Just coming up to 20,000 miles on my April 2022 Ultimate AWD. I can’t say that I wouldn’t like longer range but, providing I stick to speed limits, 260 miles in summer and 220 in winter is the norm unless temperatures are well below freezing. Recently we saw -10degC in Argyll and poor old Beefheart only managed 190 miles from full with 5 miles left. Battery conditioning is the game changer. A recent update has made 20 minute charging stops possible in cold weather and that makes all the difference. 365 mile trips to the Midlands require only two stops, the first of 18 minutes at Gretna (when it’s available, roll on Carlisle) and 10 minutes at Stafford. Without the battery update those stops were more than twice as long. Take a little longer at Burton in Kendall in summer and its possible with one stop. The simple fact is that the incredible performance of EV’s is rarely used because it hurts range so much. Once having demonstrated face-bending acceleration to their friends most EV drivers drive relatively sedately to eke out range. Why therefore buy a Taycan when an Ioniq 5 is as quiet, at least as comfortable and certainly roomier, easier to park, charges as quickly, has similar range even in AWD trim and is half the price? Beefheart is safe as milk.

Just did a similar trip down to Manchester we did a quick 15 min top up at Gretna Green but we swung by Ionity in Blackburn to top up so we can use the car while visiting, it was great had 6 stalls and quiet as it was off the main M6. Gretna Green is getting way to busy can’t wait till they finish building the new Ionity in Carlisle it'll help relieve the strain at Gretna

@@LemonTeaLeaf The queue at Gretna was 12 cars long on the 27th Dec. I went to the Pulse at Smiths Hotel but that was only delivering 12kWh. After 16kW drawn I had to leave or be charged the overstay fine. I abandoned the trip and limped back to Polmadie. I’ve used my Discovery for trips south since then but often check the Gretna chargers via the app. I’ve yet to see them anything other than fully occupied, even at 5am. Stafford is getting very busy too. One of the problems is that slow charging cars are using chargers that are capable of delivering four times the speed. Whilst an Ioniq can charge in 20 minutes it is often waiting behind a car that needs an hour or more, and there might be an unoccupied fast charger that would charge that car at the same rate and often at lower cost. I don’t mean to deny anyone the use of any charger, but better organisation on the part of operators could help to connect cars to the appropriate charger and make better use of the network.

Great video, thanks. Why have 0-60 in 5 secs when you’re forced to stop 25 miles from home? The focus on speed runs is, in general, masking the conversation on efficiency and range, so this type of comparison is absolutely worthwhile.

Great video I was waiting for something like this, i bought a RWD 73kw a month ago and this video confirms that it's the right car for me living in the southeast, Kent. Hi Wayne Goss, not had an issue yet but in Scotland we've not had much rain. But the couple of times I was out in the when it was raining I didn't have to much issue as you can use the rear parking camera even at 70mph!?!? although sometimes you get rain spots that obscure the display. It's OK if it's just wet with rain, but if it's dirty as well, it's almost opaque. I coated the window in Angelwax H2GO a couple of weeks ago and, having just driven back from Lossiemouth to central Scotland with a dirty window, visibility was bad, and then when it rained it got worse, and then in the dark, well... I had to use the wing mirrors as the view out of the back window was zero. The reversing camera was too wet to be any use, too. So - a real flaw. Still love the car, but, it really needs a wiper.

The 20" are much wider and have a performance tyre on them (Pilot Sport) whereas the 19" have a minimum rolling resistance tyre and are narrower. Hyundai engineers also confirmed that the 19" is optimized for economy and the 20" for performance.

I shouldn't really compare the Ioniq 5 with my 38kWh Ioniq because they are not the same class of car at all, but I can't help but be a bit disappointed with the efficiency reports I've seen from the Ioniq 5. Even taking into account its bigger size it seems very thirsty at motorway speeds.
@bradconnor1970
@bradconnor1970 2 жыл бұрын
I guess the bottom line is that, yes, if efficiency is your ultimate aim, you'll probably look elsewhere. There's no doubt that Hyundai have made some form over function decisions, and the car is not aerodynamic - lots of frontal area, snub rear, etc. - but it's essentially a styled SUV, not a family hatch, and if you were going to buy an ICE SUV for the space etc. then you'd already be ignoring the cost of pushing a brick-shaped object through the atmosphere. Take a look at the Rivian - their solution to get some (any!) range out of their E-SUV is to simply lob a mahoosive battery in it. With current battery technology we're always going to fighting a balance between range, performance/weight and style and, whilst I would have loved an extra 20-30 miles of range (those two extra battery slots, Hyundai!), I daresay that every EV owner in the world would say that, regardless of model. For my money the IONIQ gives me sufficient range between 20-80% charges to be acceptable, and (when chargers are available) has the tech to make those pitstops (say 2.5 hours on the motorway) short and snappy. Nearly the same range as the best of the current non-Tesla crop (e-Niros and Konas, say) but in a bigger car that does cost a bit more to run. It's a fair balance to me, and suits my lifestyle. Until we get the next gen of battery tech, the question is always going to be "is it good enough for ME?" - and I said yes!

You have to take into consideration you were running the RWD on 19s and AWD on 20s. The wheel size makes a big difference. You should do a test with yours on some 18s, get them off a Kona. The best option for UK climate especially in the south is the RWD with two sets of wheels. 20s on summer tyres and 18s on All Season. Thanks for this presentation, BUT, i do not really agree that the efficiency of the RWD makes it an economical choice vs the AWD. Make the calculation for 20 000 km, the difference is not huge. I don’t think we should measure the consumption of electricity like we measure gas consumption. The important point is the recharge time, because often we pay for the number of minutes we charge instead of the quantity of electricity. We should also not forget the advantage of an AWD. Thanks again for your nice video….
@LemonTeaLeaf
@LemonTeaLeaf 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Claude, that's a good point in the UK we don't pay per minute like France and other EU countries and we pay for what we use. Agree the recharge time is more important in these cases. It's more for people who charge at home and want to save some money over the AWD and a little more saving in consumption. Thanks for your input as I forgot some places abroad charge per min. 👍

It’s sort of a 3 fold thing though Claude. It’s more efficient so it costs less to recharge at home where the majority of charging is done. If it’s 25% less efficient then that’s 25% more cost for the AWD version. It also has a longer range which means fewer stops on long journeys. This also means in a time based charging system your spending less time at the charger to cover the same amount of kilometres. And finally the up front cost is smaller. So there’s the opportunity cost of the extra capital or the additional monthly cost. It’s not insignificant. It probably depends entirely on your financial position.

What's the weight distribution on the rwd? Any good in the snow?

This is fascinating. Everything I have read is that when cruising at high speeds, unless you floor the accelerator to overtake another car, it should be running on just the RWD motor and the second motor in Eco mode would be in neutral. So is this just the extra weight of having a second motor on board? If I interpreted your video correctly RWD is about 25% more efficient which is much higher than I would have thought.

depending how you get up to speed the AWD can still kick in even in eco, I found it uses it a bit more than usual when going up an incline. I'm actually surprise at the efficiency of the RWD. the AWD can be all to easy to accelerate up to speed.

If it was me living in Brighton I would get it to help efficiency over the winter months and to help preheat the battery when charging to have it as optimal as possible. Dont look at it from a financial point of view if you like efficiency and want the benefits of the heat pump then go for it. if you're not bothered about saving on fuel bills or unless you keep the car for a long time you could do without one. This will help explain how the heat pump works from hyundai kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5PIl6RrrqeVrK8 I've compared our Kona EV with a heat pump to a friends without over winter as an example: (around 5°c) Kona electric winter range with heat pump 220 miles Kona electric winter range without heat pump 170 miles

Another interesting video. In coming up to three weeks ownership of a RWD 73kw and having driven just 500 miles, my accumulated economy figure is 3.6kw. My locale is mostly windey, hilly country roads with some fast dual carriageway. I mostly drive on normal with level 3 regen. I’m not driving like Lewis Hamilton, but not trying to economise either. I can totally see the appeal of a limited edition P45, but wouldn’t spend the extra on an unlimited Ultimate AWD. It’s hard to drive fast in current law, you can’t really take the i5 off road, and around here when it snows it gets 1 metre deep on the roads, so you’d be ploughing through it in your £45k car. In my old Freelander you could ride above the snow level somewhat.

Excellent video: I ordered the RWD in August and will pick it up in late October. I decided to buy the car by putting down a deposit and pay the rest in instalments over two years. A friend is getting a used Tesla Model 3 Performance on lease and it will arrive in January, he had opted for the Standard but it was cancelled earlier this week, so the company are giving him the Performance at the same price, £500 a month for two years. He’s had an EV charger fitted for free by the company whereas I’ve paid £800 after the grant! Have I made the wrong decision to buy the car rather than lease as EV technology and cars will improve in the next few years?

I also bought the car with cash and loans it actually worked out cheaper than going with dealer finance. I don't think it's a bad thing to buy out an EV I still think (especially the i5) it'll still be sought after in 3-5 years time if you hold on to it that long and with everyone moving to electric we're the generation that will help boost the second hand market in the future.

The ioniq5 is a lot more car, and was never going to be as efficient as the kona, but a lower drag coefficient may have mitigated a bit. 70 mph is 112 km/h. 1 mile = 1609 meters. And btw, the difference RWD-AWD is not that big. The front motor is NOT mechanically engaged when running at normal driving mode, so only the weight (260lbs, 120 kg) is impacting. On flat roads = no impact at all. Wet roads and wind act as more of an impact on consumption.

Thanks for good videos! Here in Denmark we don't have the option to try the AWD at the dealer. They only have the RWD models. Some videos from Denmark says, that the RWD has much better drive performance then the AWD because of the extra weight in front, because of the extra motor. Each model has a built in “efficiency” speed and 70 mph is NOT an efficient speed for all models. 65 mph I get 3.7. to 3.9 miles per kWh. If 5 more miles per hour is CRITICAL consider that 1 more mile per kw means 70 more miles of range. RWD Ioniq 5.
