I've been surfing for about 10 years and my level is somewhere around yours. I just bought myself my first foamie ever, very similar to Ben Gravy's model. Old school quad 5ft8 fishy and I love it from day one. Surfed it from choppy 2ft to clean 6ft and it's great fun. Some of my other boards now dont get used that much anymore:)))

Hey brother, seeing your video, I can tell you weren't properly positioned. The hypto has way more volume on the nose, and that's why you felt like it wasn't paddling right.

I got this board for my 9 years old son in 5’4 29.5 liters and I ended up using it myself. I weight 164 pounds and it goes great for me. It is not a board for soft summer surf for sure. I rode it in waist to shoulder height beach breaks and it was really fun. I hope this helps!

Interesting! Seems like there is a big difference between different softops. Waiting for a MR Twin Epoxy Softop, 5'9" 39L, from what I understand its quite stiff as it has glassfibre and epoxy under the soft layer.I feel like the Catch Surf are litte too flexy, and slows down abit once up, but maybe its just me being really out of shape.

I had a similar experience with 3D thruster fins but after putting classic keel twin fins plus a futures nubster the board came alive. It's still a soft board and the rail engagement and drive is not like a normal surfboard but these keels go some way to addressing that as they certainly give it drive and the cut out still allows for good turns and keeps it loose. I was about to sell this board - now it's a keeper!

Need to go up in volume. I bought the 6’8 for myself and weigh 70 odd kilos. Board sits higher and paddles well. My daughter uses it for a SUP now.

I feel this review is unfair to the board and anyone reading may get the wrong view. I'm 95kg, 5'11, intermediate surfer riding the same board, chucked in 2+1 T1's and this thing is fast, very sharp and responsive on the turns. It's a little slow to paddle, but none more than expected. Catches waves easily, caught me a bit how quick it moves when it gets on. I absolutely love it, needs clean waves and will rip. Twins will change your view, not many reviews out there on this so maybe run an update on twins. Cheers.

Hey Stephen! Thanks for watching. If I compare it to other foamies, the soft top version of Hypto Krypto is not worth the money. Tbh I will have more fun on a cheaper version of catch surf or Mick Fannins Soft Tops. Check them out! They are light, don't absorb the water! I'm very impressed.

I bought the 6’4 Hypto Krypto softie and, at first, i loved it, despite the AU$905 pricetag. It really helped my paddling at an overcrowded beach (Bondi, Sydney), where i really need to get on the waves first, if i want to surf any at all. 4 sessions later, with conditions clean offshore 4-6ft, i decided to see what it could do in some better waves. 1 duck dive on the paddle out and i felt the nose crack underneath me. Its still connected in one piece and a smooth base, just with a large crease along the face. I can feel it buckling beneath me and even hear the sound of the fiberglass slowly cracking under the crease. No repairmen in Sydney will go near it. The lovely people at Hayden Shapes, whilst helpful, basically told me I the best they could do was provide a 20% discount on a brand new board. Honestly, i’d rather buy a second hand 6ft foamie for a Bondi grovel, rather than spend AU$750+ on a brand new model of a board that broke after only a few surfs. Long story short, loved the board itself, but its almost TOO innovative (you cant get it fixed anywhere!), no durability = not a very good softie.
@SkipperSurfReview
@SkipperSurfReview 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Joshua! Thanks for your input! I can really see how complicated the repair can get with the materials. Bummer. Have you ever tried MF Softboards? I personally like them and compared to the most popular Catch Surf, they are lighter and more durable which means they will get less waterlogged over time.

Mine surfed good in most conditions yet after about 18 months it creased in the middle of the board. It’s still rideable but definitely not like it was. I do think it’s overpriced at $700 and if I ever got another soft board I would look at other manufacturers like MF or JS.

I've used this board... it doesn't paddle "slow" for a 5'4. Most likely, it's your level of surfing and where you're trying to catch the wave that makes it feel slow. Take off later, pop up sooner, get your stance right (your stance is too narrow), learn how to pump properly and this board will work.
@SkipperSurfReview
@SkipperSurfReview Жыл бұрын
Could by my level of surfing, but after trying so many boards, I do think that this foam version sucks. I’ve just got a used 5’10” Hypto Krypto in FutureFlex😜

You might be riding it too big, I have the 5’4 and it goes great for me. No trouble with slow paddling at all. Also you never tried it with the twinny set up you intended to, most other reviews I watched highly suggested the twin + 1 in it to bring it to life. Either way, sorry you didn’t enjoy the board and thanks for the content 🙏
@SkipperSurfReview
@SkipperSurfReview 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! I doubt.. it actually should paddle much better than a shorter version! May be I got spoiled with other boards like 5’7” Album Disorder or 5’4” DaveySKY Skiff and it didn’t live up to my expectations lol.
@Slowchap
@Slowchap 2 жыл бұрын
@@SkipperSurfReview I can see you surf better on the Skiff but TBH it seemed marginal in terms of the turns you were doing. The difficulty you had paddling and catching waves looked to me like a timing issue - jumping up too soon or too late (and your turns too). You may have overlooked the Skiff has an extra 1.3L of volume which probably helped too. Would I be right in saying you are quite familiar with the Skiff?
@SkipperSurfReview
@SkipperSurfReview 2 жыл бұрын
@@Slowchapyou may be right in terms of timing. I was hoping HK would have any chance to glide into the waves a little bit earlier instead of sitting on the edge of closing out wave and taking chances to screw up wave and wipeout. I think I just got spoiled with my Album Disorder/DaveySky Skiff/Hydrodynamica Mini Simmons to not struggle catching waves at all. It was just slow to even paddle around, not specifically catching waves.
@Slowchap
@Slowchap Жыл бұрын
@@SkipperSurfReview it sounds weird to say this but I have noticed a board with the wrong fins in it doesn't perform well and even seems not to paddle well either. My HK soft once I found the fin set that made the board "click" seemed to even improve the paddle into take off. It's happened a couple of times before and just recently with this 5'9" Lost Hydra I bought a month ago. Took a lot of experimentation to find the right find set up for me Large FCS Performer quad set with a home made nubster. Until I got the set up right I just couldn't get it to paddle in properly. Though it's possible over time I've also tuned into the board's sweet spot for paddling too.

Knee high dribble is hardly a Hypto's happy wave place whether it be a Future flex eps or a soft top Hypto. Take it out in a decent wave and it would be a different result. Watch Craig's review of the Hypto soft for a review in better waves by a better surfer.
@SkipperSurfReview
@SkipperSurfReview 2 жыл бұрын
Haha.. the point was to show how bad it works in small beach breaks. It’s an opposite of what HS says. I would prefer to surf future flex eps HK. Craig surfs completely different waves with more power. I can’t relate to it.
@petewebb5149
@petewebb5149 2 жыл бұрын
@@SkipperSurfReview the Hypto design was made in Sydney...that's where Craig surfs so the HS brief is accurate. Writing the board off because it didn't work in what you were trying to ride it in was rough but kudos to you for saying what you thought.
