WORDS: Published in 1870 by Caroline Maria Noel. The daughter of an Anglican clergyman, she abandoned writing poems and hymns when she was 20 due to debilitating illness. She resumed writing at the age of 40 while still an invalid. In 1861 she published a volume 'The Name of Jesus and Other Verses for the Sick and Lonely', intended as a collection for private devotion and consolation; it was updated in 1870 to include this hymn, now the only one of her texts that is popularly known.
