I recently purchased a book of Isaac Watt's hymns and have been trying to learn from him in some small way, how to express the deep truths of God's Word in modern worship. This video was so helpful! Thank You

Can you do a video on Bishop C.P. Jones' hymns
@EnHymn2 ай бұрын
Great recommendation!! I want you to know I went down a massive rabbit hole trying to understand the difference between the Church of Christ that I was more familiar with, the ones that don't use instruments, with the Church of Christ Holiness denomination of CP Jones. It's been informative and fun studying this so far, so thank you!

Today we sing such unscriptural, out of context hymns. This is a great tragedy. Song writers pick and choose what verses of Psalms to sing. They only sing the flowery verses, and stop short of singing the entire psalm in context. For example, Maranatha singers have a song by the name of Psalm 5. But they only sing the first few verses of that Psalm because those verses trickle the ears. But when it comes to God's views of sin and the sinner - They don't sing that. Hundreds of years of such practices have led to GREAT corruption within the church. Surely, Isaac Watts did a great deal of damage. We need to get back to the way it originally was - sing the Psalms, the whole Psalms. And nothing but the Psalms.
@EnHymn4 жыл бұрын
I largely agree with the premise that you've put forward. I agree that it is unacceptable that we only choose to sing the most watered down verses and ignore verses on judgement and sin. It all should have a place in our worship. That said... Is there then no use for spiritual song in the worship of the church? Also, not all Psalms are fit to sing. Shall we sing of dashing our enemy's babies against the rocks? (Psalm 137... no) We pick and choose Psalms to set. And there's a reason for that. It's hard to put the blame on Watts for what contemporary artists are doing, although he may have been an early trendsetter. Let me think more on that. There's a family named the Getty's that are leading a return to "singing the scriptures," although they write scriptural paraphrase and spiritual song also. Is that something you've looked at and have an opinion on?
@bbaer54423 жыл бұрын
I have thought of this exact thing Why don’t we sing of the Fear of God Or our sinful states . These songs would be powerful
@EnHymn3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! We can't shy away from the truth of our world that is sinful and in need of saving, and we can't forget how awesome God truly is, to fear the Lord.

Wasn't Watts Reformed?
@EnHymn4 ай бұрын
That sounds right, certainly reformed theologians cite him and his writings enough! I know his first post as a minister was with a Church of Christ congregation in England. It’s been a minute since I’ve done a deep dive on Watts, let me look at my notes.
