I remember at around 6 years old Hypno-Disc coming round to my primary school to see. I was an avid robot wars fan and it just seemed to show up unannounced, one of the best days of school for sure!

Hypnodisc was the first proper spinner in UK robot wars. There had never been a bot on the show capable of dealing out such absolute destruction. That's why the commentator was taken by surprise at the annihilation of Robogeddon and just started laughing hysterically.

I distinctly remember being a big fan of Razer back then, and wondering how a spinner could ever hope to defeat something like Razer. Lost interest in RobotWars shortly after that, as I found spinners (which quickly were taking over the format) to be rather dull.

That Robogeddon fight is a watershed moment in RW. It was pretty much the first fight where a robot was completely and utterly destroyed.

For anyone wondering specifically at the control problems Hypno-Disc seemed to suffer in its title fight against Chaos 2, that was mostly incurred in the previous round against Steg-O-Saw-Us. Some of the hard wall impacts had actually caused severe internal damage to the robot which wasn't able to be fixed in time - this was also the source of an almighty grinding noise which the Rose family initially thought was coming from Steg-O-Saw-Us. Thus, within about twenty seconds, Hypno-Disc lost all drive and was a sitting duck for the eventual two-time domestic champions.

Watching it, I was cringing at those noises from hypnodisc. You could really see it struggling to move at some point, they even raise the controller during the fight to try and improve it.

Just goes to show how underrated Steg-O-Saw-Us' run was in Series 3. For a reserve bot that wasn't supposed to be on the televised show, they did incredibly well and with such a fast machine for the time as well (Killerhurtz excluded of course)

David Moulds actually made a featherweight of Hypno-Disc named "360". Carbide probably took more inspiration from Sam Smith's featherweight "NST", which is almost identical in design, whereas the color scheme comes from David Moulds' drum spinner "720".

The sluggish performance of bots in the first few series was often caused by radio intereference from the pits behind the arena. You can see some of the Roboteers raising their controllers in the booths in an attempt for control. It's a shame that this plagued the show for as long as it did, as I expect it influenced some of the outcomes of fights.

I was only 10 when I first saw Hypno-Disc in action, when I first saw it lay into Robogeddon the way it did I was gobsmacked how bad the damage was. When it lost against Chaos 2 I literally cried when that happened. Then when series 8 came along I was reminded about that grand final when Carbide met Apollo. I wish we saw a rematch between Chaos 2 and Hypno-Disc when it had the srimech, that fight could go either way. However looking back you notice how much has changed since then and the reboot series, and not forgetting how Robogeddon was still functioning at the end of that fight despite the wheels being split and the chassis being warped out of shape.

@ They are in fact way better than old robots. Modern spinners can obliterate robots build from titanium, modern flippers can throw a heavyweight into the ceiling, and modern crushers can puncture through solid steel instead of just plastic and sheets of aluminum.

In the many years of Robot Wars, I think no one has had a greater impact (literally) on Robot Wars or rather the Robot Combat industry than HypnoDisc in terms of weapons development as the OG Horizontal Flywheel user. Jonathan Pearce must be totally impressed when he was commentating in Series 3 and witnessing this for the first time. IMO the best robot and most consistently strong robot not to win a title.

Did the perspex in which they stood behind to control their machines block radio waves of something? A lot of people when they were doing this often couldn't even get their war bots to move let alone fight!

Bear in mind that this was before 2.4Ghz radio systems. The radio systems back in the day were much more susceptible to interference. The petrol engines of the house robots, arena lighting, cameras and other recording equipment didn't help with interference. Not only that if the roboteers weren't careful with their controller antennas they could accidentally brush them up against the metal framework of the booths which would cause problems. Another thing to note is that with Evil Weevils team holding their controller high is that they were trying to remedy the control issues which might not have been radio interference, although they were just vainly trying to gain some mobility.

Phenomenal robot sadly let down by sometimes bad driving which cost them if they’d been more clinical and ruthless they’d won Robot Wars. Series 5 they were unbelievably deadly no one wanted to fight them but there bad driving denied us the fight and final we all wanted them vs Razer, sad it never happened. If they’d had the srimech they’d had more a chance beating Chaos 2 in Series three final.

I reckon razer would win. Hypno disk wasn't very manoeuvrable. Razor would out drive it, get behind and bite into it. Tornado showed juat ramming in razor dosnt work so the spinner would be there only chance of winning.

@@icer1249 I think your right the only way I could see hypnodisc beating razer would be for them to target razers wheels and make them immobile and maybe they get lucky try and damage the beak when it was lowered to be honest the right hit on side of razer could take them out but I’d favour razer I think to be honest but it could go either way the biggest issue they would have had was razer had a very good driver which is the one thing that cost hypnodisc some key fights and arguably a real second chance after series 3 of winning the title.

in regards to the whole who would win between Razer and Hypnodisc I say its whoever gets the first blow. as long as Hypnodisc gets the disc up to speed and Razer dont get along the side/rear its them. but if Razer can crush the disc before it gets up to speed or along the side/rear then they have it
