I've yet to watch this, but I just wanted to right away express my gratitude to your team for taking the time to review normal, every day cars that average joes can hope to one day purchase. Although channels that review fancy cars are fun at times, ultimately getting to know cars that are within my price range is worth it's weight in gold and I appreciate in particular your channel's professionalism, integrity and objectivity as you do this.

I’ve owned my Sonata 1.6T Limited for about six months now. Absolutely love this vehicle !!!! I spend time in it everyday and drive a mix of 2 lane country back roads and interstate driving. At no point have I experienced any bad behavior from the transmission or engine. The shifts are smooth and responsive and it always finds the right gear. I’m aggressive on the backroads which includes several long starlight’s and curves and hills and it never stumbles or hesitates during shifting. Not sure why you had any transmission sloppiness. I’ve owned several Hyundai vehicles over the years and can say for certain that this is the best one yet. They finally got the suspension and steering right and it’s a joy to drive. I have people stop me to ask what it is quite often. They love the styling as much as me. Even the front end....which I think is well done.....even if a fish is referenced...lol.

I own a 2020 limited 1.6T also and i love it just turned over 35000 they only mod i have done is a drop in k&n filter which i recommend it has improved the mid to top end alittle bit. Oh and i just scored a set of voloster N wheels omg this thing handles on rails now.

I was choosing between the big 3: Camry, Accord, Sonata. Before I go further, I’d classify myself as an average driver. I never floor my accelerator, always drive +\-5 of the speed limit, and occasionally drive long trips home from college. After trying those 3, I picked the sonata. I actually like the looks (shocker), but more importantly you get so much more for the money. The car basically drives itself when you turn on lane following and cruise control and it worked way better than the Honda’s or Toyota’s systems. It makes trips very easy. As for the drive trains, I am not a refined enough driver to care all that much or notice for that matter. The final selling point was the 100k mile warranty. I’ve had it for about 8 months now and I still love it as much as the day I bought it.

Please be careful with the cruise control. The research shows the better it works, the more dangerous it is. Learn to use the steering wheel controls so you don't look at the screen.

FYI, my non-daily driver is a 2013 Santa Fe Sport which I bought new in 2012. I used the warrantee three times; once at 36,000ish miles to replace a faulty fuel pump (known issue, but never recalled), once at about 97,000 miles to replace the transmission fluid temperature sensor (I was kinda disappointed it wasn’t the whole transmission... Woulda been nice to get a brand new one right before the warrantee expired, but fortunately it’s working fine), and finally at 102,000 miles to replace the engine block (technically a recall, but they called it a warrantee repair). I just keep everything maintained and everything else has been fine. I had a Honda Civic before this for she met an untimely death at 72,000 miles and while it never left me stranded I had endless problems with electric window motors, electric door locks, the trunk opening randomly on its own, the AC going out. Despite the three repairs, I consider the Hyundai to have been a superior ownership experience. I practically lived in the dealership with that Honda, all for minor stupid things (never the same thing twice so I couldn’t claim lemon law). Of course, my daily is now an Accord, so we’ll soon see if it treats me any better this time. Anyway, enjoy the Sonata, take good care of it, I hope it takes good care of you.

The issue comes with special ones like "California emissions warranty" or extended warranty from lawsuits, etc. The dealer will try to worm their way out of these because they can charge you more than they get from corporate for the warranty work.

@@jaanfo3874 I used to work as a Hyundai technician and I can guarantee you that the transmission fluid temp sensor is a known issue as well. I got so good at those from doing one every other week. Hyundai is pretty good about recalling issues which is good but they also seem to continue to have the same issues year after year despite them being known problems.

The Big Three for years have been Camry, Accord and Altima/Fusion. Sonata has never been a part of that conversation. Not even close. In fact, Sonata is even perennially behind Malibu in terms of Yearly sales figures. So, at best you can say Sonata brings up the rear of the Big Six .

Haha that reminds me of an intersection I pass by often. Its near the bottom of a long hill country road where the speed limit is 55 and the intersecting road is at about a 130 degree angle (from the side coming down the hill). Its also not a stop sign/traffic light so people always come around it wayy too fast. Im guilty of it myself! So you can just see hundreds of deep overlapping heavy right tire marks of the hundreds of cars trying to make the turn at 35 mph instead of a safe 15 or 20 max.

I was a sales manager for a Hyundai dealership. The nice thing is that $36K usually drops to $31K if you live in a competitive market. Invoice pricing less rebates is usually massive. If you go to buy one, ask to see the invoice. Beforehand, go online and see what the rebate amount is for your particular model and trim level. Old school dealers hate to show you this info and will try and hold what they can. They may give you the rebate, but they keep the pricing at MSRP. That’s why you need to see the invoice which is what the dealer pays for the car. At invoice less rebate, they still get holdback which is usually a few percentage points. Also, if they arrange financing, they get a small finance flat which is also a max of a couple percentage points. It’s not a ton of money, but it’s a volume business. They’ll live. A couple exceptions: if you take the low APR option, often times you give up the rebate. This isn’t the dealer playing games, but what Hyundai Motor Finance dictates. Also, if you have fair to bad credit, there is often times a large fee the lender charges for approving the loan. So, the dealer may still be giving you invoice pricing and all of the rebates, but they’ll minus out that lender fee. In summary, a good dealer will disclose all of this info and make sure you understand everything. I worked for a very honest dealership that did this for customers and it created an awesome experience for them. There are good dealers out there so shop around until you find one. Wifey and I were tempted to pick up a 2020 Sonata last spring but it’s hard for me to buy any car in its first year either when new or after a major refresh. Ended up getting one of the last 2019s, in SEL trim for a little more than $23k out the door after discounts. The 2.4L and 6 speed auto is perfect as a commuter and daily driver.

Thanks for the in-depth review, most appreciated. I just purchased the 2020 Sonata, this will be my fourth one. I just bought the Preferred model and I am just waiting for it to arrive. I found the new 2.5 litre engine quite peppy on the demo I drove and you are right, this is a highway cruiser. I have been quite satisfied with all of them and they only seem to get more refined when I trade in every few years. I always buy a blue one for some reason. :) I’m retired now and look forward to some nice trips in my new car. Thanks from Mississauga Ontario.

I have to admit, I found this channel when researching the 2015 Sonata (which I did purchase, 2.0T for those wondering) and I've become a bit of a Hyundai fanboy. I've been looking at the 2020 with rose colored lenses because of the amount of stuff you get and the improvements made over a relatively short time. I mention all this because I want to express my appreciation for SavageGeese on how he critiques these cars. Almost all other reviewers rightly praise the Sonata for all the tech, and improvements, and value, etc etc etc and they all say the same things over and over. In this channel, there's no fear for calling out what was done right, what could be improved, and what is bad, and there isn't a car that's been reviewed here that hasn't been given it's due praise as well as pointing out what's terrible. Not only did this channel channel help me critique the car I was purchasing, but it also helped me critique myself in what I value and how much I was influenced by "industry assumptions" on what is good and what is bad.

I'm leasing a 2020 Hyundai Elantra as a daily driver. My 4runners were costing me a fortune on maintenance and gas. Whenever you use AWD daily, you need to get those oils changed, and there's a whole protocol to keep it running smooth. I just parked them booth and leased an Elantra as a daily beater. I freaking love it. I used to Laugh at them. But really, their CVT and little engines can haul ass. As funny as this may sound but when you engage, "sport" mode, the exhaust opens up, response becomes linear, steering tightens and it makes merging on to highway or zipping around town a breeze. I was able to get it with a sun roof, all the safety features, key less entry, with push button start, blind spot monitoring, break assist when it senses you to close to another vehicle, back up camera. No leather, no power seats. No navigation, but does have blue tooth, satilie and android auto for under 19k during peak Pandemic time! I walked in with little more than a drivers license. And walked out with the car and payments less than $290 for 36 months with 18k a year.

Great video as always really enjoy your reviews. I've been keeping my eye on this car for awhile. Went to the auto show in my city and spent a lot of time checking this car out. I went ahead and bought one in the SEL trim with the 2.5l got a pretty good deal on it maybe because of all the covid stuff. Initially I thought the transmission was really smooth but every now and then it shifts a little hard. Really the only other complaint I have is when shifting between park, drive and reverse it's just a little too slow and if you press the button too fast it doesn't always register that it was pressed. My favorite part of this car are the standard safety features that make everyday driving so much better.

Just bought a hybrid Blue trim model last week, the one that's rated for 54mpg on the highway, and I'm very pleased so far. It is extremely comfortable and quiet, and as Geese says, the powertrain transitions are utterly seemless; if it wasn't for the display screen, I'd rarely ever know if the engine was on (full-throttle situations obviously excepted). What I'm most amazed by is the frequency with which the engine will turn off at highway speeds. The system seems to do a great job at using the electric motor and battery to maintain momentum once you're up to speed, and so I'll find myself cruising along at 65-75mph with the engine off; because of that, my highway drives have been sometimes exceeding 60mpg (according to the trip computer, at least), which seems crazy for such a big car. The whole thing just feels very refined, and I'm looking forward to years and years of owning this car.

I drove the last gen Sonata as a loaner vehicle from a body shop. I thought it was pretty good, very spacious and comfortable. It was changing my mind about Hyundai until I read all the horror stories of all the catastrophic engine failures and catching fire. Look it up on car complaints

And to be fair, this is coming from some who often drives a 2018 Acura TLX 4 banger. It has a strange transmission: dual clutch with a torque converter, which does little to smooth out the jerky transmission. Compared to that, Sonata Limited was exceptionally smooth, and shifts weren't perceptible until I was close to redline

@@Anonymous-ji4sb That was an issue with engine knock. Hyundai recently extended your warranty and replaces your engine for free. Mistakes happen, and Hyundai covered their customers and did the work for free.

G H if there fixing it what’s the issue ? My 2006 went to 220k before I crashed it. My 2014 azera is at 60k with absolutely nothing but standard maintenance. And I don’t expect a damn thing till it’s on the other side of 120k .

Mitchell Steindler Personally as someone who buys their cars instead of leasing them (and therefore hangs onto them for longer) I’d rather buy a highly spec’d reliable far eastern offering that I know won’t throw up error messages every few months, than a low spec’d (due to budget limitations) German car which comes with more prestige but endless issues. Yes they’re better to drive, but come on, most of us sit in traffic anyway. 0-60 times don’t matter in the real world, nor does cornering. But each to their own eh. I’ve had German cars. Fun for a while until warning lights start popping up 😆😆 No-ones buying Genesis’ anymore are they? Aren’t they in trouble? German cars are kinda surgical and generic nowadays, at least the Koreans and Japanese try to add a bit of flair or whatever you wanna call it.

Look at reviews that compare different direct-injection designs. All cars will have blow-by but that doesn't necessarily mean it will end up on the valves. The past couple years manufacturers have been redesigning direct injection, without having to add port injection, to deal with gunk buildup on valves.

I just got the SEL PLUS that has the glowing yellow color and I get tons of compliments everyday. Hyundai did well on this model.

I have 2013 Limited Sonata which I have paid off for awhile now. I went to the dealer late last year to look at the new model Sonata Limited and I gotta say, from looking at the pictures I wasn't the biggest fan of the grill but in person, it grew on me. Got in the car, salesman sat in the back behind me as my friend was in the passenger seat. I knew some of the features but I let the salesman talk about some of the other things I wasn't aware of. I was ready to take it for a spin and I asked him where the parking break was, I'm used to using my left foot to release it. He says to look next to the traction control button and I'm getting lost and I finally found it. The ride was smooth and quiet, love the Bose audio system in it as well. Heads up display was wonderful as I could see my speed up on the windshield. For how well the room is in the car, everyone has a different body type. I'm 6'2, 270 and I have more of that football linebacker build. Usually where my issues come into play is the height. Thankfully no issues with that. Seat supported my body well, I didn't feel like I would have issues sitting in that seat for hours driving. Overall, the amount of features in this Limited trim, the room in the car, the Bose audio, ambient lighting....the infotainment, I was surprised in person how well it all came together inside. My friend who is not even a car guy by any means said he was amazed with everything in it and I've never heard him say anything about cars before. My two colors of choice are the Portofino grey and Stormy Sea. After I make my decision I'll be putting 25% tints on the side and back windows. Makes it cooler in the summer and gives it a nicer look as well.

It's a big improvement, but for me, I still prefer the Mazda 6 Signature w/ the turbo 4 and brown interior for a sedan.

Wow, they've come a long way. I worked at a Hyundai dealership in the late 80's. The cars used to come in and you could look up at the cars on the upper deck of the car carrier and the entire underside of the cars would be rusted from stem to stern. Not just surface rust either, sometimes it was rusted right through the floor pans. They were mechanically sound, though. They came off the boat with only 2 quarts of oil in the engine. Our prep facility was 2 miles from the dealership. I would sometimes have to drive the cars over there for detailing. I would beat the absolute shit out of them in that 2 miles. Redline clutch drops, no lift shifts at 7,500 rpm, reverse burnouts/doughnuts with the wheel at full lock. All of this with only 2 quarts of oil in the crank and they all took it like champs. Ahh, the good 'ol days.

Decent car with some strong points, but certainly doesn't raise the bar for midsize sedans. There are a lot of good midsize sedans out there. Many of which are better than the Sonata. Thanks for the review of a car in a forgotten segment.

This is my third sonata (2011,2017 & 2020) this is by far the most refined ride out of all of them. Hyundai has found a way to make the ride more complient and composed without sacrificing sportiness. While the engine is not as powerful as my old 2.0T, it is sufficient for every day driving. The tech package in my Limited model is worth the price of admission and would have cost hundreds more in other models. I've only had it for two months, but I have a smile on my face every time I take a trip. Well done Hyundai!

I just had an opportunity to drive one of these. It's not bad. Quiet, comfortable, good amount of space inside and in the trunk. Adaptive cruise/lane keeping works well in traffic. But the push button shifter - what an idiot design. Three piano-gloss black plastic buttons (R/N/D) that feel exactly the same, and unless you look down at the shifter, you have no idea what gear you're in. Try a three-point turn. Or parallel parking. - it's impossible to do it without looking down at the shifter. Unlike a shift lever, where you can feel what gear you're in by the position of the lever.

I guess I should say that I just discovered a savagegeese review. I have to say I liked the review and your format. It is not a cookie cutter review. I love that you went deep into the mechanical portion of the car. Quite refreshing. I hope to see your review when the Hyundai Azera/Grandeur comes to the states. Reviews that I have seen that were done in S. Korea show a vehicle that will be the flagship for Hyundai. Honestly, I think the design inside and out are exceptional. I will wait till it hits our market before I buy a new car. The hybrid is what I have not seen reviewed yet in Korea. I am leaning toward buying the hybrid, I hope to see you review it in the future. I own a 2007 Sonata limited that I purchased new as a dealer demo, and it's been a great, dependable ride for over 13 years. I really like the naturally aspirated 6 cylinder, and wish that they still offered one.

I own a 2016 Sonata GL 2.4L and it is a beast and NO, it does not look cheap! It is fully functional and dependable! At 100,000km it does not even need alignment yet!

I like the direction Hyundai/Kia are going, and although I'm not really a fan of the looks of this new Sonata, I wish you had also mentioned the cool chrome-to-LED headlight panels! Super interesting concept that seems like it was implemented very well.

Previously owned Alfa Romeo Giulia, and I test drove 1.6 limited sonata. I was blown away how well it drove. I didn't even noticed that this car is just 180hp. Traction issue you mentioned wasn't there but I think that's because I live in CA. I was so impressed I ended up buying Elantra gt N-Line.

@Nissan370Z Glass This may sound ridiculous, but it wasn't what I expected. The car is perfect in handling, and good looking inside and out, but that was it. Yes it wasn't quad version but I expected more from alfa. My previous car was Abarth 500 and alfa lacked fun and character compare to abarth. To my 2 years of experience it was more 'german' than italian. Compare to abarth, it was less fun but it wasnt really more practical either, surprisingly. Every time I bring my family they hated being in the car and I understand them. The suspension for me it felt like they only tested for handling, and only in driver seat. If you move seat to seat they all feel like different car. As if they changed coupe to sedan in last second of manufacturing.

@Nissan370Z Glass and for the reliability stand point, I had to replace radiator, and turbo due to the radiator leak caused by a bad oring, and it is a known problem. I knew what I was going into, and it was covered under warranty. But it happened as low as 13k miles. And maintenance cost was my main issue. It was free on first year, then 600 on second year, and I was expected to pay a grand for next year, so I had to sell it. It was not like I cannot afford it, I just couldn't justify it. But all those aside it is still one of the best car I've driven. It just lacks drama.

As an '11 Sonata 2.0T owner, I want to hear ONE thing from Hyundai before I buy another one. What did they improve with the "Smartstream" motors that will keep them from blowing up?!? Yes, I see that the 2.5 copied Toyota and uses multi port + direct injection (which hopefully stops them from having issues with blow by, etc.). But I want to hear more details, including on the 1.6T, of what improvements they've made. We've been through a TON of recalls, too long to list. Many of us has our engine replaced. Getting past that, the '11-14 Sonatas had a relatively unobtrusive traction control and ABS system. You had to really try to get the ABS light to turn on. Surprising how far things have changed in a decade. Thanks for the informative review, professional as always.

I haven't driven nor sat in the new Sonata but I do own a 2015 2.0T and the main thing is that it's reliable, good on gas, has more than enough power and is loaded with creature comforts. I drove it from the east to west coast last year and not once did anything fail. I do agree that the 6sp trans feels like a DCT, especially when accelerating from a stop light. It looks like they've solved the NVH issues as mine could use more road noise suppression. Overall, Hyundai/Kia/Genesis are doing a great job in listening to their customers and constantly making improvements. I'm interested in how the Sonata N-Line performs, given the FWD drivetrain !

I've driven the 1.6T and the 2.5L and I think you're right on the nose with the 1.6T. It loses it's breath when it hits 5000 rpms. I wasn't able to get it to bog down on hard launches but you can tell, even in sport, that the transmission is geared for cruising. The 2.5L doesn't have nearly the low end torque but it revs freely to redline without getting buzzy.

I recently got the base model with the 2.5 and I agree that the drivetrain could be improved. Other than that when cross-shopping with an Accord, it blew it out of the water in terms of standard features and ride quality. Hopefully the transmission won’t blow up like it did at 60k miles with the 03 Acura TL I eventually replaced with the Sonata.

He is 100 percent right about the traction control system. Actually he was being nice. I have owned a Kia or a Hyuandai for the past 8 years and that stupid system has almost killed me multiple times where I am pulling into oncoming traffic and it will basically totally kill the engine for no fucking reason. It's terrifying. It's to the point now that I turn on traction control when having to pull onto a busy road. Cars owned 2011 Kia Optima 2019 Hyundia elentra GT turbo

Hyundai still has identity issues. They try to be like everyone else. Mercedes,they try to be more European, then go back to being conservative. Hiring a former VW executive was smart for making it's cars look better.

Thank you for mentioning that the NA Engine has both port and direct injection, i was not aware of that. I really hate that very few automakers are implementing this. I hope they add it to the turbo engines.

I got my Limited this month. I have to agree with you. After about 1,000 miles so far I’ve noticed that the transmission sometimes feels stuck or mushy. If I need to accelerate quickly I either use sport mode or the paddle shifters to stay high in the RPM. Otherwise I love the LCD dash and DRL that fade to chrome and the moonroof is also amazing. I really hope this car lasts me 15-20 years like my 2000 Maxima did that I am getting out of.

Having owned the 1.6T limited Sonata. Spot on with the interior and exterior. I love both aspects. The engine is nice, feels a bit better than specs sheet leads you to believe. That 8 speed transmission though loves to hang in 3 or 4 gear when driving in the city, highway performance for it fine and it upshifts and downshifts fine. But almost everyday I feel like it is broken when driving in the city and it hangs. The parking sensors also randomly go off while stopping at a light, which is weird, but kind of like whatever.

I get the parking sensor thing, too. I think it is sensing the cloud of exhaust coming out of the in front of you, especially in cold weather when there is visible steam in it.

You're spot on regarding power delivery. Hyundai still has some work to do regarding traction control. It's quick to pull power and doesn't give it back quickly enough. Overall they seem to be making some good, solid cars these days.
