I'm actually glad they used cheap plastics in the interior of the VN and priced it accordingly. Personally, the parts where it mattered for a performance car was focused on, pardon the pun. If you gather all the cars in this segment there isn't one interior that I'm completely fond of. The RS is a joke, the Type R's interior is gaudy, the VN is passable but if I had to pick one as-is, I would still pick the VN. Down the road when these become cheap to pick up, I'll likely get one and strip the interior, rear-seat delete and put in some Corbeau and cage. Recently saw a video from Bucky Lasek where he built a 90's Impreza and it's decked out in alcantara and race car bits. Thing is a beast and was done to mimic a Porsche GT3 RS and I think the VN could be a good candidate for that. A true to heart, performance hatch with no compromise.

The Yellow Cursor I agree, I picked up a Veloster N and honestly idk why people hate the plastics, they’re stupid easy to clean and it made it so affordable due to it like you mentioned. I’m also a simple guy, the Apple car play and the nice seats is all I need. I’m here to drive not to feel up on my interior lol
@SonsofSpeed4 жыл бұрын
Our biggest problem is when they use the hard plastics in places where it will contact your knees. After a day on the track, you'll end up with some very sore knees. But as we say in the video, use of those materials is why this car costs less than $30k instead of $35-40k, so at least Hyundai is passing the savings on to you.
@xaznranmarux4 жыл бұрын
Sons of Speed Not a bad point lol. Although I’d much rather just buy some padding to add on to those spots to save some knees rather than tack on another couple thousand for some better material all around 😂 Cause I definitely won’t be sitting at a stop light and be feeling my dashboard up lol. Pricing was really why I said bye to the Type R

Great review, thanks guys! I own one and it’s my daily driver, in N custom mode you keep all the N settings and just soften the ride and it’s more than good enough for daily use. It also holds a small PA system I use for playing in a band. Practical when full and hilariously fun when empty!

Miguel my previous car was a 2013 Veloster Turbo, it gave me 200,000 km before I traded it for the 2019 N. It was a solid little car. Read Consumer Reports and JD Power, the brand has highly rated and has been for years.

Bought a 2020 N. Best car for the $$ in a hatch. I’ve driven C7 Z51, Miata RF, WRX, 370z , and a Slingshot. I’d take the C7 (or a C8), but too much power for street and too much $$$. I drove the same back roads, with all those cars, you have more fun in the Veloster N. (R&T Performance Car of the Year in 2020.) good review!!!

Noticeably lifting off the RS throttle earlier than the Veloster. Would be nice to know if both cars had the same quality of rubber, but I suspect the RS tires are not nearly the equal of the Veloster's.

The P Zeros on the N (w/ PP) seem to have a bit better dry traction than the Super Sports on the RS and the N (w/o PP). I am guessing the RS likely had the PSS rather than the SC2s or the cars wouldn't have been quite this close (with 'this close' being relative.)
@SonsofSpeed4 жыл бұрын
The RS was wearing Michelin Pilot 4S that were literally two weeks old.

@@SonsofSpeed This makes sense. I figured it was a PSS or something comparable as the spread would be a bit wider if the RS was on the SC2s (and narrower if the N was on Trofeo Rs). Solid video!

I've owned a Focus RS and test-driven the Veloster n and I can say without a doubt that the veloster's ride quality is so much better than the RS, I had to get rid of the RS after 8 months because I couldn't take the horrible ride quality even in normal setting.
@SolarEclipse7774 жыл бұрын
I seldom select the race mode on my RS, but I drive my car in Sport mode every time I get into it and there is nothing whatsoever wrong with the ride quality. Sure it is tight, but that's what I expect from a car like the RS. If I want soft and sloppy there are lots of other cars that offer that. My RS ride quality is great, and w-a-a-y better than my 911 Turbo.
@DanielBrown37934 жыл бұрын
Missed the first 3 apexs in the focus. Seemed like you were still figuring out the car. Can't speak for the N. Definitely been wanting to see what it can do. FWD vs AWD doesn't really matter when it's dry. All depends on the driver. Cars are definitely closely matched. All I got out of this? Is that with the same driver, RS is faster! 👍👍
@enzodamu4 жыл бұрын
Yep, was just about to say the same thing. He could've shaved a couple seconds off by holding his line better in the turns. SoS, thank you for making this video. Been wanting to see this comparison.
@npaul41714 жыл бұрын
The RS is unquestionably a faster car. It accelerates quite a bit faster. It can hold more speed through corners. I consider the difference in times here pretty significant. At VIR, the RS was about 4 seconds faster than the N. When I've driven a friend's RS, I have found it a bit more challenging to drive extremely proficiently than my N. That might in part be my own limited experience with AWD.

@SonsofSpeed4 жыл бұрын
So the interior shots you see (for example at 2:00) are stock footage shots provided by Hyundai for media use. Often they will film a preproduction car, and the heated seats may not have made the final cut. On our test car, the button was blanked out. We'll check with Hyundai on what happened to the heated seats.

@@esantiago8989 I was curious as to this myself. It has the PP wheels, but doesnt have the LSD and exhaust setting in the N menu - but it running that close to the RS suggests this is without question a PP version. Then I noticed this car appears to have heated seats. My first thought is that this may not be an American-spec N, as I believe only the Canadian N has the heated seat option, and all Canadian-spec N's are PP versions. Then I realized the date on the LCD - Dec 13 - I'm guessing now that the close-up of some of the interior shots are stock to get extremely high res shots.

MrMellowstone actually, no. This shoot lasted less than 3 hours (45 minutes of which was waiting for members to clear the track), and aside from some half speed laps with the camera car and low-speed laps without helmets to discuss the car, each vehicle had a total of six hot laps that day. The Veloster N really is that impressive, which is probably why it also just won R&T’s Performance Car of the Year.

@@turbogeoduck1 Sorry for such a long delay in replying to your message... actually, Paul is the owner of the RS so to keep things as fair as possible, we had Brendan drive the cars in this review so as to take the "daily driver" advantage out of the equation. Also, the Veloster N press car had 4 month old tires with no wear and plenty of tread, sure they weren't two weeks old - but in contrast, the brakes on the RS where fairly worn down so the RS may of had slightly fresher tires but the Veloster had way fresher brakes. No comparison test is ever prefect but we tried our best - hell, we wanted to see the results just as much as you did.
