't want to prescribe anything like that unfortunately, would be cheaper too lol. Smoke alltho I can imagine it felt good is not so natural or healthy, I mean smoking harms the body but sure you know that :). I have a very powerful desktop vaporizer here with glass, water rig alltho I don't use it often as weed is not my drug of choice. Thanks for the info.

They gave me this after my last hernia operation in 2012 and I liked it because it didn't make me loopy, itchy and nauseated like Vicodin or Percocet did and just made me able move. I have another hernia operation in Friday with the same doctor and hope that I get this again.

In between neck surgeries I was always on morphine but at the hospital after surgery nothing made everything better like the Dilaudid. And I can always tell when they gave me the Dilaudid cuz he immediately I can feel it in my stomach this warm feeling across my gut. I remember admit I felt it I grab my stomach and and make a sound in the nurse would say are you okay. Immediately I'd look up at him and say oh yes I am perfectly fine zero pain I'm going to take a nap now. But I'm not sure I'd want this outside of the hospital. Even though there are days when I hate dealing with the morphine because I'm still in pain.

2 years ago, I was in the hospital for 70 days. I had Nephrolithotomy tubes (Kidney Tubes) in 3 months prior and during my 3 month stay. The tube was between my bottom 2 ribs because of my unfortunately anatomy. I was in enormous pain every single day. They think the tube rested on a nerve on my rib. I also had a PICC line straight to my heart. I had IV Dilaudid multiple times a day, every day whilst in the hospital. Dilaudid by pill for the 3 months prior. I was so worried about addiction afterwards. Luckily for me, my hypervigilance prevented addiction. At most, I was given 1mg SC/IV towards the last 2 or 3 weeks of my stay, starting out with like 0.5mg SC/IV. Incredibly powerful stuff when at the heart immediately. I remember an incredibly intense warm fuzzy feeling overtaking my body starting from my jaw, to my neck, down to my arms and stomach as the pain went away. Eventually falling asleep. Had to be constantly monitored as it drastically slowed down my breathing. I legit got a form of PTSD from that stay. I had therapy and I'm okay now.

Keeping in mind the potential for addiction before taking this kind of medication is really important, and likely helped you avoid it! Especially if you're taking opioids via SC/IV route, the risk for respiratory depression is very important and one of the main side effects we watch for before and during administration. 1mg is a very basic dose tho, even IV, did you have some other kind of breathing problems who helped cause this? I read about ppl even using 10m IV at once however, those are most likely only addicts or ppl with high tolerance for strong opioids like that (or heroin, etc, which is very similar).

I had a motorcycle accident almost 10yrs ago. Broken femur, ribs, crushed pelvis, broke hip and 2 broke arms, morphine was like a tylenol and wasnt working. They started giving me doses of Dilauded thru a pick line in my neck and man oh man, you can feel it from your head to your toes. My friends would get up and leave the hospital because they knew they only had a good 10 to 15 seconds to get their goodbyes out before I went into another dimension lol

I was given 2mg of Hydromorphone after a fistulotomy. I have dry mouth and lightheadedness as the first side effects. I'm still riding the roller coaster. It is distracting from the pain but the side effects are hitting me hard

Was prescribed 4mg hydromorphine and 50mg tramadol after I had knee replacement surgery. They were not to be taken at the same time but 4-6 hours after each other. I weigh 105 lbs and the tramadol worked just a little but the hydromorphine did not work at all. I love narcotics and was so disappointed! I was in pain most of the time and scared to take more than prescribed.

I have had many surgeries. I have endometriosis and PCOS, so I need a lot of lesion removals. My last surgery was the worst. I’ve had a good 25 surgeries in 5 years. Any time I’m in either the er or recovery, fentanyl does not work for me? It doesn’t effect me in any way at all. I only take one pain medicine daily and that is Tylenol 4 for the pain I have. So it’s not like I’m used to it, I have never done a street drug off the street like that. Well besides weed, but that’s not a drug in my opinion! Anyway, my last surgery was so bad I was screaming in pain. I never ever do that. Buy the time my fiancé got into recovery I was rolling around the bed screaming in pain. He was shocked and freaking out. Because usually when he sees me in setting up kn bed eating cracker just fine. No this time was my worst pain ever. The have me fentanyl right out of surgery in that recovery. It did not help. So the nurse sent me to the last recovery, where I get dressed and discharged. They gave me two pain pills. Which didn’t touch the pain. Then I writhed in pain for an hour and they offered me ibuprofen!!!! I said please please just put me back to sleep!! I can’t do this another second longer! So the nurse called my doctor, who was the surgeon. He ordered dilaudid. The nurse came in and said this may take up to 10 minutes to kick in, nope!! Not at all. As soon as she put it in my iv line I could fell my body relax. I was in the fetal position on my knees. Wasn’t worried about bleeding or my incisions at this point. My fiancé said he actually watch my body relax! So I have had the two before fentanyl and dilaudid. If dilaudid is less strong that fentanyl, who does it work and fentanyl not!’ sorry this became a long comment lol!!! Thank you!

I'm sorry you went through such a rough experience! You're definitely right that for some people, the "stronger" or more potent drugs just don't work as well as they do in other people. Your body might just react differently to Fentanyl! It also depends a lot on the dose that you're getting. Thank you for sharing your story 😀

Is there a particular reason that Dilaudid is so effective? Stereotypically it's the one associated with ""drug seeking"" (hate that term so very much, so derogatory) the most, but speaking as a patient I vividly remember it being very effective compared to equal analgesic opioids like morphine or fentanyl. Is there any explanation for this? Perhaps ease of BBB penetration?

Great question, and to be honest, I'm not quite sure! I wasn't able to find the answer with some quick research. I wonder if it has something to do with how different opioids interact with the different opioid receptors (mu, delta, kappa...). I would recommend speaking with a pharmacist about this, they might have a good explanation! - Ryan

@@NurseRyan I'm apart of a large community of pain patients and professionals on twitter who dispel opioid misconceptions because they lead to harms against us in accessing meds, and we have a few Harm Reductionists and drug users who self-medicate for things opioids would never be approved for, and one of my friends there said she read a study where users subjectively said they deemed that heroin and Dilaudid created very similar subjective pleasurable experiences, so that suggests to me it's just the rate and amount that gets to the brain unscathed metabolically since that's suggested to be the mechanism that makes heroin stronger than morphine despite only being morphine with some acetyl groups. I don't think Dilaudid's affinity is significantly higher than morphine or fentanyl, and affinity doesn't necessarily translate to more analgesia since buprenorphine is poorly analgesic for most of us, but has some of the highest binding affinities of any opioid.

Hi Toni, I have read about Hydromorphone's use with sickle cell disease, and how it may be a better alternative than morphine! It's interesting that your doctor said hydromorphone was 15 times stronger than morphine. Everywhere I read, it is usually listed as being between 4-7 times stronger. In my practice, we also convert by a factor of 5 when switching from hydromorphone to morphine or vice versa. Thanks for sharing 😀

@@NurseRyan Thanks for your response.i have sickle cell.4mg taken 3 or 4 times a day with prn ibuprofen 800mg and 4mg zanaflex. It does help me to have a productive day. Same here i was going through nursing school and went to college that day to take my midterm and i was in so much pain and didn't know why. I didn't wanna miss my midterm so i took it and went to the er when they did a cat scan and said i had two kidney stones at one time and they said i would pass one and the other was to big. My teacher thought i was crazy for even coming to class but i passed 100 percent lol and at first the er Doctor gave me demerol and that was horrible i thought i was gonna fall of the bed and it didn't last long at all and the dr said that it was a short acting drug and so then he gave me a shot of diluaid i believe and that took the pain right away because kidneystones are horrible and i wouldn't wish that on anyone ever.

Dilaudid caused me to faint in the hospital they had to rush to give me oxygen to revive me They had stop the surgery I went in for kidney stones! I’m allergic to Dilaudid, medication too high dose is dangerous for me I’m allergic to a lot of pain medication So be careful with getting any pain medication please make sure to let the doctors know.. 😔💊

I have been taking morphine ER 30 mg TID for several years for severe back pain .However since they are discontinuing the production of the ER version of this I was switched to the IR version of this and the effects are not as good My Dr. Suggested I might try Dilaudid I really don't know if I should switch .Does Dilaudid last longer than the morphine IR ?

I can't give any actual medical advice here, but I can say that I have seen patients switch from Morphine to Hydromorphone with good effect before. If you decide to try it out, your dose would likely be lowered to approximately 6-7.5 mg TID due to Hydromorphone's higher potency than Morphine. Hydromorphone also comes in extended release capsules, so you could ask your doctor about them too. Hope that helps!

I would always recommend speaking to your doctor or pharmacist for any actual medical advice, as these videos are meant only for educational purposes! Personally, I have never needed to dilute the 2mg/ml ampules, we typically give low doses subcutaneously straight from the vial.

In my experience, Hydromorphone is often used as a comfort/palliative measure for those who are at the end-of-life stage. We also see it for various acute and chronic pains. I have read that it is being used as a comfort measure during end-of-life care of COVID-19 as well. I always recommend speaking to your primary healthcare provider or pharmacist for the best information!

My doctor just put me on Belbuca at my request. I have chronic pancreatitis and have been in and out of the hospital for years. I've been on the ventilator for a month all due to myself and my heavy drinking. I quit now it's been over 3 years. I am just sick of taking hydromorphone and wanted to slow up my 8 pills a day. Is this going to block the dilaudid? Where would you rate this new belbuca on a pain scale compared to other pain meds?

I've read that Belbuca patches are 15-20x stronger in POTENCY than Hydromorphone tablets. That does not necessarily mean your pain relief will be better or worse, just that the dose of a Belbuca patch would be much smaller than the dose of oral Hydromorphone. Everyone reacts to pain meds differently, so you may have to try it and see how it goes. Hope that helps and thanks for sharing!

That's right, Hydromorphone is pretty strong! Oxycodone (Percocet) is about 1.5 times more potent than Morphine, while Hydromorphone is about 5 times more potent than Morphine.

I would definitely recommend speaking to your primary healthcare provider about your loss of memory, as it may be a more serious underlying condition. However, I have read that on their own, both sickle cell and opioid dependency can cause memory impairments. Hope that helps!

My dad used to pay 40 per pill back in the ‘80s for this drug. He would take me with him (I was probably 8) because if we were pulled over it was easier to pretend that he was “just lost”. Once he didn’t have the money and “accidentally” dropped it into the car. The dealer pulled a gun to my head. Thank God a cop turned the corner at that very moment. BUT…. I’m also a strong advocate for pain patients to get the medicines they need. This same dad… wound up getting legal pain meds for the rest of his life and managed to take them properly. I’ve also had cancer twice (along with several other surgeries) and have had to wean myself off more than once myself. It definitely can be done. Pain management is now more important than ever.

Bro I remember back in 2020 like around December I trade a whole once of bud for 20 dilaudid because supposedly they were just like perks which they kind of are but they don’t have any taste to it & they fuck you up way more faster. We busted down all of them dat same night I didn’t sleep for like 3 days str8 throwing up like a mf-er on the third day. If ur not doing perks or zans or klonpins don’t do them period.
