Hold on hold on..something you failed to mention: the EV6 GT-Line is £10k cheaper than the Model Y (which has no cheaper option in the UK). Many people would be happy with that mid spec car as it still comes with a lot of tech. In which case that must surely swing the balance towards the EV6.
@sokoo19783 жыл бұрын
You can have a cheaper EV6, but in fact if you look at the trims, you don't really want. I'm hesitating between the two and with the configuration I like (GT line full extra) the price difference is dimnishing while Tesla has still many advantages against it like the better efficiency, the much, I mean MUCH bigger trunk and frunk (the 4wd EV6 frunks size is a joke), the light years better software and the SC network. There are few points towards EV6, like for me it looks way better and cooler, and the insurance is much cheaper. But in the other hand KIA requires ridiculous service intervals, while Tesla does not requires any, and it also holds it's value very well. So the total cost of ownership on long term might be even better for Tesla.

A year ago I was adament we were going to get a Y and nothing else would compare. This year the Supercharger network is not as important, for our long journeys, as faster rapids are available and hubs are coming along nicely. With that one change and the emergence of competition from Kia and Hyundai it was an easy decision to go for something else. We settled on the Ioniq 5 with the Ev6 a close call. Viewing it as competition is a mistake. Tesla's mission is to accelerate the worlds transition to sustainable energy. This is why they have open sourced all their patents. Rapid innovation and the output of a quality product is one area where Tesla continues to differentiates itself. Unfortunately, for other automakers, they are too far ahead and have reached economies of scale. 2021-2023 will be this last gasp for a lot of automakers, as the gov steps in and attempts to help them thrive. But they just won't be able to make money. In fact, ford and others are losing about 10,000 per EV sale right now, while Tesla boasts a ridiculous gross margin. I sure hope there are viable options for the consumer, but does there really need to be? When you think about what phone you use it's either a iPhone or an Android..

Legacy car manufacturers know how to build cars, and now they no longer have to invest in developing drivetrains and emissions and stuff. It will make them much more competitive in general and able to focus on more important things. Tesla's appeal is rapidly decreasing as they lose their monopoly in the ev market. Not to mention that they still look like they where launched 2008. Which i guess they technically where. But i do agree with you in a sense. Once self driving cars become a thing the car industry days are numbered and only a handful of fleetcar builders will remain. Cheap taxi's will flood the market and be available 24/7 everywhere. This assumes that Tesla keep their edge. Based on the low R&D spend of major auto groups vs Tesla, I think it will be very hard to catch them, especially in the driver assist systems.

I know the build quality and warranty are fantastic on both the EV6 and Ioniq5, I recently had to spend 4 hours in the back of a Model S, good god the seats were awful, like going back 20yrs in time. Also the build quality wasn't great for a car that costs more. Large panel gaps, scratchy plastics, it just felt cheap in the backseats. Not what I had expected from a £70k car. How does the Model Y compare?
@Soh903 жыл бұрын
The S,X, and 3 were built during the infancy of Tesla and some (not all) had issues with panel gaps. My Model Y (2021 model) was flawless when it was delivered. And I heard that most 2021 and beyond vehicles have been vastly improved. As far as interior goes, I have zero complaints. There are soft touch materials even in the 3rd row and everything is put together nicely. Some of the classic Tesla gripes are still there (like the rear head restraints squeaking when raised) but I haven’t had any other issues. A quick note on exterior panel gaps. Aside from the uber luxurious brands of the world, no car has perfect build quality, and you will find vehicles with panel gaps inconsistencies in every brand from Acura to Volvo. What I'm gathering from various reviews some of the drawbacks are: Tesla: Poor quality control. Lots of owners finding trimming peeling off, pieces not quite aligned right, etc. Plus I'm not a fan of its design inside and out. I5: The rear window has no visibility during bad weather. Its shape prevents dirt and rain from being blown off. EV6: Also has the rear visibility issue though I'm guessing less so than the I5 (I haven't found many reviewers' takes on it). It also is very dark inside - I'd prefer to spend hours of driving in surroundings which lift my mood.

@@nealm1814 Actually, I do. God forbid that anyone might live in a different country! I also often go from my home in Catalunya to my parents' home near Cambridge, and guess what? There is one single supercharger on my route between Perpignan and Rouen. So, in order for your superchargers to be a selling point for me, I'd either have to go quite a long way out of my way from my normal route or take another route. I happen to like my route, it takes in some of the best scenery in France. Apart from that, there is the well reported point that Tesla is almost certainly going to open up its Superchargers to all users and t5he fact that other networks are now rapidly catching up. Apart from that, I expect that I will do most of my charging at home. There aren't that many people who actually need to do over 350km in a day.
@seanacurrie3 жыл бұрын
@@nealm1814 I do not, but that is not the point I was making. I was suggesting that to put a lot of weight on the Supercharger Network is interesting when so little charging actually takes place at public charging points. To quote an article from Transport Environment Despite the perception that public recharging is a major barrier to the mass uptake of electric vehicles (EV), public chargers are only used for about 5% of charging events, including on-street city charging, car parks and fast charging along road corridors. The data compiled in various studies to date shows that the vast majority of EV charging happens at home or work and it is a lack of choice and availability of electric cars that is the principal barrier. Yes I understand that for those who have to use public chargers on a daily/weekly basis that the Supercharger Network is far superior, but Gridserve are certainly improving matters, as are Shell and BP judging by recent changes to Petrol Stations near me. So to use the Superchargers as one of the key criteria for putting the Tesla ahead of the EV6/Ioniq 5, yet ignore the price, looks, warranty etc. seems to me a little subjective.

It would help if you reported the price "from" for the Non Tesla cars as the correct values rather than for the most expensive model in the range - especially as neither of you were driving them - Tom even said he was driving the RWD car - the price you showed was for the AWD Ultimate, Tom I believe was in the RWD premium (no sunroof). The cheapest EV6 RWD is £40,945 so 10K less than you state ( I think you were in a GT-Line S RWD (49K)- so 328 miles range vs 315 for the Tesla) & for the ioniq it's £36.995 - so being pedantic the tesla at £54K (for AWD plus £1.1K for the white seats to brighten the interior) is 20-25% more - for a bigger very slightly longer range (with supercharger) AWD car. They were clearly comparing equivalent models of each car and the price and information explicitly made this clear. They obviously only had the RWD Ionic but that was made clear also as well as that they were making a comparison to the AWD version. The EV6 was the AWD GTS. However, I do agree the pricing could have been made more obvious - even with a fully loaded EV6 (£53500 for the version I am getting with Blue colour and heat pump), an equivalent Y is much more (£63690 when priced with the same sized wheels, blue colour, white interior and extended autopilot (haven't added the full self drive option as not equivalent)). They could also have given some information on stats - the Y is only 0.4s faster to 60 (4.8 vs 5.2 although tesla tends to overestimate and ev6 has been clocked at 4.8 in some reviews) and the range is only about 14 miles less. For practicality - if you need the space (and like the overly minimal interior) - the Y wins hands down, but for anyone else the ev6 is much better value (or the Ioniq if you like the looks and want the more relaxed experience). Also the Y seems more of a genuine small SUV with a high driving position, where the ev6 is a genuine crossover - slightly raided fastback. Thankfully I think a lot of EV buyers at the moment are still the type of people that do their research.

I bought a model 3 SR+ as we don’t travel long distances often, the supercharger network helps for stopping a little more often, and the £8k premium for the LR wasn’t something I could justify. Same for the Y but in a more competitive space. Superchargers are still a big factor but hopefully Gridserve/others are improving constantly (Cornwall still a bit of a black hole). The price differences here really make you stop and think how often you really need a charge on a long trip. On the base cars you’re looking at £10-15k difference and at that point they’re really in different classes. But option up the EV6/I5 to a reasonable level and its maybe more like £5-10k. Still a big jump and those cars will get you 300 miles of range which will help you bridge gaps in the charger network. If I was in the market for a more CUV/SUV I don’t think Tesla would be my first choice but would still be on my shortlist. And the supercharger network would be the only thing putting it there right now.

The Ionic 5 looks like you could put numbers on the doors & turn up at a WRC stage. My only problem is the Proton Jumbuck paint job. It would be nice in black or silver though. If you feel the need to respond, remember, opinions are like noses - we all have one 😆

I was concerned about the EV6's back end/lights from initial photos but it has really grown on me and in person it looks so much better. The front bonnet swells and rear haunches are really nice in person as well.

EV6 and Ioniq 5 are also a lot cheaper than the Y. Especially if you go for RWD versions.

"But I don't think you can really say that the EV 6 resembles anything else can you? It's pretty different to look at, kind of coupe crossed with an SUV" - Look at an i-Pace and an EV both side on, they look nearly identical. I think they both look great by the way

Always a semi-tease watching these great reviews from here in California - we've had the Y for years but still waiting on both the I5 and EV6's releases. I'm still holding out to make a purchase (and honestly, the fantasy of the Macan EV too), but it's true that there are quite different pros/cons that each of us needs to consider. Maybe if/when the Y adds air suspension that will help ease the Y's unforgiving ride (especially with 20" or 21" wheels) but I suppose if I keep waiting for these updates it'll be 2024 and I'll still be driving the old Volvo...

Ys are everywhere here, but we still don't have the I5 or the EV6. Y is OK, but ride is rougher than it should be for the type of car it is, especially over the winter-torn Canadian roads every spring. The I5 looks to be a better option for 'our' weather: -20C is something we get, and trying to work a semi-frozen screen with gloves isn't a great experience. The Y's trunk space is amazing, tho. The 7 seater version can really just barely seat kids in the back - there's barely any headroom.

Fantastic review, thank you. My personal choice is the EV6 after test driving all of them in Canada. Tesla, has a lot of manufacturing issues at least here in North America. For some reason the materials they use and the building of the car itself are non reliable. I have driven the Kia Soul EV for the last year and it is quite remarkable, even in the harsh Canadian winters. Kudos to KIA.

What I find interesting in new cars, especially Tesla is the huge touchscreen and that the German courts have ruled that said using the touchscreen is just the same as using a mobile phone which comes with fines.

I think all 3 are great cars. Hard to go wrong whatever you pick. Different style and different advantages. I was thinking which one of the 3 to wait for like 3 months ago... In the end I decided I do not need the extra size of either one and went for a model 3 sr+ and I am really happy :)

I agree with your point and Tesla has many advantages over the other two, but I would pick Ioniq 5 anyway mainly because of ventilated seats. I got used to it in my 1st gen Ioniq and want it in my next car too.

I looked at the Model Y before we bought our ID 4. Tesla still has build quality issues (a friend had 4 repairs in the first 3 months on hers) and they are EVERYWHERE in the Seattle area. As common as a Ford Fiesta in the UK. When it comes time to trade in our BMW i3 we will look at the Kia.

Went to a UK dealer launch of the Kia TODAY. (22/10) Conclusions. Looks better in the flesh. Silver is the colour (imo) Charge point in the right place (rear corner). Quality, fit, finish seems good, I'm 6'3".... I fit (just) but it's tight-ish. Ok once I'm in, but the openings are fairly small...... As is the boot. Sales staff say "they have negotiated to use the Supercharger network" (that'll be no) I think I knew more about charging and I don't drive an EV. Needs comparison with the others, I suspect both will have more room, which would be a winner.

No offense but the ID4 is nowhere near as good as any of these 3 cars.

@@raydoherty5419 No offense taken. The Hyundai & Kia are not out here yet so I cede to the knowledge of people who have experienced them. However I work for at a large tech company here in the Seattle area and Tesla's fill the campus garages. There is an internal group page where owners get together to discuss their latest problems and issues. I didn't want to spend $50,000 on a car that annoyed me every time I looked at it. To drive the Y may be more fun, to live with I'll keep my ID 4 thanks.

@@grahamgolding6102 I own two (model 3 long range and model Y performance) and they have both been flawless. I know some have issues but the IS4 seems to have its own issues with the software too. It’s a good car but I think it’s a step down from these three and it’s priced that way too.
@rubberroast15982 жыл бұрын
Kind of shortsighted not to take vast price differences into account. For example here in Canada, Tesla Y now goes for $77k base. ionic 5 preferred (the middle tier one), goes for $48k plus it qualifies for a further federal rebate of a further $5k markdown. Its not a fair comparison when one comes close to double the price of the other. Of course its going to have more space, power, and range.

Excellent review of the three automobiles. Looking forward to watching more reviews as the EV market matures. Would like to see a comparison how each performs on long road trips and not published spec’s. The charging infrastructure of the country could be a factor on which automobile would be the best fit.

I only wish Tom had compared the top-of-the-line Ioniq 5, as it does have a glass roof that makes it just as airy and open as the Y. And it even has an powered shade cover for it -which the Y lacks.

Another thing worth mentioning. According to Edmunds car depth reviews, almost all Tesla models over advertised their actual range, whereas other car makers under advertised the actual range. For example, Hyundai Kona EV is advertised with a range of 258 miles but ends up running more than 300 miles in their test.

Literally the only UK reviewer that calls the Model Y suspension 'comfortable" when everyone else is complaining about it - would love to know the views of the other presenters- did all 3 of you find it comfortable? Disappointed you fail to mention the Ioniq 5 base trim is £37k.(v £40k EV6 and £55k M3) Then...after using a more expensive version of the Koreans, failing to mention V2L and being able to use the car as mobile power source Overall, it felt you guys were overselling the Model Y and underselling the Korean cars. Maybe I'm wrong, but that was my takeaway. Incomplete review in my opinion.

Model Y Suspension really is bad. Way too sporty for such a big car. It's not comfortable at all to drive compared to the IONIQ 5. V2L was mentioned though @ 11:24 but not much info about what it is. They also forgot to mention that IONIQ 5 can move the rear bench forward to create more luggage space. And why did they show the frunk on the Tesla, but not on EV6 or IONIQ 5?! They also have storage in the front, even though it's less.

It is mostly a problem in the UK with the terrible roads, in Europe the roads a smooth and you don't get the same problem. So I think it will be a problem in the UK. Even the model 3, as a sports saloon, is a bit jittery for passengers (I have one), great car but just a little bit firm.

@@Tom55data In Norway and Sweden we have rougher asphalt to withstand the winter months. I've test driven both MY and IONIQ 5 on these roads and it's a huge difference in noise level. EV6 is not available yet for testing, but I can just assume it's closer to IONIQ 5 than Model Y. :/
