Extreme 2021 Santa Fe clutch-slipping, heat loading reverse torture test for Hyundai’s new eight-speed dual clutch transmission, in the driveway from hell. Yesssssssssssssss!

In this report I thrash Hyundai's new 8sp DCT in the diesel 2021 Santa Fe for 12 rounds up the driveway from hell (tight, twisty and 5m ascent for 20-ish metres of lineal concrete).
This is an example of a worst-case scenario for a transmission like this - times 12.
Hyunda-Kia’s latest eight-speed DCT, by comparison, is a wet clutch system (meaning, the clutches operate in an oil bath) - and the oil is fed into an external convective cooler to manage overheating.
This is a completely separate oil system - as in, the oil that cools the clutches is separate from the oil that lubricates the gears.
Clutch durability is really simple to understand - all you need to know is that heat kills clutches. We’re about to put that to the test. Quite a severe one.
I want to see for myself (and show you) whether or not I can induce a near-death heat experience in the Santa Fe diesel dual clutch, by doing some severe real-world reversing.
And if it does go poopy in its trousers I’ll be reporting that, and doubtless there will be a terse telephone call with Hyundai, the temperature of which will be somewhat less than the clutch pack.
If nothing else, you know how I always say: ‘Never buy a demonstrator.’? Yeah. Well, this would be one reason why. (Actually, it should be fine. I’m told the transmission has inbuilt thermal overload protection, but let’s find out anyway.)
it strikes me that some of you really like the idea of buying a Santa Fe diesel (or its under-the-skin twin, the Kia Sorento diesel, which shares exactly the same powertrain) but some of you are somehow disinclined to buy a vehicle with a dual-clutch transmission - so scary - mainly thanks to Ford’s terrifying efforts, with its horrific ‘PowerShift’ dual-clutch transmission, and its appalling reliability.
Let's try and get a definitive result on heavy load endurance and duty cycle tolerance for this transmission.

I'm impressed. I have the 2017 USA version of the dry DCT in my Tucson and it hasn't given me any issues with low speed uphill driving. I also like to manually shift it under heavy gas pedal load while having fun with the car. I am savvy as to the limitations of a DCT. The main thing that I try to do is to give a second of time for the clutch to engage while starting from a stop. I am considering trading for a 2022 with the wet DCT. Well done Hyundai/Kia

Yay, John :) You kinda answered a comment I had put in, on a previous DCT show, re: reversing, uphill, with trailer. 5 in 20 is steep enough. Ok, you did clarify, that trailer reverse wasn't feasible on this driveway. You could've shown trans temp measurement before & after test? What temp would activate the warning? To get really into it - A trans oil sample, lab report, before & after test? Remember to replenish the 100 ml, each time :) As you said, even a manual trans would require some clutch slipping, in this case? This test shows the advantage of electric motors' full torque from zero revs? Bearing in mind, that motor windings can also heat up, under prolonged, high torque/ low rpm? & also have a thermal overload cut-out? If your driveway were to be straight-line, the slope would be steeper? You could use an electric winch at the top? To haul a vehicle up, trailer or not, trans in neutral? (It would need a full-wind cut-off?) :)

I see the hybrid version is coming out soon (at least here in NZ where both Hyundai and Kia have announced the upcoming release of hybrid versions of Santa Fe and Sorento). I'm assuming they will also be DCTs (like the ioniq and Niro), but they have a really good trick to reduce clutch wear, they simply fully engage the clutch and let the electric motor do the driving with it producing it's maximum torque from 0 rpm.

John, one thing we noticed during this experiment is that you look down at the shift-buttons every time you change from D to R or R to D! Will be very interested in how you got on with the push-button system in lieu of a conventional (Grab and go, without looking down) T-Bar or even a good rotary-shifter. During a 3(or more) point turn on a somewhat busy street, I'd much rather keep my chin up and my eyes on the road. Maybe one more point to the Sorento??

It’s good to see that this DCT has been well engineered. Unfortunately it still suffers from not being able to crawl in traffic, you need to modify your driving style to stop start. That I’m afraid rules this gearbox out for me... I don’t want to modify my driving style to minimise clutch wear.

When I read the title, I thought hammering round a race track and then a bit off-roading. Then you said dual clutch transmission and I then had visions of slow reverse manoeuvring up a hill, pushing a trailer. Well I got half of it. An actual automatic no problem. But for a DCT, such driving usually a recipe for having to ring the local garage or recovery truck.

Guys, a question about driving in a heavy traffic, like traffic jam with dual clutch gearbox (DCT/DSG, etc.) - does it make sense to switch to manual mode, to avoid constant switching from 1st gear to 2nd right after start rolling? These gearboxes try to change gear as quick as possible, so it look like - start, 1st, 2nd, stop, start, 1st, 2nd, stop, etc. I've read that clutch may slip when you slowly drive on the 2nd gear too. So switching to manual, to keep the car permanenly on the 1st when the speed is low, should also save the clutches. What do you think?

What happens if you put one foot on the brake, and another on the accelerator? Does the vehicle know if there's enough braking pressure to hold the vehicle at a stop, so it chooses to modify the throttle position such that it holds the engine at a specific RPM range whilst holding the clutch stack in the open position? -- The General Motors LS3 drive-by-wire has a neat feature where it can add a certain amount of throttle (15% I think) in order to prevent a stall event if the vehicle is below the roll speed at idle. There's some sort of other programming where it will permit a stall event if the PCM adds throttle position for a given amount of time.

I have to say that I agree with your views about reversing in rather than reversing out. This is a safety issue. I even say this about car parks. My wife was in a wheel chair for about 6 months and frankly, the most dangerous place for her was the shopping centre carpark, because drivers reversing out do not have the vision of a driver driving forward. Also, as far as I am aware, every child who has been run over by a reversing vehicle, was run over by a vehicle reversing out. I have never heard of this about a vehicle reversing in. I used to service computers on customer sites and I did not enjoy paring in Wagga Wagga because of their nose to the curb parking, because reversing out, I was reversing into a big blind spot in my blind van. Tamworth with their rear to the curb parking I found to be far less stressful and much safer.

The clutches and gearbox both packed up in the Golf, and VW wanted $10,500 fix it. I politely told them to fuck off, and traded it in. While the Ford isn’t quite as refined as the VW, it’s certainly more reliable than the golf that I had. @autoexpert JC, this is not clutch related, but the Santa Fe is a big unit, as are other big SUV's / 4WD's. Their ever increasing numbers in shopping centre car parks present an issue for the driver of your standard passenger vehicle. When reversing out of your parking spot, the large SUV/4WD parked next to you can present a very dangerous issue, rear cross traffic (more often than not driving at speeds well above the 5 km/hr). Gladly, more cars are coming with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) with auto braking. With new cars now coming with a reversing camera. How difficult would it be to engineer a system where you have an additional camera on each side of the rear bumper, and when you put the car in reverse, a panoramic 180 degree+ view of what's behind you appears on the infotainment screen (or similar)? It may already be available on some models. Just curious..

Any car can only crawl up the hill in first gear, most automatics try in second but eventually downshift, but the new Volkswagen we got with the DSG transmission stays in second gears and most likely slips the clutch all the time. I don't know where it comes from but after I can smell something similar to plastic or glue. Maybe it's something else, I'm not sure and the car is not broken in yet

Not all conventional A/T are the same. Peugeot 3008 AMN8 immediately starts to engine-brake once I depress a brake pedal while driving down hill. After that I may release the brake pedal, but the car maintains speed at the same level.

Hey John my 2014 fiesta with the dreaded DCT has been fine since I've owned it. And still going fine. Just treated it like a manual in regards to not letting it crawl in traffic etc. Guessing getting them hot cooks the seal leading to the oil leakage onto the clutch packs. Have also heard ( from a Ford tech apparently) that the failures all mostly were related to people who babied them all the time. Especially from new. ie not putting the foot down often enough. And that a lot of the failures were due to clutch material balling up on the clutch packs. Whereas if driven hard often enough it kept this clear. Anyway I tried to find any data on the percentage of failures of these dammed things and couldn't find much. Any one know more about the failure rates?

A conventional Auto Transmission would do these laps with ease even on a very hot day. This may be an accomplishment for a Dual Clutch Transmission but why would you want one when a conventional Auto will last longer and never have these slow driving issues. Dual clutch Trans are NOT worth the risk.

Out of interest, if the invite materialised would you consider or reject outright?

I have the 2017 i30 premium Diesel. Hyundai had to replace the DCT. As it was having issues, not from the KMs 50,000 or my driving. It was just started doing weird stuff. It was like it had a fuel or timing issues. It’s running perfect with no issues. So I’m now looking to replace the car with a Santa FE or Sorrento. we intended on doing some long trips around Australia. Do you recommend one over the other.

I ride a dirt bike and the clutch is used as a way to modulate the engine power (much more responsive than throttle). We ride up very steep hills with the engine at full throttle and slipping the clutch for very extended periods of time and so far I have never had to change a worn out clutch. If I was doing this to an auto transmission with a cooler I am sure it wouldn'tget half way up the hill before it overheats. Think driving an auto in second gear up your driveway for 2km. So this means a properly designed clutch will have no problem. The clutches on dirt bikes are all wet clutches.

I would say that if you could smell an oil bath clutch it is well past the time for a tow truck.. You mentioned that a characteristic of the car is it holds speed on a downhill run far better than the Automatic version. Does it apply the brakes autonomously or is the speed hold a result of a lower gear selection done autonomously? For example a manual with to higher gear selected wont have enough engine braking to hold a desired speed. Are the clutches directly operated by hydraulics with an electric proportional valve or run electrically via a magnetic coil with a controlled magnetic field?
@AutoExpertJC
@AutoExpertJC 3 жыл бұрын
Nevertheless if you overheated it you would smell it. The car remained in the same gear to retain the speed.

That is fantastic, when I was selling Hyundai's around six years ago there was a problem with the duel clutch transmission in normal driving as it would overheat due to the gearbox not dropping into first at standstill (you were basically riding the clutch all the time) to overcome this you had to manually click into first gear even though the car told you it was in first. I don't remember any problems reversing up the hill. My Alfa however was brilliant in normal driving conditions but but just don't try to do what you just did you would have to rev the shit out of it until the clutch engaged and then it would shoot out in the most terrifying way it was as if the car literally wanted to kill you for you wanting to make it drive backwards up a hill. I did notice that after my last service software update the problem no longer exists so five years of playing with these duel clutch boxes is really showing huge improvements. Personally I love the duel clutch gearboxes, I loved it in the Hyundai and I love it in my Alfa which is why I am so impressed with this Santa Fe its brilliant.

Hi John, You have convinced me that reliability is not an issue. My concern is repair costs. I believe DCT quite often can’t be repaired if they do have an issue. They are much more expensive to repair than a standard automatic and much much more expensive than a manual to repair. I have been told that in many situations you have to replace a damaged DCT because it can’t be rebuilt. Is this a fair comment or am I missing the point?
@iandoyle5243
@iandoyle5243 3 жыл бұрын
John, is this an issue that no car manufacturer wants to discuss? A mechanic friend said do not hold a car with a dct if it is out of warranty. Replacing a dct is just to expensive. Is this an over simplification?
