Love the 3d prints but my favourite feeder will always be the "grandpa" style chicken feeders because they are rodent-proof! And also because it's hilarious to watch chickens deliberately stomp on the pedal to lift the lid.

the walls on the hooch hive are way to thin. Bees need some insulation buffer. Might be functional as a mild climate nuc hive for splits. as it looks to be about the same volume as 3 standard deep langstroth frames. I get you're tying to keep within print bed limitations. Personally not a fan of any plastic contact with my bees...that's why I don't rate the Flowhive. I would recommend trying to use standard frame dimensions as it will allow interchangeability of frames between different hives. My personal preference is to make a euro spec long hive out of a sheet of ply and use the 4ft width as the hive length using standard deep frames. Or think of it as a top bar hive using deep frames...

i was going to say the same thing. bees can regulate their temperature, fanning if it is too hot, and dancing if it gets too cold, but you need to buffer them from the outside temp. there needs to be insulations. i find the thin pine boxes to be bad even. Wyoming gets cold fast. insulation is a must

You know what would make a good 3D print project? An inline float valve sized for aquarium air line tubes. I'm thinking something a little bigger than a 1 way check valve. I would use it to maintain water level in a 5 gal bucket.

I've been wanting to try out the Flow hive, but I have an Apimay hive and it's made of thick insulated plastic and doesn't open. Good hive tho... interesting mini hive. I think I'd have to stack several of those smaller sections on to make it big enough for all the bees from one of my hives. I have another hive, a home made top bar hive that i made from half a water barrel. I didn't know the bees would cross comb on the top bars when I put them in or I'd have separated the top bars by a quarter inch or so. Makes it hard to get the honey comb out when I want to harvest. Another thing I discovered about using half a water barrel is that in the winter moisture builds up in the hive so you have to put drainage holes to let the water out in the bottom AND the bees will try to plug them up. Transferring the bees to another hive is my plan, but I don't have one yet.

I had to also have a conventional super on my hive as well as the flow super. Without it the bees would fill up the brood box and want to swarm. Have you waxed the flow frames yet. It took me two seasons (springs) for them to get it fully waxed and to start filling. 🍺🍺
@downunderfulla6001
@downunderfulla6001 3 ай бұрын
First I had the flow under the conventional. Then swapped them around. My hive was really strong. Unfortunately they (2 hives) mysteriously died instantly overnight. Now the neighbours have a new entertainment area and pool. No coincidence at all 🤬

hey hooch, could you make a hive that uses both wood and petg/plastic? for walls and such, wood tends to be cheaper for me. i'll definitely try out the chicken feeder though, i might try making something similar for my rabbits, though they tend to chew on plastic when bored
