Hydrogen, the most abundant element, but.... It is always attached to something else. It takes energy to separate it. It leaks constantly because how do you contain the smallest atom. It has the lowest energy density by volume. To keep it in a small container it must be super cooled and under high levels of pressure. It is a fools errand to pursue Hydrogen for vehicles. Heavy transportation sector ok maybe worth it but synethic fuels from 100% recycled carbon is probably better, but also an incredibly difficult problem to solve. It is a super awesome looking car. Ever since I first laid eyes on the N74, I've lusted after it. No other car except for the R34 Skyline has brought that level of desire out in me. Of course, the more I've learned about the car, the less attractive it has become. Not physically; it's still STUNNINGLY beautiful. But literally everything else about it has zero appeal to me. Which is fine, it's not a car designed with people like me in mind, as Bierman so rightly pointed out. And I don't blame Hyundai for wanting to do what they are planning on doing with this car. My hope is that in a few years, they will release a spiritual little sister to this car, that takes a lot of the aesthetic cues from this car, and puts them in to something built for enthusiasts, something accessible to the masses, or at least to those who want it. Until then, I'll tool around in my GR Corolla, and have a blast. And maybe one day I'll get that R34...

4:30 Hydrogen being the most abundant element in the universe is a completely moot point... the big question is whether we can cheaply get it. Splitting hydrogen from water takes a huge amount of energy and a hydrogen cloud in space is obviously not a feasible source either. It's indeed a source that won't run out, but that does not make it a feasible/safe/good option yet.

"there aren't many hydrogen power stations in the world" i myself am skeptical of hydrogen but that's a bad argument considering the same can be said for electric or even gasoline power stations when they first started out
@kooooons5 ай бұрын
Better arguments are: hydrogen fuel stations are incredibly expensive compared to even the first EV charging stations. So called 'green' and 'blue' hydrogen are still rare amongst the rest of the hydrogen. And the entirety of hydrogen is also rare. It's also quite costly while 'green' electricity was already on the rise and relatively cheap 10 years ago. But the best part is: to power an entire car centric country's car fleet like Germany's, there's a need for 150 TWh of electricity. To power the same number of hydrogen cars, you'd need at least 450 TWh. Oh and then there's the thing where green hydrogen (and all e-fuels) can reduce more carbon emissions if it replaces fossil fuels used in certain industry processes than if it was used in cars. And all worldwide existing and planned production facilities could barely cover these industrial needs of only one country: Germany. Which makes using them in cars less climate friendly than sticking to petrol. So the most climate friendly car remains the EV.
@ghepardogts5 ай бұрын
@@kooooonsthe idea is to use unused energy in the electric grid that gets dispersed into nature and store it into hydrogen. Imagine over a century of power generation and excess energy just gone into thin air. Capturing that would power a huge portion of hydrogen production. I don't think Biermann can really say anything about what is right or not for car enthusiasts. Sure, he made M cars and now N cars. But he's stuck on combustion engines. And where that leads to can be seen with BMW today. The electeic vehicles that they have to make are way too expensive and way too ugly for anyone to buy, except a few companies that use them as tax breaks.

But then, why would somebody ever buy a mid engined sports car in the same realm as a model 3? Because they don't start picking their nose after challenging the local BMW m5 competition to a drag race. I assume being in this can only feel somewhat comparable to an astronaut, what with having hydrogen fuel and blistering speed in common with a space shuttle.
@alveolate5 ай бұрын
from the green tech / EV videos i've watched on yt, hydrogen doesn't seem like a good alternative, even if the tech is proven and clean. the infrastructure required is just very expensive, to store hydrogen you need to cool it down and liquefy it, which itself is a rather energy intensive process. liquefied hydrogen then requires heavy duty insulation, extremely low tolerances in its seals (hydrogen will sublimate and escape through most "solids" because the H2 molecule is just so tiny), and has to maintain some level of pressure (to keep the H2 liquid for longer). this means that H2 prep, storage, and pumping infrastructure all require a lot more tech and gets real pricey. at the same time, there is a pretty sizeable risk to having pressurised H2 tanks being on the road. while it's nice that the korean govt is investing in green tech and infrastructure... it's arguable whether hydrogen economy is really the most cost-effective investment.

It's kinda funny, that it's supposed to have a 62 kWh battery. That is 50% bigger than the one in my EV. The n74 Range is supposed to be 600 km in WLTP. Considering that 62 kWh could probably give you 400-450 km of WLTP, hydrogen only adds 150-200 km. And did everyone notice how much room the tanks and fuel cell tech takes up in the cutaway image? Honestly, why even bother with H2?
