Best and most detailed review _by far_! All other reviewers returned their car in time, only you really pushed it, thank you for that, Bjorn. And what a mess with those so-called "fast chargers". Now that the cars with >50kW capability appear we see that the homework was not done - I thought you would start a rant but you kept surprisingly calm :-)

Maybe I missed it in the comments but it seems no-ones mentioned that this is an incredible car in terms of value for money, no other car can do over 250 miles per charge for this price. There will come a time around early 2020 when 1kWh of battery will break the $100 mark to make, (batteries are the most expensive part of EV's) that will the point when electric cars will cost the same or less than an equivelent ICE car, so for Hyundai to bring this out 18 months before that date is nothing short of a miracle!

Bjorn - great, well done! Pity that the 175 kW charger was out, but I expect by the time you are reading this, you will have got to try it already! I think the taper at 74% to ~35 kW is okay, not too bad at all compared to most EVs, although not as "late tapering" as the Ioniq. Sometimes the taper can be slightly different on different chargers, so interested to see what happens on the 175 kW. Even at 35 kW, your last 6% to 80% is only going to take 6:35 minutes. Looking forward to the 175 kW results. Also - impressive energy efficiency even at 120 kph, and more so at 90 kph. 189 Wh/km should give a 100% range of 339 km / 211 miles at 120kph/75 mph - that's really exceptional at this price point. Please advise about whether the 120 kph was true GPS measured or mainly a speedometer 120 kph - I think I saw your speedo at around 124 kph, but would be good to get your confirmation of this. Seems like the speedo is 4.5% exaggerated compared to GPS, not unusual these days, and not as "optimistic" as the 2018 Leaf. Thanks again Bjorn for being the best EV tester on the web!

The technical data looks very similar, but the Niro is bigger. We compared Kona and Niro on the Vienna Autoshow, and espacially on the backseats is more room in the Niro. Some rumors say, that the Niro has other batteries (NMC811 from SK Innovation) than the Kona an there will be a guarantie on them for the full lifetime of the car.
@clifglen7785
@clifglen7785 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, more space in back seats and boot area. The only down-side appears to be the absence of dash top HUD. A pity as HUD in Kona is great and not in the windscreen , which can be difficult to fix if you get a broken windscreen. Still not much ground clearance in both cars with battery packs so low. Niro is currently only FWD and Kona has AWD with turbo engine available in petrol. I wonder if full battery Niro will be RWD . ?

Long distance driving is typically done with the amount of energy you can quick charge in 30-60 minutes rather than the actual battery size. For that, Ioniq has 25kWh of energy for long distance driving and this car seems to have 40 at best. If you only keep only 40 minute breaks, Ioniq is probably faster...

Great video's ( part 1 and 2 ). And thanks you for making them! The only worried me is the space on the trunk( as i travel a lot) and the space on the back seat's. One more think also did not really liked. Was the battery distance between the road, Only 16cm. I live in Sweden and In the winter times my job destination roads, the are not cleaned from the snow. So sometimes the snow can be high. So im wondering how the car will perform there with the battery so down. :\ . And if i will destroyed the battery.(?) I have pre order the Tesla model 3, but im not sure if i can wait so long as i need a car soon( IF it will be available sooner than model 3, here in Sweden). I am between the Kona and model 3. But feelings is mixed now.

Thank you Bjorn for a detailed review! I keep myself pretty informed on the electric car market, and I've owned both a Leaf and Chevy Volt, but I think this is the most impressive electric car I've seen reviewed. It's got the perfect amount of range plus fast charging, and there's not an information overload with the displays. If you didn't have to pull a trailer or have frequent nimber tasks, do you still think you would choose a Model X or the Kona? Or is the supercharging network and extra space worth the money for the X?

Hi Andris. We have covered just over 7,000 miles and averaged 62 m.p.g. I calculate the m.p.g. between tank fuel tank top ups but the car indicator is pretty accurate. We test drove a Tesla model S, very nice but too big for our parking space. My wife thought the Ioniq seat more comfortable. Top Gear magazine have got a PHEV Ioniq on long term test at present as we night consider that next but it has less load space than the hybrid and is a lot heavier, approx. 100 kg. I think. Tesla Model 3 is bigger than Ioniq and maybe not so roomy inside, pricy and not so well equipped in the base trim but I'd love to try one. If I liked cross overs I'd consider the Kona EV.

N.B. Incidentally our mileage is about 70 % urban and fairly hilly. Longer journeys are 70 m.p.h mainly M'way up to 400 miles a day. Car is always minimum driver + one passenger.

Hi. Thank you a lot for your replay:) I got 2 cars converted to LPG at the moment but considering to sell one. One I`m keeping is Mitsubishi Grandis. Gives me about 300+ miles for about $50 or so (I live in the UK). Was looking at Ionic hybrid yesterday and will do a test drive on Friday. Also that dual clutch gearbox is a concern for me as the last about 70 000 miles without repairs if driven carefully. Would still like to convert it to LPG tho:) What`s your Motorway speed is on the average? Here in the UK its 70 mph.
@charlesholland-keen2222
@charlesholland-keen2222 5 жыл бұрын
We are in U.K. also. Not sure about longevity of dual clutch system but have had several cars that used them and no problems. We usually replace our cars every three years though. Cruising at 65 - 70 mph for 200 miles last week we averaged 76 m.p.g. with air con, lka and cruise control on.

Will the Kia Niro be this cars best competition?
@thelondonbroiler
@thelondonbroiler 6 жыл бұрын
It's essentially what the Pontiac Firebird and Chevy Camaro were to one another, only the interior and exterior were different, mechanically they were near identical. The Bolt/Ampera-e is the closest competitor. Something I've wondered, in the US, if you sell more than 200k EVs, the tax incentive is reduced and eventually goes away, but even though the Niro and Kona are essentially the same car, are they counted separately? I think yes. So what's stopping Tesla from forming..... Edison Electric Motor Co and selling the Model C (imaginary model 3 clone) if that's what it will take to keep the tax incentive?

@@bjornnyland Thanks for your reply, i'm still very new to EV driving. Here in the Netherlands the most common house connection is 3x 25A. What's the connection standard in Norway? 3x 35A?

The ability to reduce the charging speed (minimum, medium, maximum) is very useful if you charge at friends/family if the electric 'group' is not a dedicated 'group' - that way you protect it from overload. I even use it at home for the Niro PHEV.

Hi, Thank you very much for the video. Great!. And know the question you didn´t expect to read... It is possible to put a jack in this car?. The reparation kit for wheels will really helps you just in 60% of situations. and even if you find the stick in the tire probably you will sweat a lot to can fix it. I don´t really care buy a spare wheel with the jack and tools. In fact the car still have the space for that option. But the question is if the car allows the posibility of put the jack and change the wheel. My doubt is because of the battery. Thank you very much again for your work!!.

Is the Chevy Bolt available in Norway or the rest of Europe?

yeah my neighbor has one, but there's currently a stay on deliveries due to mass demand. Im currently one of 7000+ in Norway who have signed contracts for purchase of the Kona and I got the grey! Too bad Norway will be lucky to deliver 2000 this year and theres no line numbering yet so most likely a year+ wait for me,

I saw Kona at Starfield in Korea. Cons. 1. It looks better than the video (red one looks like Iron man) 2. Option and range is very nice for the price 3. LKAS include. (was very expensive option for Genesis g80) 4. Multi link rear suspension (whereas Ioniq is torsion beam) Pros. 1. Rear space is too small. 2. Rear View is Ugly. 3. Low positioned battery looks little dagerous 4. The rival is Tesla model 3.

If this is anything like the Prius, the instruments and lights are all 12 volt, running from a small 12 volt battery like a motorcycle. THAT gets drained, and then you can't start the car because the instruments and engine management system have not enough volts. The 'Motive' battery might be full, you still need to jump start the 12 volt battery to start up. And you will probably find that in the boot (Trunk, for those in the US :-).

The 12V battery is in the front in the Kona :) Probably because there is not that much heat like in a regular car.

I believe to have the keys open the windows it would need sensors to avoid guillotine fingers. The front window would have those sensors if the windows are automatic.
