Contrary to Russian post-war mythology, in reality, Russia was allied with Germany 1939-1941 (only until Adolf decided to end it). They jointly invaded Poland together, and Russia provided Germany with a naval base and further support pretty much right until they got backstabbed

one thing I'd be relieved if TimesRadio could explore with such conversations is that mentioned different attitude towards that threat in Germany/France/Austria vs. UK. Just physically UK is much safer from RuZZian tanks as the others. But why is public opinion in UK so much more aware of the real security threat? Why do UK political representatives so much more openly talk about the security architecture not meeting current demands any more? Why are so many more Brits so much more empathic with Ukraine and Ukrainians? Is it the similar horrendous history??? Is it more RuZZian influence in public debate in the other countries? Getting more behind that seems to be urgent and a key in a much needed better collective resilience.

Quite a lot of Germans are sympathetic, too, but I got the feeling Germans´ relationship with war is like the relationship of an ex-alcoholic with alcohol. They try not to go too near it because they think it´s safer for the world. But they´ve increased their defence and Ukraine budget for 2024, which is great. Generally - with the exception of Bulgaria, Poland and Lithuania - the list of European countries still supporting Ukraine is becoming surprisingly similar to the list of countries with some Protestant tradition. From Czechia to Denmark and Britain. No idea why that is so. On individual level, there are lots of Catholics and Orthodox helping Ukraine. But on state level, the Protestant history seems to matter somehow.

Excellent. Just one point. She was, rightly, searching for the proper explanation of what Russian society is striving for. But, I think it goes deeper than an attempt at a de-individualized society. The description of the society Russia is striving for is the society they never really left: medieval tsarism. It is not so much about change but about a fear of enlightenment and the obligation to think for yourself. Better build fictional stories about mother Russia and great Russians than deal with the world as it is. In a sense, they are the ultimate woke. Truth has no meaning whatsoever for them. For Russians it is solely about their feelings and how they are always victims and this justifies everything they do.

Jade McGlynn is a notch above the usual Times types you talk to. How did this happen? How did you persuade her to appear? She’s good.

People also forget about those hooligans who attacked the England fans in Marseille in 2016. MANY of those Russian Ultras were extremely Far Right and, if you recall, the Russian government failed to condemn their actions and there was some evidence that certain members of Putin's government actually supported them.

Explain what you mean by "culture" in this context. Perhaps you mean 'history' but must remember that the colonial powers were no saints and the USA systematically exterminated the indigenous population of its part of N.America. Indeed, the USA never developed medical and social care systems such as reliable pensions, whereas Russia had these on regional bases before the USSR centralized how these were funded. Check for yourself and you will be surprised.
