Күн бұрын

This week on Buckle Up Harry and Rob try to decide what is the best small hot hatch, all things considered. On one side you have purity, practicality and a more affordable price tag with the Hyundai i20 N. On the other you have ferocious performance from a true homologation special, with a price tag to reflect, from the GR Yaris. So which would the boys recommend to you, watch on to find out...
Competing in a segment against rivals such as the Ford Fiesta ST, Volkswagen Polo GTi, Seat Ibiza Cupra, Mini Cooper S, Skoda Fabia vRS, Peugeot 208 GTi, Vauxhall Corsa VXR, VW Golf GTi, Ford Focus ST, Honda Civic Type R, Renault Megane RS, Skoda Octavia vRS, Cupra Leon, BMW M135i, Audi RS3, Mercedes AMG A45 and Vauxhall Astra VXR these two are our favourites.

I tried all and ordered the I20N but I'd say the I20N is the budget more usable option , the GR Yaris is the more hardcore option, but the I30N is the most "hot hatch" of the lot. That is insanely fast for the price especially with the DSG. We don't get a manual I30N in our region so the I20N felt more fun and had better fuel economy. I'd say the GR Yaris has better quality interior than the I20N but is much more dated.

The Yaris is awesome and it's so cool Toyota actually decided to create it. However I bought the i20n a year ago and would do it again if it was lost and I had to pick again. I think the hyundai is the better representation of the 'classic hot hatch formula'. The Yaris is more special and is rightful celebrated for that. For most people the hyundai is probably the better more sensible proposition. Cheaper and more practical but not less fun.

But it isn't. A cult classic is a 90s Japanese sports car. The GR Yaris didn't and won't ever compete in the WRC. Sure it's a homologated rally car but seriously the hype is a bit over rated and i suspect the value is going to drop soon, i've already seen a low mileage used one take a whole month to sell, UNDER the retail price. The hype is dying already and dealers and private sellers will be forced to drop prices soon, especially as Toyota are already working on a new GR Yaris lol.

Thank you very much for this. From many of these comments, they say we shouldn’t compare them, but you have to understand that both are based on rally cars regardless. Whether you like it or not, both cars are HATCHBACKS. The i20n is perfect for hot hatch spirit, the GR is made for the track or drift circuits in my eyes. I’ve driven the GR, and it’s very very quick for normal roads.

I have a 2014 Fiesta ST from new & would not have considered any other car ! Until the GR Corolla was announced in spring. The ST is (was?) the "best" winter (snow belt) car. (of course fitted with "winter ice studded tires- which are the sh*t:) Front wheel drives are fun - but to drift/slide around you need to jack the parking brake - great - but not as great as a RWD centric car. So - why did I immediately put a deposit on the GR Corolla - simply - the "30/70" split knob. Now I can hoon around corners while feathering the throttle & have better control (less erratic) of your drift. What better reason could there be🤙🏻

Enjoyed the Video. Observations... 1. "Circuit Pack" (GR Yaris) is the one to go for, yet you agree it can't be exploited fully without a track. Have you driven the standard car? Standard car originally retailed at under 30k. A relative bargain for a handbuilt homologation car. 2. I own a GR and it is extremely hard to drive it at the limit on public roads, so, the i20 interests me, but the Toyota will be better engineered but clearly compromised when it comes to practicality. 3. The obvious comparison is Fiesta ST versus i20n. Quite similar cars. Albeit the ST is less gimmicky but residuals and reliability will soon catch up with it. Lastly, fair play for comparing these two; few have bothered.

Thanks for mentioning the standard car!!! Refreshing. I went for the standard set up but with the Convenience pack. The BEST choice, imo, for a daily blast, coming from an original 2017 i30N performance pack in performance blue, the best colour for the newer 120N i think. The i30N had adaptive dampers, was and sounded great, but it suffered significantly with wheelspin and bunny hopping in cool, wet weather. Even the refreshed version still does. That's very poor R and D. The i20N was actually my second choice, but hyundai took an age to actually bring it to the showrooms, plus my heart wanted awd. I have great respect for the i20N. After 3 test drives of the, only available circuit pack, I couldn't accept the many compromises in daily usage and comfort from what I was driving. I therefore watched 100's of hours of videos from numerous countries to get a true comparison of the differences re the specs. 2 main things stood out, possibly affecting dynamic differences, especially for road usage only and applicable to me. The dunlops vs ps4s's and open diff's vs 2 torsens. The former eliminated by changing, the latter Totally irrelevant for road usage. Driven the circuit pack 5 times now, also when mine was in for servicing, and the last occasion for over 4 hours. It was only on that fifth occasion that I managed to feel the torsens on slightly damp conditions, esc on and exaggerating turn in off a small roundabout where mine just digs in and flashes the esc light with No issues. The circuit 2 or 3 out of the 5 same drives activated the front, and possibly rear, torsens. It was too brief to be certain. Esc light also flashing. However, it properly yanked the steering wheel, needing significant correction, as well as pulling in the wheels. Arguably felt a little fake vs the open diff's. Similar to a late focus RS MK3, fiesta st previous shape, mazda 3 mps and possibly the focus RS MK2, all previously driven over the years. After driving the circuit pack on this longer occasion, it was lovely getting back into mine which is far more relaxing to drive, especially over any significant distance, due to slightly lighter steering and a much more road biased suspension set up. And that's b4 the benefits of all the Convenience pack extras! I'm by no means slating the circuit pack's affectivness or its abilities on a track, especially when esc is turned off fully and it's driven in sport mode 30/70. It's certainly the spec for those conditions, however I'd personally favour many rwd's such as mx5, S2000, bmw's etc or a pukka fwd Civic type R or maybe even the various N's? Even the circuit pack needs lowering etc to make it more track focused. The GR4, with its higher ride settings vs numerous much lower and similar cars is actually far more relevant for real world driving, speed bumps poor road surfaces, B roads and perhaps a dirt track alongside some scramblers. But for the road, especially in the standard spec and keeping esc on, track mode 50/50 is supreme and it simply needs good rubber. On the information above and with reference to this video's topic, I personally believe the standard gr4 car, ideally with the brilliant convenience pack extras, is actually the perfect choice and gives the perfect Harmony between these two in dynamic fun and comfort/toys. Unless you're obviously thinking 🥱 practically 😉 Waited 7.5 months, with slight anticipation of my choice, and totally delighted upon receival. I must ADD, I had Goodyear Eagle f1 asymmetric 5's put on b4 collection, binning the stock dunlops on the standard car, which I personally believe were chosen to show the only main dynamic differences on the road! I'm also referring to VERY spirited road usage only, no track usage and always keeping esc on! I had ps4s's on my i30N, binning the pirelli pz4's that were great in the dry, shite in the wet. They've apparently actually improved, lol, since... I chose the f1's due to firmer sidewalls, knowing that the standard set up was softer and with slightly more lean. Probably about 20% softer. Went with asymmetric vs supersport for better wet grip. Actually just put A6's on. Too soon for a comparison but my hopes, due to much research, are high.

He, in no uncertain terms, has expressed the wish he'd gone for the standard car in standard white! He's not fussed about the Convenience pack extras and complains about his car's firm suspension, especially after going out in mine! If you've not changed your tyres yet, the asymmetric 5's or newer 6's are arguably the best choice for only road usage 👍

@@BuckleUpShow NO, PX'ing to toyota!! Very different and certainly not nonsense. Plus many people, including a friend, have done the pcp deals or similar for 2 or 3 years. Many realising it's either not what carwow and co actually promised, too impractical, especially in circuit pack guise, ie not the best daily, or too expensive to run, etc. Affectively, not thoroughly researching. And at this point they're TOTALLY fleeced by the dealership. Better still, it's quite difficult to see due to likely purchasing with a PX at a miserable price as a deposit, then the various Apr deals, then some customers leaving early due to the above points I've raised re ownership, likely financial penalties for not completing the entirety of their pcp contract, then understanding the exactness of their financial deal/agreement being quite confusing! They also are likely to change to another toyota, perhaps more economical etc, in their mind at least, but without looking at the entire yearly costs and over however many years! I bought outright and, yes, was also spit roasted on my i30N performance pack PX, which I had no interest in selling privately. The fact that the gr4 had/has NO haggle opportunities too is also a significant factor. I still bought mine as above. My choice, as wasn't anything else applicable to my desires at the time. I'm simply pointing out the facts. No need to be on the defensive. Lastly, taking all of the above into consideration, and seeing late 2020 cars for sale on toyota forecourts for late 30's to early 40K, I suggest my original comment wasn't an exaggeration.

You can't really compare the two one is a very special once in a generation Homologation special the other just another hot hatch be it a nice one but not in the same league of the GR. Watch Chris Harris Top Gear review on you tube to understand why.

@@BuckleUpShowI totally agree that how a car makes you feel rather than it’s performance/capabilities is key to what defines a great car for most true petrolheads - ie: it’s a subjective opinion unique to the individual. As an example I prefer driving my 1995 MR2 Mk2 than my GRY because it allows me to reach its limits at relatively legal speeds whereas the GRY is so planted on the Lincolnshire B roads where I live, I run out of driving talent long before the car runs out of grip. That said (and as the OP pointed out), the GRY is a homologation special and as such isn’t really a direct competitor to the i20 or any other mass produced hot hatch (in terms of future residuals, legacy etc). That’s not to say the i20 isn’t a more fun/special car to drive (I’m sure it’s very good), it’s just the two cars address different customer bases.

The GR Yaris Could of Been a Lot better In its Design 3 Cylinder Engine Was A Mistake As it Makes No Noise at all And its Supposed to be a Rally Car ? Yet the Yaris GRMN Sounded a Lot better and Had Centre Exit Exhaust as Standard ? Most Rally Cars Don't use Torsen Diffs Due to Them only Working With the Opposite wheels in contact With the Road ,They use Plated Diffs Also the 4WD System is Flawed as it Can Overheat and Shut down As it Works by Constantly Slipping ! The Engine Valve Train is Weak as Well. At Least Hyundai Make Cars You Can Actually Buy and Drive Without Spending A Load of Money ,After all You Are Limited to What you Can Do on UK Roads and the GR Will be A Lot More Boring to Drive than that i20N I Think the i20N is a Good car for the Price its at ,Theres a Lot to like As Standard and No Mods Really needed to have a Lot of Fun.

Hi Pete, while I agree that in the real world, and therefore most of the time, the i20N will be more fun, I do think you're being a little harsh on the GR Yaris. Yes, its a three-cylinder engine, but its also the most powerful one currently in production. Noise is a tricky one as you're right, the noise is very muted outside the vehicle. Petrol particulate filters are largely to blame for this, but on the inside, I would argue the induction noise from the engine largely makes up for the lack of noise on the outside. With regards to the exhaust placement, this will likely be down to the GRMN being front wheel drive and the GR being 4WD. The exhaust will need to be routed around the 4WD system at the rear and therefore cannot have a central exit. I think Toyota's priority was to make the GR as fast as a hot hatch can be on the road, rather than off it. Given they knew it would never actually race, a lot of effort will have been transferred to making sure on road capability was top tier. On the price front, while the i20N is undoubtably the cheaper of the two, a full homologation special in the same vein as a Delta Intergrale or Quattro for £33k is pretty good value for money if you ask me. Especially when you look at the pricing of the new Civic Type-R - £47k!
@Cernunn0s90
@Cernunn0s90 Жыл бұрын
The 3 cylinder is a brilliant motor, and far more engaging than the 4-pot Hyundai motor (I have owned an i30N). The reason it makes no noise is because the stock exhaust has a very, very effective silencer on it. Swap it with a Milltek and it sounds great. The 4wd overheating only really happens with people who push them HARD, and I mean really hard, on track, and you can get a relatively cheap official Toyota undertray with cooling ducts to fix the issue. 99% of owners will probably never experience the issue, and those who are able to drive hard enough probably don't mind a couple of mods to alleviate it. "The Engine Valve Train is Weak as Well." No, it isn't. You can push 320hp on these stock with zero problems. If you upgrade valve springs you can push 480, before you need bigger bolts to keep the headgasket in place. These have turned out to be very solid and very tunable. I came from an i30N to a GR Yaris, they are both amazing cars, but the GR is more fun as a toy. The i30N is an incredible all-rounder.
