But it was exactly BS. Literally no other reviewer has not loved this Sonata N-Line. If you drove it, you would feel the same. @@rugfixr I have to respectfully disagree. I don't think Mark or Jack can be "bought off". Yes Hyundai/Genesis are raiding the BMW creative personnel, but will the longevity be there? Im seriously considering an N-line Sonata , I sill drive an original Lamda1 engine, built in Alabama day 1, USA and is 2006 3.3 V6 version (235 HP/226 T) with 206K mi (no major out of pocket expenses) and this Sonata is finally faster and does handle better. When I think of how I drive , the rolling wins is all I need to be a safe driver, along with good brakes and traction control. I am glad they reviewed the "final thoughts" as the original discussion was lacking and short sighted and not fair to Hyundai . I did test drive the N-line alone for about 20 min. Its a lot like my car which I love to drive, I did spin the wheels once. That being said I could easily live with it an seriously upgrade my tech along the way + working AC. My car saved my butt 3x I hope for the next to do the same.

I've not had more fun than I did driving this N Line Sonata through twisties, down straightaways, on back-roads and highways, handling everything perfectly. When my sporty fun was done after enjoying the throaty sound of the engine in Sport mode, I switched out of Sport and enjoyed a luxuriously comfortable and peaceful ride to the Ice cream shop. The point of this Sonata N-Line is not to stay in one lane or the other, but to ride that line between sporty and family sedan to give the best of both worlds, not the worst of each. Pro tip- Learn to activate launch control. This is a 0-60 in 5.2 second car with zero chattering or burnout, and zero torque steer even if you don't know how to drive. Off day?

I've watched probably a dozen or two reviews of the Sonata N-line and this Jack guy is the only person who's spoken negatively about it. For $35k you get a car that fits four adults with just fine about-town comfort and great tech that puts up 330i-beating numbers from 0-60 and in the quarter mile for at least $5k-$10k less for a comparably equipped car. And it gets great mileage too. I test drove it and yes, the FWD layout does not lend to BMW-like satisfaction in cornering. But if you want to just have some fun on the highway or on a winding road, it is just great - on a whole new level compared to its Toyota and Honda competition and arguably compared to many much more expensive European and Japanese vehicles. You can have fun without peeling out in a tight turn, Jack.

You're testing it with traction control off. We drove this yesterday and as 2 old boys that have had big block high hp and torque cars this car slays them in most things considering it has to contend with the FWD world of physics. I don't think there is anything amiss with this car given the price. The look is debatable but if one comes up behind you, I guarantee that you will remember that look and after all, we need uniqueness in our designs these days. Muscle cars back in our day were great to look at, sounded good and did well in a straight line. To be honest, my old Honda Accord could wheel spin at a read light. That's just FWD for you. But the old cars couldn't take a twisty road like this car can and in fact most times those old things scared the crap out of me trying to corner. Hyundai and Kia are both on the ascendancy and btw, I read the N stands for the Nurburgring Nordschleiffe where they regularly test and have a shop but hey, maybe it just sounds better.

just saying i own a N-Line sonata ,and that *ding* sound you hear right before he says "i just turn traction control on" is the sound of him turning it off , and i know it is because you only hear that sound after holding the traction control button for a couple seconds and it makes that noise and turns both the traction and stability control off lmfao

I think Jack is missing the point a bit, I'll give my perspective on his criticisms as I recently purchased this. 95% of people aren't going to floor this at every opportunity and roast the tires, and if it's really that much of an issue to you get the $200 summer tire option which will help tremendously. I personally haven't had issues on the all seasons, because I'm not a total hooligan. The ride is stiffer then the normal Sonata, but it's far from uncomfortable. Steering is a bit numb but it's direct and has very balanced handling. I'm personally very happy with my purchase so far.

I've watched all the reviews and narrowed down my search to the N Line and the Accord Sport. I get Jack's frustration, but there is no better family sedan south of the $35k price tag that gives you the performance and fun to drive aspect of the N Line, sorry not even the Accord sport. Despite the lack of Brembo branding, the brakes are actually pretty phenomenal. The car feels lighter than it is and the 2.5t is matched perfectly with the DCT. It is not a track car not should any buyer or journalist expect it to be. Can it be better, sure, but much the same way Honda wants clear distinction and options between the Accord and the TLX, Hyundai wants the same for it's Sonata and G70 offerings. 100% happy with my choice and looking forward to enjoying it after the break in period.

As a recent owner of a 2021 Sonata N-Line, I'll say it's a good car. Not great, but any complaints I have are minor and don't sour the overall driving experience. For the folks who were around in the early/mid 90s, this car is LT1 Camaro/Firebird fast. That's still faster than most cars being sold today. And it gets much better fuel economy, provided you stay out of boost (hard to do). Good. Fast. Comfortable. Sounds like a winning combination to me. Wish it had AWD, but next gen!

I appreciate that you re-recorded this final thoughts. And I 100% agree with you on what EVERYONE does with these types of cars. They add the power a little styling that we all want but EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE in this FWD segment leaves out the most important damn thing. The LSD. As someone who has always loved things like the early 90s Taurus SHO, '02-'03 Sentra Spec V, and my current ride a 10th Gen Civic Si - give me a goddammed mid sizer with decent power and a freaking LSD! Its NOT THAT HARD! I don't need massive amounts of power like an M3 or even a 340 I just want something a little bit special that I won't feel guilty about my kids education money on! You're ALL guilty of it - Accord, Camry, K5, Sonata. The first SOB that FINALLY puts an LSD in this thing (hopefully with a stick but lets face it that ship has probably sailed) will 100% get my money in 2 years!

If you're going to stand on the pedal at every light and corner, then yeah lol. Drive it with some finesse and it's pretty fun. I test drove it just to scratch it off my list. I drove it home 2 hours later. Over 4 weeks and 1500 miles now, I'm glad I chose it. The ride is firm without being harsh. Just how I like it. Skip Barber and some SCCA racing under my belt so I have fun with whatever I drive. It's chuckable and trail brakes nicely. Agreed it should have an LSD at least. It requires finesse to have fun. It's got plenty of torque to drive sedately but still pull away briskly. It revs right to redline with ease compared to the previous generation 2.0T that went flat at 5,500 rpms. Yes the looks are polarizing. People either love it or hate it. I've been approached by strangers about this car more in 4 weeks of ownership than I ever was with my three-pointed stars or 4 rings. I didn't like it when it came out. It grew on me a bit, and a little more so with the N Line grille and trim. But then again I've always been one for oddball cars. I had a 2003 Passat W8 - but in my defense it was 1 of 432 6-speed manuals ever imported to the US 😉

I appreciate the adoption of larger 4 cylinder engines in turbocharged applications. Recently drove a '21 Mazda 3 Turbo and it gives a much smoother power delivery. Some cars absolutely depend on their turbos to even move, like most sub-2.0 liter turbo engines out right now.

I'm on my second Hyundai vehicle such great vehicles. First was 2020 Elantra GT N-Line now Elantra 2021 basically a fanboy for Hyundai forever. I test drove the Sonata and if I recall the vehicle felt quick and that was the base model I can just imagine what the power difference feels like. I'm going to get a 2021 Elantra N DCT one day even if I have to import it myself the value of these vehicles is phenomenal ...lol

I'm just your average overweight family man who wanted something kinda sporty to bring the kids to soccer practice, but on the way home, have some fun. Had a 18 STI, which I loved, but my wife hated. Bought my N-Line a few weeks ago and keep making excuses to go to the grocery store. Look, torque steer, yes sometimes, fun as hell to drive for me.... Hell Yes!!!! Leave it at that. Oh, and it also doesn't hurt that my car payments don't have to equal my mortgage payments in order to have some fun.

...he has legitimate concerns. I understand not wanting to step on toes of showroom mates, but if you are going to sell the idea of sporty, you can't just make one or two changes when 5 or more changes are necessary. If price starts to get in the way, adapt that technology into other platforms...or, bring in the true, real deals fast car. Not sure how many folks will go for a $40k+ Sonata, but I guess if ppl buy $40k STi, Golf-Rs, G70s, Avalon TRDs, S3s, etc, then maybe a $40k+ Sonata isn't that far off the mark; but it needs to perform like a $40k+ car...no pho about it

As fast as a mustang ecoboost 0-60 and quarter mile with a lower horsepower/torque engine, full sized back seat/trunk, and front wheel drive open diff is an impressive feat. I'm in the market for a midsize family Sedan that is also sporty. I test drove this Sonata N line twice. The first one, the salesperson rode along and I was seriously thinking this was going to be my next car. Well thankfully I went and test drove this car a second time alone and realized I'd be paying for new tires every month. It's a blast to drive and rocket sled is a great description, but the tires constantly squealing is not only annoying but will be costly. It does it when you punch it, but also when you go around any turn remotely fast. At this point I'm either going with the 2.0 Honda Accord or the 2021 Stinger GT. If the stinger had a manual, there wouldn't be any other choices. They could have atleast put this DCT in it.

I have owned BMW, Genesis 3.8 G80, Azeras, this car is by far the best combination of smoothness, power, and luxury! The best. I am sure the N Line is a start and a new combination of all that and more power. I highly recommend the new Sonata or K5 cars to anyone. By the way, my daily driver is a 2018 Elantra Sport. The opposite of the Sonata. That is a fun car too but in a different way with a 6 speed!

From a roll that thing was a ROCKET...like able to keep up with 5.0 Mustangs for a little bit, but trying to do anything from a stop was just torque-steer city and one-line burnouts. Unfortunately there's not enough here for me to consider buying a new 2021 model, even with the improvements like dual DI and port injection, wet clutch, etc.

I think most people will open up the throttle when pulling out into traffic. I've got the 2020 Sonata. I can't scoot out in front of traffic. Lots of high end performance cars come with ultra - sticky summer tires that generate terrific numbers. That’s a good way to generate sales. But they are delicate and don’t last. And the prices are ultra too when it’s time for new ones. That’s why I switched to a good set of high performance all-seasons. They can take punishment, they can operate in a wide temperature range and still give real-world street performance that lets me use the car’s power acceptably well when I’m going places. A year ago in November, I left Cape Canaveral in the morning and it was sunny and 75. The next day I got in the car in northern Mississippi to head north toward home and I had to drive on 2-3” of snow and 25F. Summer tires don’t have the flexibility I need on the real highway, going real places. When I got home I put on the winter tires mounted on steel wheels.

The criticism seems to assume people who want powerful sedan engines are frequently flooring the accelerator in a sharp turn on wet pavement. Would most of you really be driving this car in a way to create the “smoke show” they referenced? I test drove the Sonata N-line pretty hard, I thought. Once upon a time nobody thought they'd make respectable mainstream cars, and they were wrong about that. They hired Albert Biermann for a reason, and I'm sure he didn't come cheap. The problem is thinking these N-Line cars are true performance cars when the competitors from the German brands aren't either. We'll have to wait for the full N cars to see what they can really do. I do wish they hadn't put such a powerful engine in this thing. Reserving an LSD for an N model makes sense, but I don't know why they didn't go to AWD. They have that already engineered and there's plenty of demand for such cars.

I don’t get why reviewers want these cars to drive like monsters on a track - they’re not designed to. They’re everyday family cars with extra power for having fun on back roads or overtaking people on the highway. This car is excellent at all of that! Could it use a LSD? Sure. But the car can still do 0-60 in 5.0 seconds (with launch control and summer tires) and will beat a Charger R/T, 330i, C300, A4, IS350 F Sport, TLX Type S, Accord 2.0, WRX STI, etc. etc. etc. in the 1/4 mile (based on Car and Driver posted times). I think it’s a hell of a car, especially at $34,000.
