Where is the canister for a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe? I'm having the same problem with putting gas in the car. I also put a gas treatment in and now it will not start. Any recommendations?

Curious? I have a bad canister, pellets were in the lines. What would happen if you took (shake or blew) all of the carbon pellets out and blew out the lines then reinstalled?
@davidst4899 жыл бұрын
Well time will tell. When I was blowing out the pellets piece of what looked like foam filter material was also coming out. So I figured it had rotted out and was clogging the lines also. The in-line filter from the can going to the motor sounds like a great idea.I could use a small breather filter .I was thinking of using a 1" hole saw on the top to refill the can then buy two rubber plugs.

+davidst489 I would try it with the filter 1st because the canister is spring loaded internally to keep the pellets from bouncing around so if you cut a hole in it the spring pressure would just push out more pellets and/or you wouldn't be able to force any more pellets into it anyway. If you shake it and you don't hear the pellets moving around, there should be plenty of pellets in there to do the job.

The canister is empty and I installed a new Purge Valve, the one that is at the engine. The purge valve is genuine Hyundai part not a Dorman fit all had problems with that before. Anyway 250 miles and no CK Engine light.

+davidst489 Thanks for the update, glad to here it worked and yeah the Dorman purge valve AND the Dorman Canister vent valves are garbage. Where did you get your purge and how much was it? Please let us know if you have any issues with the empty canister later on down the road. I'm guessing the light won't come on but I was wondering if you might get some fuel smell or engine flooding after fueling and start up. We're hoping it works for ya David. Thanks again!

just take the hoses off and let it dry out a couple days after you figure out if it needs a tank vent solenoid or not. it may need a canister purge solenoid if the car runs rough in drive at idle. you can test both solenoids to see if they work with vacuum gauge and 12 volt test wire and a ground wire. it just takes a little time. parts are expensive just to replace without testing. watch more videos to find answers.

could you bi pass the box by takeing both the in hose and the out hose and connecting them together ?
@BENNIEDARRELL7 жыл бұрын
your computer takes readings from all components and it tests pressure in the gas tank. your car will never run right if you don't fix it properly.

similar problem w/ my 2000 elantra. No start after topping off fuel. i replaced purge solenoid valve. it was fine for years. I recently topped off after fuel pump auto shut off and CEL code p0441 evap system came on. Thx for info. I wool look at evap system again, blow charcoal it of lines & get new canister; valve... as needed.

drop the canister? thtas not easy pal u got too remove the gas tank!
@gardenstateflatlandb10 жыл бұрын
Not sure about other years, but on 2001-2006 Elantras, the charcoal canister is located behind the left rear wheel under the bumper. No need to remove the gas tank.

Yeah, but if carbon was soaked with fuel it won't be effective anymore. I don't believe it will re-activate at 275f, not even 275C is enough to properly re-activate carbon in regular atmosphere. You need temps closer to 600C. You won't get codes for bad carbon in the emission system, you will just be polluting the outside air more and/or smelling fuel sometimes.

2002 Sonata, having the same problem. Thanks for the video.

My problem with my sonata is that it won't let me fuel up without kicking off the pump. Found coal in the line. Lets just say you remove the canister ... will it fix the problem? (laws not considered here)

Using a propane tank around fuel saturated carbon pellets? Seems like that is asking to become severely injured or brainless....think about it, you might want to take this posting down.

that's what i said, a red hot butter knife and gas and fumes, no way
@BENNIEDARRELL7 жыл бұрын
man, i don't think sticking a red hot knife into a canister that possibly has raw gas and gas fumes in it is a good idea. kaboom, ya know what i mean. it's not a chance too many are willing to take. i'm not. those pellets can back up into the bigger hose coming from the fill tube and clog it too if the tank vent solenoid isn't working. clean them out of the hose and let the canister set a day or two to dry up. blow air through it too. then put it back on without taking it apart and blow through it like you said to do with the radiator hose.. just test and make sure the tank vent solenoid and the canister purge solenoid are working too. if the car runs rough in gear at idle most likely the canister purge solenoid that runs to the plenum is bad or a hose that runs to or from it has a vacuum leak. use a vacuum gauge to test it and the lines. use 12 volt to test the solenoids to see if they open. thanks

It went well Juan, I changed the Vent Valve (some people call it the Closed Vent Valve or Canister Solenoid) I dried the carbon pellets, dried the filter (it was soaked with water, can't imagine how that happened) and the car is running fine with no check engine light

How did you dry it ? Did you use hair dryer or something? Please help
