Wow! What a great review! I’ve played the Take 5 and just wanted to say I feel your really captured it’s sound and what it’s like to use. You also included a few details I hadn’t heard anywhere else (such as the distinction between triangle and saw core oscillators). I also wanted to add that I really enjoyed the Chorus and Tape Effects. The chorus is super lush and really adds a lot to a patch in my opinion. The tape effects are really well done. You can get some old school flange sound by modulating their timing, which I thought was really fun!

This video was very useful, but for a particular reason. I have found that I have a tendency to jump from knob to knob too casually. Sometimes it can be good because instinct and creativity are privileged, but in many other cases it is good to know how to linger calmly on the details.This video has shown how often I do not focus on the slightest variations it can give a small shift, but which is important in the final result. I will see in the future to improve in this respect. I am an amateur and I am learning many new things (I have recently retired, industrial automation sector) and I can finally dedicate myself to music as I would like. I already have the PRO 3 which is nothing short of fantastic. I think I will also add the TAKE 5 because I have not found anything that satisfies me in the polyphonic synts that I have tried to pair with it. (At least for my musical tastes as, and I say this with all the respect of those who think differently, I do not follow the musical production since 1975 onwards ...) Thanks, a greeting from Italy.

This was a great review, loved it! I would have liked to see/hear the filter resonance and how it perhaps changes (or not) with low volume input from the oscillators, as this can emphasize resonance further. Also, when you talk about the vintage knob, you mention the calibration differences between voices correctly. From what I've been told by an engineer, that's the actual reason, not necessarily any instabilities from electronic parts (unless we talk about really old gear with leaking capacitors and other parts being broken). A fresh-from-the-factory synth in e.g. 1979 didn't necessarily come with unstable components, but the calibration between voices and the part tolerances (i.e. same chips not behaving identical) were the deciding factors for the "vintage" sound.

It's been so long ago, I can't remember the details of that patch! I can definitely hear some highpass filtering, some velocity to cutoff, and some mild audio rate modulation on the filter (possibly also tied to velocity)? This is the best review I've seen of the Take 5! And it's the music you made that really makes it awesome. I like the vintage style sounds you made. One thing I'm wondering though is, do you think the Take 5 has a very bright sound? I noticed when you had the filter pretty low at 17:234, the sound was still too bright for my taste. However, you did have the distortion all the way up on that sound so I wonder if that had an effect on the sound.
@Bloom_Music2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The Take 5 can definitely go dark if that's your taste. On that particular patch, even though the physical position of the knob was very low, there was a lot of modulation going on to open the filter back up. If you haven't seen it, I'd recommend checking out the "Sounds Only" version of this video, linked in the description. It has a ~8 minute section at the beginning of a bunch of different patches I made. You can hear some more dark sounding patches there.

It is 27 June,2023 as I comment. Earlier today, I assessed this model as being like the love child of a Prophet 600 and an Oberheim Matrix 6. The “conversation piece” is how durable it is and how well it holds up without the “furniture characteristics” of the Prophet models. Great review, you've sold it to me! Regarding the sequencer, is there any way to transpose the sequence or is the way demonstrated in you review the only option?
@Bloom_Music3 жыл бұрын
Good question, I should have covered that in the review! Switching to unison mode allows you to transpose the sequence as you'd typically expect. So you could dynamically switch in and out of unison to transpose and kind of build a performance. Only caveat is if you're doing something like this live, you'll need to make sure you've got unison mode set to only a single voice before you start, otherwise, you'll temporarily get stacked voices when you switch into unison mode, which could be jarring.

Exellent review , i wonder if grabbing a Prophet REv 2 8/ 16 voices is the equivalent in desktop format (with its two layers ability ) specially if the fx and modulation is similar ....
@Bloom_Music Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to play with the Rev2, so I don't have any personal experience. I'd expect they sound similar, but there's a few tricks up the Take 5's sleeve that I think will yield a slightly different character. Things like the drive, vintage, resonance compensation, and effects stand out vs. the Rev2. (While I don't have personal experience with the Rev2 effects, I liked the new effects in the Take 5 much better than the effects in my Prophet 6, so I'm assuming the same for the Rev 2). So, I think the Take 5 could probably do a good Rev 2 impression, but the Rev 2 would struggle keeping up with the Take 5 when you start to introduce some of its unique attributes. But this is all speculation, as I haven't actually used the Rev 2. :)

The oscillator section is much nicer than on the Prophets. End of story. This synth probably exists because Focusrite suggested a departure from the Prophet tradition and a lower-price offering, and it will obviously have mass appeal.

Excellent review, thorough and very cleanly made and clearly presented. The synth sounds stunning and I am a big fan of the mod matrix, dedicated reverb and vintage knob incorporation. However... holy cow that panel flex at 23:40! Were you pressing especially hard, or did you notice it with regular usage (pressing buttons around the centre, for instance)?
@jasonmoyer3 жыл бұрын
I demo'd one (and ultimately bought it) that was sitting next to a Rev2 at the shop, and both synths had the exact same amount of panel movement. I just checked and if I push firmly on the center bottom of the panel it flexes some, if I use the patch selection buttons in that area with the normal amount of pressure required to use those buttons it doesn't move at all.
@jasonmoyer3 жыл бұрын
I just checked, and there are posts on the Sequential forum mentioning the flex on the Rev2 (which I observed) and also the OB-6. I'm guessing the P6 is similar. I don't mean to imply that it makes it acceptable, but apparently it's not something unique to this synth as far as DSI goes.
@Bloom_Music3 жыл бұрын
I was definitely pressing harder than you would ever naturally press in normal use. The only time I ever notice the flex in day-to-day use is when switching between the first four or so banks, where you're pressing right at the bottom, middle of the panel. The combined actuation force of the bank button along with the number button results in about 1/16" of deflection.

Based purely on sound design capability, I prefer the Take 5. It has greater modulation potential, a more advanced architecture, and I like the effects better. However, I MUCH prefer the module format. I got tired of lugging the Take 5 around. It's not as light and mobile as Sequential's marketing would lead you to believe! So it will depend on what your priority is. If portability is a major factor, I'd lean towards the P6. But based purely on sound, I personally prefer the Take 5.

Compared to Rev2 in aspect of modulation. What do you lose with 2 extra LFOs, can any explain hypothetical situation/sound designing? Thanks!
@Bloom_Music3 жыл бұрын
The more LFOs you have, the more opportunity you will have for independent modulations. This can provide more options for movement, but can also get messy very quickly if you are not using subtle modulation depths. But generally, if modulation potential is a priority for you, more modulation sources is better. Two LFOs is generally the minimum I want to work with; a single LFO feels limiting. For example, I often like to be able to modulate the filter and pitch independently. I don't work with synths with 3+ LFOs very often, but it opens up some creative options like modulating the pitches of multiple oscillators independently, or having spare LFOs to modulate the rates of other LFOs. It just opens up more creative potential. Overall, if your goal is bread and butter, classic synth sounds, you won't need four LFOs. But if your priority is crazy modulation potential, more LFOs will be better.
@thisistherealkit3 жыл бұрын
@@Bloom_Music i do agree. Pro 2 has sinewave , but its just a filtered triangle right..?
@Bloom_Music3 жыл бұрын
Technically, yes, you can use a filter to shave a triangle to a sine. However, this limits your filter to that duty alone and severely restricts your sound design potential. As an example, lets say I want to make a sound where Osc 1 is a saw wave, and then Osc 2 is a sine wave an octave down to fill out the bottom end. If Osc 2 is a triangle, and I'm trying to use the filter to shave it into a sine, I'm also filtering Osc 1, and potentially removing way more of that signal than desired. By contrast, if Osc 2 is actually a sine wave, my filter is free to shape Osc 1 however I want, while still getting a rock solid bottom end from the Osc 2 sine wave. This is a simplified example, but as a general rule, you don't want your filter restricted just to cleanup. You want it free for more creative duties! One point of clarity- The Pro 2 is not an analogue synth. It uses digital oscillators!

How much this synth is better than DeepMind6?
@donaldjordan17473 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say either is better than the other. They are very different synthesizers and it depends on what your priorities are. For me, I prefer the raw sounds of the Take 5's oscillators and filter, and it has way more raw sound possibilities just due to the more complex oscillators. I also like the vintage mode and how immediate the controls are (the DM6 is very menu dive-y). So my preference is the Take 5. However, the DM6 is obviously significantly cheaper, so if cost is a consideration, that's a major plus. It also has really good (and more) envelopes, if that's something you care about. Ultimately, you'll have to decide what your priorities are and make a decision based off of that. The two synths are more different than alike, so it's hard to make a direct comparison!

@horder23443 жыл бұрын

The digital element was though almost a deal breaker for me but having taken the plunge its definitely got more analogue than a roland Gaia for sure and it does sound nice.
@Bloom_Music3 жыл бұрын
Uh, oh. Gearslutz is leaking. ;) For those of you who aren’t as obsessive about this stuff as PaulGBass and myself, let me explain- The Take 5 has analog oscillators and filters, but has digital amps, effects, and modulation. There is no strict definition of exactly what an “analog” synth is, so this has caused some debate in other, more nerdy places of the internet. I am part of the camp that believes that the oscillators and filters are what inject the “mojo” that everyone is talking about when they praise analog synths. Typically, the chain of components that follow don’t have much of an impact on the sound, so whether they are digital or not isn’t part of the consideration of whether the instrument is considered “analog” or not. This can get very muddy, because most of the people taking shots at the Take 5 would defend the Prophet 5 to their dying breath, despite it having digital envelopes. There is no “official” rule on which components are ok to be digital in an “analog” synth, vs. which aren’t. The specific component that has every one riled up on the Take 5 is the digital VCAs. One could argue that there are certain synths where the VCAs have an audible impact on the synth’s “sound”. In my opinion, the modern Sequential instruments have transparent VCAs and do not fall into that group. So the replacement of the VCAs with digital components has little practical impact to the synth’s sound. If you are still reading this and haven’t fallen asleep with boredom yet, the point is, don’t get caught up in the debate of whether the Take 5 is true “analog” or not. It’s an exercise in pedantry. Just listen to the thing and decide if you like it!

Very well said, totally agree, if I like the sound of it, and I really like the sound of the Take 5, it makes no difference to me, ESPECIALLY in a synth like this where people are genuinely surprised at the pricepoint compared to other Sequential synths

@@ConenRuam digital envelopes don't effect the sound, they just send cv to control it.. a vca does.. I'm not saying that it is bad or T5 sounds bad.. but it is different.. don't pretend like digital envelopes are anything the same..

@@wurlinnawurl sure, but if you're suggesting every analogue VCA imparts a strong character into a synth that's not true either, it all depends on how it's implimented

Great video but you have a way to low frame rate set up. It’s flickering a fuck ton in certain sequences 🥲

Have to agree to disagree on that one. 24FPS or bust. 😉
