I have a JD 3043D. It's gear drive with a shuttle shift, though the clutch does need to be depressed to use the shuttle. It's 8 speed forward and reverse. I've run gear drive tractors all of my life so I guess that I might be less inconvenienced by a clutch than someone that hasn't run old tractors. Most of the time, the shuttle shift happens, almost without thought, while I'm operating the loader or turning the steering wheel. I doubt it costs more than a couple of seconds of time compared to operating a hydra-stat. The reasons I bought this tractor instead of a comparable hydra-stat were as follows: Weight. Around six hundred pounds heavier than a hydra-stat. Cost. Around 5-6 thousand dollars less at the time than a hydra-stat. Simplicity. Gear drives are basic and old technology. There's a reason so many old N model Fords are still out there working everyday. Power. I wanted the most bang for my 43 horse buck, especially at the PTO. I run a chipper quite a bit and it really needs the power. Put it in gear and forget it. I maintain about a mile of road with my tractor. As you mentioned, I can set the throttle, pick the gear and just mostly go along for the ride. Lastly, at least for me. I'm just comfortable on gear drive tractors. I have an old JD 345 garden tractor with hydra-stat and a Bad Boy zero turn. For doing lawn work it's really nice to have. But I don't see much advantage, for me, anyway, in having hydra-stat on my compact tractor. Loader work might be marginally easier with it but then, if loader work is the primary use I have for a tractor I'd get a skid steer. The choice of just about everything in the tractor world is highly subjective. I'm not sure there is a perfect or one size fits all answer to anything. I guess the deciding factor in this choice probably comes down to experience. If you're a new tractor owner/operator then I'd say get a hydra-stat. Less of a learning curve. Tractors are always looking for a way to kill the operator so the less he has to think about the better. Thanks for all you do. I look forward to your videos and enjoy your content. Have a great one!

That is the longest KZbin comment I have ever read. But it was good. Like Brock said very detailed. That is so much horsepower for that frame size that I don’t think people realize. We have a Mahindra 3540 at work that weighs around 5000 pounds I think. It has one more PTO horsepower than by 3038E which weighs less than a half as much. Your tractor smokes it on horsepower…

I bought a JD 3025D and sometimes wish I had a hydro, but can’t stand the wine they make. My high range 2nd gear seem like a great all around gear for most loader work. And it’s been great for the brush hog and tilling that I have been doing. I wish front loader capacity was just a little better but a simple upgrade from hydros plus will help with that. Thanks Brock for always giving us great content from your channel.

Gear drive transmissions operate in the 95 to 98% efficiency range, (engine power transmitted to the wheels) The best hydrostatic drive will be in the 78 to 83% range (less power to the wheels).

I think this was a good explanation for the average person that doesn't have any Ag experience. I haven't commented in a while because I haven't been watching many videos lately. Tom KF0QKK said it pretty well. All my life I have driven gear drive or shuttle shift tractors. Gear drive is awesome for long runs as you said. Shuttle shifts are awesome for repetitive work. Hydros are great for lawn/garden/small scale utility (light-medium light) work. As for electric over hydraulic it's the same story as vehicles these days; everything keeps getting more and more "convenient" but that comes at the cost of being more complex. You really have to ask yourself if you really "need" all the convenience that is available? Ask a person that has had a "convenience" system fail at a very inconvenient time and there is no way to "rig" the equipment to get the job done or get the equipment to a more suitable place for repairs. I'm guessing that person would say they could have done without some of that convenience (and cost to repair it). Just my opinion.

Well done breaking it all down very clearly and practically Brock👏👏 I want to say I’d be leaning towards shuttle shift based on this rationale and application. I’d add that if you are frequently in “tight spaces” as well as a reason why hydraulic drive would be easier to control. While I’d much prefer to have all the power to the drives, gosh golly it’s nice working in thight spaces to navigate the hydro machines👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 and I have run both, albeit mostly shuttle shift on larger machines where all that shifting is tedious and leaves me wondering if I’m wearing out components not really meant to shifted that rigorously. 😇😎🤔

My JD 4720 HST had the Automotive Cruise Control option (an add on to the standard HST electronic cruise control at the time). When mowing a big field, you established your desired ground speed with the hydro peddle, then turned the cruise on. If you needed to disengage the cruise for whatever reason, all you had to do was hit the Automotive Cruise Control's resume function and away you went at your previously established cruise speed.

I was looking at the TYM 2515 with shuttle shift. The sales manager actually recommended the shuttle shift over hydro stat as 1 it transfers more torque to the wheels as sometimes With the hydros you are at at the mercy of the hydro pressure and it can feel spongy or weak in power doing simple tasks. 2. Gear drives are about $800 Cheaper. 3. the gear drive is easier to maintain during fluid and maintenance changes. 3. if you burn out your hydro trans you’re looking at about $8-k to replace. With the gear drive a trans rebuild is about $4-k. I have a hydro lawn tractor and I totally feel the strain while At the mercy of hydro going up hills. I’m all about less Majntenance costs and having power and torque when I need it.

Hydrostatic transmissions are very user friendly and are instrumental in making repetitive back and forth tasks easier on the operator. With that said, you will never match the pulling power of a gear drive, especially when dealing with ground engaging implements and providing pushing power when going uphill. There is a much steeper learning curve with a gear drive transmission. They both have their pros and cons, it really depends on budget and what type of work you’re planning on doing with it.

There is a difference in mechanical vs hydraulic shuttle on the whole stopping/clutching part, but I think you got a lot of the info right. I'm rolling in a 74 hp mechanical shuttle. If I'm doing hours of loader work, my left knee does get sore. But that's maybe a few days in a year... But I've been on some decent sized hydros, and I don't like the feel in hard pulls. I think they are best suited under that 30 or 40 hp mark, anything above, I'd prefer gear. Not right or wrong, just preference. That being said, I want a hydro subcompact some day for yard work!

Yeah, I mentioned that there was several different types of geardrives even within the shuttle shift category but I’m not an expert on them and there is no way to cover them all in one video Some are fully synchronized, and don’t require you to stop even to switch ranges The TYM I was on, doesn’t require you to push the clutch pedal. You can engage your clutch for shifting ranges with the push button.

I grew up on four gears and one of them was reverse! 😂 Thankfully the engineers put reverse and 1st straight up and down for loader work. I wonder what the HP limitations are for hydro and if technology will expand the ceiling in the future.

Most big earth moving equipment have hydrostatic transmissions. So I don’t think there is a horse power limit for hydrostatic tractors. It’s more likely the tasks of bigger tractors such as ploughing results in them not having hydrostatic transmissions.

I ended up buying a shuttle shift New Holland Workmaster 60. Shuttle shift gave me a lot more power for my dollar. Then ended up doing a lot more loader work than I expected, and kinda wish I'd gone with the hydrostat! One other big advantage to they hydrostat is that your PTO speed can be totally independent of your ground speed. I'm spending a lot of time snowblowing right now with a PTO driven blower, and can only adjust speed by changing gears - since the throttle is set to maintain PTO speed. On a winding, snowy mountain road I wish I could fine-tune the speed like I could with a hydrostat.

I switched from a 5065E Power Reverser (12 X 12 shuttle shift) to a 2038R (hydrostatic). To me a hydrostatic gives a lot more control for doing detail work or working in tight spaces as a gear drive ground speed can only go so slow. This is important when you’re in tight spots or with hooking up implements and can get you in trouble if you’re not careful. With a shuttle shift you can feather the clutch or shift to neutral, but on uneven ground you have to remember that your tractor will roll, so you also need the brake. It’s easy to have things happen more quickly than your comfort zone and that’s when bad things can happen. I much prefer the hydrostatic in these situations as it reduces the stress level! Working in an open area and doing high load ground engaging work is where the shuttle shift shines. On a side note, I’m a little disappointed that my 2038R doesn’t display ground speed on the dash like my 5065E did. For spraying, that’s an important data point for proper calibration and coverage and since it does have cruise control, I assumed it would show ground speed. That’s what the TractorPlus app with Smart Connector or other apps that displays ground speed is for I guess. Great video as always and proof of why there are so many options available as everyone will have different needs for the variety of work they are trying to accomplish.

@@stump-bossBIll I started with a 5065E for lifting capacity and cost. The issue I had was needing to maintain 2 properties that are 60 miles away from each other. I have 5 acres near town and work and my wife inherited her 40 acre family farm an hour away. We were planning on moving out to the farm once the kids graduate from high school in five years and that helped push me into the 5065E. We were just going maintain the yard around the farmhouse and let the rest go wild until we moved out there. The situation changed last year when my dad said that Michigan winters were getting to him and he wanted to move down here to Oklahoma. Currently he is 6 miles south of Lake Superior where winters are long, cold, with lots is snow. My 5065E only had a loader with bucket and forks and a box blade. So I was going to need more implements to start maintaining all of the farm and be able to transport it all back and forth. That would require a much larger tow vehicle, trailer and properly sized implements that get expensive in a hurry. So after researching, I decided that a 2038R would be more cost effective to maintain both properties. I agree that a 3038 would have been nice, but I also wanted a backhoe more than a slightly larger frame size (the cost for the hoe is about the same cost as the frame size cost between the 2038 and 3038). My 2038R package gives me the options and implements to get everything done. -220R MSL loader with 3rd function, 4 in 1 bucket, forks, grapple, and single point hydraulic connection. -72D mid mount mower with load n go ramps -270B backhoe with hydraulic thumb -MX5 -RT3062 tiller -R3 radial tires, rear wheel spacers, rears are filled and have 2 sets of wheels weights -EA 72” wicked box blade -iMatch and extra led lighting A larger tractor would be nice at times, but this setup is big enough to get everything done and is transportable with what I have now. In 5 years when we live out at the farm and only have one property to maintain, I can make adjustments if necessary.

@ibwaldo
@ibwaldo Жыл бұрын
@@swashington942 you are correct, a 2038R on the 40 acre farm. We allow a neighbor to run his cattle on it, so they keep it mowed down for the most part. I do maintain about 3 acres around the house, out to the reservoir, and along the driveway to keep it looking decent. Driveway maintenance is necessary as well. Don’t get me wrong, the 5065E was a great fit for the farm, but I needed something for my 5 acre home near town where we live. I couldn’t afford two tractor payments or transport the 5065E back and forth between the two properties. So I made the switch to the 2038R. Once the kids graduate high school in 5 years, we’ll move out to the farm and sell our 5 acre house near town. I’ll likely keep my 2038R and get another 5 series for the larger tasks at the farm.

A hydrostatic transmission consists generally of a variable pump or two, one or two fixed displacement motors and usually another fixed displacement pump for auxiliary functions, power steering lifts, buckets etc. I have seen where some people have put on bigger pumps without increasing the suction line size, this will lead to premature pump failure as well. If you have any hydraulic questions, I will try to help! Been working with tractors since my 8N.

I believe hydrostatic machines overheat when doing heavy work, especially at low ground speeds. You can do things with a 25hp 1940s farm tractor that you can't do with many 40hp hydrostatic machine. The reason being, many of the old farm tractors had a really low gear for plowing and pulling heavy loads. Doing this kind of work will run a hydrostatic machine really hot. Heat is what damages hydrostatic transmissions.

Yes there are many different versions of gear transmissions. . Usually related to how many reverse gears they have, the ability to shift though them, and change direction, with or without the clutch being used. The power reverser version. Ability to go back and forth like a hydro. But the efficiency of a gear drive. . Shuttle shift, and power reverser are definitely commonly mixed up. . I would say yes, although I can’t get into the technical side of how the PTO operates on a hydrostatic tractor but I have ran the TYM 574. The way the PTO works on that tractor is the same as how it works on every other hydrostat tractor I’ve been around. The electric part just means the switch that engages it. Basically the point I’m making is that that description is nothing to be concerned about. That’s the way they make them.

@RockhillfarmYT
@RockhillfarmYT Жыл бұрын
Yes, the general consensus is that on average you get a little bit less of your tractor horsepower to the PTO horsepower but I don’t think it’s dramatic. My current tractor is 38 hp and puts 30 to the PTO according to the spec sheet If it were a gear drive, you might get 32 to the PTO instead of 30. That is the listed information that the manufacture will tell you. Some people will say that it’s going to feel like you get more of that power but that’s not something I can comment on I do run attachments that require 30 PTO horsepower like my stump grinder and wood chipper and it handles them. The majority of all compact tractor owners are running Hydro stats. Even in the size you are looking at it’s probably more common to get the hydrostat. Keep in mind I’m no expert. Just some guy giving an opinion.

All I know if I try to mow too thick grass with my brush hog my JD 1023 it will stall the motor. I believe it has a direct connection to the motor. I think the lower PTO hp is because the hydrostatic transmission soaks up power even if the tractor is motionless. A small tractor with a hydro transmission is much easier to drive in tight areas then a skid steer, you have much better vision forward and to the sides and skid-steers have almost zero vision backwards. Wheeled skid steers also have low ground clearance and get stuck easily. I have tens of thousands of hours driving gear drive tractors and thousands more driving backhoes, dozers and skid-steer loaders. I have had all the clutch pushing, lever pulling, and gear shifting I really want.

No it is not a hydraulic pto. The dash mounted electric switch activates a hydraulic valve and moves hydraulic fluid to a clutch pack. The fluid acts on a piston that squeezes the clutch plates together so rotary motion between the mechanical input and the pto shaft is continued. Release the pressure off of the hydraulic piston and the clutch releases discontinuing the transfer of power.

I had an L3400 for awhile and the treadle aggravated my sciatic nerve on the right leg. It was absolutely painful to operate. The tractor itself functioned great otherwise

Hydrostat is so convenient that I don't see me ever wanting to go away from that. If I ever needed a bigger tractor, then I probably wouldn't have much choice. I'd get by either way. One option I would never consider is having no tractor at all. Getting lazy in my old age!

I'm pretty sure the reason the hydrostats only go so "big" is literally size as really the only way for a hydrostat to gain strength is to increase the radius from the center of the pistons to the center of the swash plate and fit a thicker plate, bigger pistons, rods, and pins. This grows in size for a given strength faster than gears do. Hydrostats can do everything better than traditional gears can do, except packaging.

Everything you said sounds logical, but on a compact tractor they just don’t quite have the power they need

Yeah, I know that they exist, and they use them in other equipment but you won’t see very many big ag tractors that are hydrostat. I realize I kind of implied that they might not be able to make them which obviously is not true so thank you for pointing it out

There’s more than ample evidence to strongly criticize both “Mean and Green” or Kubota strong, in the end it’s how well you know limits of machine , take care of it and have access to a top notch dealer for support 👍🏻😎

And how many hours have you used it? Ha ! Yeah and how many folks having problems with the 5075e shuttle shifter aka powerreverser ....among other problems....? A hell of a lot. It may last long enough for a few guys to plant their food plots to hunt once a year for a few hours. But, to depend upon it to make a living? Hell naw. Why doesn't JD have to recall all the issues they have? Back when made in the U.S. and computer and sensor free, not many issues back then and any mechanic including the farmer could repair them. Now mechanics depend on these diagnostic codes which are only as good as what's downloaded from JD. This is what happens when politicians accept $$$, from big corporate from pharma to food to our equipment. We have to live, or not live, with it. Corporate America 3rd party mfrd and 3rd party assembled should be held accountable for recalls ! F'ing unacceptable!!

Thank you, for the information. I still don't know what to get. I will have the backhoe attachment, brush hog and tiller. I have 10 acres 1 acre wide. Hydrostat sounds good for my torain. But i don't want to lose power for the backhoe... 🤯🫤
@rgd2598
@rgd2598 Жыл бұрын
It won't affect power to the backhoe much... if any . Hydro is really nice for tiller as you can stop faster or slow down slower than a gear drive unless you ride the clutch... say if you get into some roots or tough ground. You can travel at ,for instance, 1/4mph ... barely moving... if needed and not have to ride a clutch . And there are many instances where that can come in handy .

You won't. I have 12 acres and run a JD 3720 with the hydrostat. Perfect machine for maintenance and property development. Wouldn't hesitate to run 3 bottom plow with it.

Hydrostatic transmission will definitely not affect a backhoe. A backhoe is run off of a tractors hydraulic pump which is independent of the Hydrostatic transmission.
