In my own personal searches, I found a 15º 800 goose fill sleeping bag for under $150. I purchased it, used it on a Europe trip, and now give me thoughts and feedback on it.

A note regarding the temperature rating. This company seems to do things a little different. He's absolutely correct in saying that most companies slap on a number that is their lowest rating that would allow you to survive in the bag, but you won't be doing so in comfort. I believe he calls that the "lower limit" in the vid, whereas I usually see it called the "survival rating/number" when I shop around. Then you add about a dozen degrees and that's supposed to roughly be the comfort rating/number. But THIS company has three ratings: Survival/Lower/Comfort. The Survival rating is 15, with a Lower rating of 30. You don't hit the actual Comfort rating until 50 degrees. Something to consider if you're not a particularly warm sleeper. This may be more of a 40-degree bag as far as comfortable sleep for an average person goes. BTW, according to the company's website, the fill weight is 610g on a Regular for this bag, and a total pack weight of roughly 2.6#/42 oz./1200g. On Amazon it's going for roughly $165 right now. A possible comp: For those of you who remember the AegisMax goose down 800-fill UL sleeping bag, it's got similar temp ratings (15/43/52 vs. 15/30/50), only weighs 19 oz/528g and packs up smaller. It's going for about $90 on Amazon.

What an incredible sleeping bag! Down is an amazing material, you can always sleep on top of Mt Baldy, Mt San Jacinto or Mt San Gorgonio, if you are looking for Southern Califonia elevations between 10,000 - 11,500 feet in elevation, you live in the correct place!

Good review. Look at Wiggy's American made sleeping bags. He keeps up with the textile industry constantly. His bags are high quality and extreme weather campers use his products.

KKKKAAAARRRRYYYYNN doggy really suck. They are heavy. Doggy is all so a was. You probable missed the doggy war back in the mid 90s where doggy made death threats to people that Shoppe out about his bags. Backpacker magazine had to shut down their forum and delete the threads. His ultralit bag is 4+ it's. But glad if you like them.

Great review! I am just sorta getting into backpacking...I'm a seasoned camper, was in Boy Scouts (Eagle Scout here), been on numerous BWCA trips. Backpacking I'm finding is a different game, the synthetic 20 degree mummy I use for my BWCA trips is a monster compared most down bags. How was the waterproof/resistance on this bag- thinking of the times my sleeping bag has come in contact with the wall of the tent in the morning...and gotten damp. Synthetic is a bit more forgiving in that respect, but for weight and compactness, I am looking to one of these until I decide I like backpacking enough to buy a $3-400 down bag:-).

I am just getting back into backpacking as well and have been balancing price, weight, and quality in all my purchases to date. For now, I don't plan to do anything more than a one or two-night loop hikes. This sleeping bag, for me anyway, is the perfect balance of all three. Last week I ordered the 15-degree bag for a spring backpacking trip. Compared to my old synthetic bag (5 lbs plus) this bag weighs nothing. Klymit has a moderately priced Insulated sleeping pad that fits the price/weight/quality balancing act, for me anyway. If you purchased this bag and used it, comments?

If wind and/or water are a concern, get a lightweight bivy to go over the top. The inexpensive one from Snug Pac (sp?) is about the size of a soda can when in it’s pouch. I use that sometimes, or the more heavy duty bivy that is a part of the military sleep system (MSS). Both work fine, but there are thorns and other pokey things here in the Southwest, so I usually take the MSS one out.

Hi, thank you for sharing. What was the coldest temperature you've slept in this bag? Did you need to wear lots of clothes to feel comfortable? Thank you.

thanks for a great review. This bag or Kelty Cosmic 20 Degree, which one is more reliable/durable? I want to use in 30F temp. Also I am looking for a compact size, due to backpacking, or recommend any other sleeping bag. Thank you ahead.

Hey, not sure if I already answered this (lost all my comments when I migrated my channel), but yes it is easy to get back into the bag and still compresses down more.

Really doubt it is q5oF bag. Very few manufactures really accurately rate their bags. A 15oF bag would need 5inches of loft , that is not top and bottom but each. It only looked like it had 5 inches atmost total thickness. .

So is it water resistant?
@DavidWahlman
@DavidWahlman 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Earl, yes it does have a DWR coating (Durable Water Resistant) like most down products on the market these days. The material also helps with that in some senses; I've mentioned a downside of the bag is it can feel a bit too 'plastic-y' or 'nylon-y' and this affects it's water permeability. It keeps water out pretty well, but when you wash it for example, it's hard to get water in to wash it and then it holds it in too well; looks like you filled a garbage bag with water. You eventually have to just squeeze out what you can and then tumble dry for a LONG TIME. All that to say, yes, for normal condensation or a light spill on it or something, it is water resistant.

150 dollar is not cheap, it is expensive, very expensive, and I don't think you are qualified to say something is cheap anyway. 150 dollar is what people make in Haiti working day and night for six months. This sleeping bag should cost less than 50 dollar.

the cost on 800 fill down per pound is almost 50 dollars. Since when does someone need to be qualified to have an opinion. @David thanks for the review.

.. he meant cheap for a Dawn Sleeping bag, you need to stay with the context ... & yes, there are people in Mozambique that make 25c a day, but, eventually, they are not in the market looking for Sleeping bag ...lol
