I drove this car from the Netherlands to France and Germany this past summer on vacation. I loved it! It is very comfortable to drive and ride in. The lane assist is excellent! I would highly recommend this car. By the way, I do not give a hoot about acceleration. The Ionic is more than powerful enough. I don't need or want a rocket ship!

Two things that bugged me about this video. I get that it’s a first look and a quick look but here’s the thing. Longer range = longer charging. Also, DC fast chargers slow waaaay down as they approach 80% so charging to 90% is going to take longer. Why not tell us how far the charge cycle got after 20-30 minutes (which is what it takes for my 2017 Ioniq to reach 80% on a DC fast-charge). That’s useful information. Also, you spent almost 1/2 the video playing with the controls on the new touchscreen. It might have been nice to see the rest of the interior. Is there still inductive charging for cellphones? Is the charger in the same place (which was really handy!) and can you now use the inductive charging pad and use apple play at the same time (which isn’t possible in the 2017 model)? One thing I’ve noticed about EV is that, no matter what the range possible, you still only get the same amount of range back after a 20-30 minute charge (Tesla’s may be different but not from what I’ve heard) so as professional reviewers, a lot of you guys need to be clear on that. Unless you’re willing to make a 1 to 2 hour pit stop every time, your 400-500km range is only good once a day.

Yes that is quite evident. The problem is that practically all car companies "must" develop their own version of infotainment software and hardware. In most cases these solutions can't come close in terms of performance and efficiency as the ones that ie. cell phone companies develop for their products. To have something like that in their cars would cost a ridiculus amount of money, which they are not willing to pay for. They would rather have some much less costly solution, developed in house, they can have complete control of. I work in one such company so this is also my personal experience on the subject.

@@patreekotime4578 I have to disagree. You can get $300 android phones with 4k OLED displays and butter smooth performance in 2019. The simple answer is these car companies are not tech companies and don't care about the user experience so are happy to stick a $100 entertainment system in the car. If a small aftermarket manufacturer can make a custom smooth in-car entertainment system these billion-dollar corporations have no excuse other than laziness, greed and lack of interest.

Thats sad. The Ioniq with it's aerodynamic shape is the car made for long trips in my opinion. So all the time I hoped, perhaps the car can charge fast to 70% or so. But now, it has a significant disadvantage. Tesla has improved it charging speed to newer levels. You can cruise thousand kilometres with half an hour charging. Cars like Soul and E-Niro reach more than 50 KW at least, so they are better than before.

Have a 38kw, charge from home. Charging speed has never been an issue. Have done longer journeys, 200 miles plus and 20 mins public charging time is typical. Unless you regularly do 300+ mile journeys this is easily the best affordable EV. It’s efficiency is unbeatable particularly in winter (heat pump is standard) and at high speed. Regeneration paddles are brilliant.

@@bjornnyland If you wish to be that pedantic it is 38.3 kWh. However my point was that the need for a higher charging speed is not that important if you home charge or unless you regularly do 300 + mile trips. Also in the UK specifically, outside the south east, the 150kW charging network is very bad. We regularly travel from the west Scottish Borders to East Sussex and it would not be possible in an EV using just 150kW chargers, we would have to use 50kW, even in a long range EV like a Kia e-Niro, or buy a Tesla of course. Wish UK ultra rapid charging network was a good as Norway.

From 75% up the charging speedwell decrease and at 85% the charging speed will have dropped to 22 kW." In California, most fast chargers only offer 50 KW anyway. So the inability to charge at 60 KW is not a big deal. On the other hand, there are plenty of driving trips that can be done more comfortably with a 170 mile range instead of a 120 mile range. With that said, Hyundai has not shown any real interest in selling EVs in California. The dealerships mark up their EVs $7000-$10000 over MSRP, making them vastly more expensive than their ICE counterparts. I hope that will change but at the moment the Ioniq EV is just not affordable compared to buying the Bolt EV.

I partially agree, but used prices on these are quite high. You ask what is the point. Well it can be getting a decently sized car with best in class efficiency. We know Hyundai is cautious with their range and battery utilization. Always struck me as a pure battery upgrade this anyways. Kona is more expensive so not really comparable, but I do agree it has a better value. Leaf is the more reasonable comparison, and even though it offers longer range it is smaller with less efficient technology evening it out a bit.

10-90% of 38kWh charges about 30kWh. Charging 30kWh in 1 hour means an average charge rate of 30kW. That just seems wrong. Like an outlier measurement.

the new 38 kWh Ioniq even if in DC it only charges up to 50 kW it can charge 28 kWh in 40 minutes with which at 110 km / h about 200 km are done on the highway. The old Ioniq charged 28 kWh in 33 minutes but charging at 70 kW costs more than charging at 50 DC for 7 more minutes is not worth it ... better to have a car that has 10 kWh more and makes more road in one charge for less charging and take breaks for only 7-10 minutes more.

Thanks for this review. Obviously, the newer Ionic is not worth it vs the older model. Even though older model had less range, charging time was faster and I think, to me, that is way better than some of the newer features and improved range. But that's my opinion.

IT depends, i own the new Ioniq and only charge AC which is faster then the old Ioniq 6.6 VS 7.2kwh. i only charge at home or at my job. I agree that if u use to fast charge mostly to not get the new Ioniq. But for ac charging it's very good.

99.5% of my journeys are within the range that the new model gives me. 90% of my journeys would be in the range of the old model. The old model isn’t available to lease.......the new one is. Simple maths.

If ABRP is correct, the old one is faster. Difference depends on the chargers available on the actual route.

157km on a windy and rainy day...doesn't sound as good as it should've been. How much does it actually weight, tho? The old one was about 1420kg, i expect this one to be around 1550 at least.

@@bluebikerathar the old gen Leaf might suffer cold/heat, dunno about the new one. The Golf? Is it any good efficiency wise? Anyhow, i bet the Kona or the i3 might be winner out of the pack.

It's a shame really. This only confirms to me that this car is more a step backwards than forwards. It's not worth the upgrade especially not from a fully loaded classic one. The classic 28 kWh Ioniq was and is a great car and well worthwhile to hang on to it for another little while. I think, this version of the Ioniq will flop and wouldn't be surprised to see a bigger battery version being offered by Hyundai within the next 12 months.

I don't think canIoniq supports the 38kWh Ioniq. I'd expect the car to behave more like a Kona with regard to OBD communication, which is significantly different than that of the old Ioniq. You might want to try EVNotify in Kona mode when you get the chance.
