The hot hatch market has seen a lot of movement lately. You've had some cars get canceled, like the Focus ST and Fiesta ST, but you've also had some new contenders like this Hyundai Veloster N. To be honest, I was never impressed with the previous version of this car, but as you'll see in this episode, a lot has changed.

Hahaha! Younglings! I'm 52 and I have been tearing up the back roads in middle Georgia since April in mine. Getting close to 10k Miles and this little bastard has taken it like a champ. Even commuting to work down the 65mph posted highway is a challenge to keep a lid on it, and I rarely do. I'm like a jet fighter pilot pulling up around crop dusters. Now that being said... I understand that this is not truly a FAST car, it's the handling I love. This car feels like it is an extension of my body and when I think something... It does it. Rapidly

Love the out takes at the end!!! I’m gonna get on of these in a year or so. Sold Hyundai’s for 5 years. I was with them when they launched the Veloster. Was really excited about the car, then it tanked in sales!!! Now they took it off the Accent platform and put it on the Elantra Sport platform. Adding the Albert Bierman factor made all the difference. Before I sold Hyundai’s I sold In the Luxury market for 15 years. Loved them, but in 2010 Luxury sales slowed down to a crawl. Then I saw the 2010 Sonata’s everywhere!! They were sexy looking and a fraction of the price of the Luxury brands! Made the move and never regretted it. I’m retired from car sales now but still miss it. Still visit my old dealer for service and on going friendship. I bought my wife an Elantra Limited before I retired. It has been an amazing car. In the last 50K Miles it has only needed tires, battery, front breaks, and regular oil changes. Very happy with my purchase. Subbing.

@anengineerandacat
@anengineerandacat 3 жыл бұрын
@@imtheonehero9305 Yeah, you are right; the type-R is pretty ugly and has far less personality but the specs on it are great. The thing is though, Honda has been producing that for quite some time and this is Hyundai's first real attempt at a proper hot-hatch. The VN w/PP is without a doubt the best bang for overall buck for the segment, 10 year warranty, 5 year track warranty, 28k for the stick and 32-35k for the DCT. It's also a great beginner's car for anyone picking up stick, the rev-matching is incredibly good and the assistive start is always a welcoming reminder. Only real complaints is that the gearbox is kinda underwhelming for the manual, the Focus RS I learned on felt a fair bit better and my friends Type R doesn't feel like things are super loose; all things that can be improved on though and after a new rear motor mount it helped to stiffen things up. 5k+ miles in, a few issues with it but overall I still love my VN; hoping that one day they'll make an AWD variant to swap over too.

Well done! My wife and I LOVE this car. This will be our next car. After driving a manual for most of my life, I really do miss it after buying an automatic. This Veloster N just looks like a fun car. Back in high school I had a Honda CRX. It was a sad day when I had to let that go. After the second engine swap, it did not make sense to keep it after it broke down again. In my opinion, this Veloster N is the spiritual successor to the Honda CRX AND is has a back seat AND that Hyundai 10 year/100,000 mile warranty! A 10 year warranty in a hot hatch. WOW. I am working right now to try to find a way to make this our second car. Again, thanks for the video and I will have to drive that road. when I get it. It is simply epic! BTW, Racing Blue is the color to get for this Veloster N.

If Toyota will release a GRMN Version of the the Corolla Hathcback in the states (since they didn't give us the GRMN Yaris) I think they could really get this market stirred up. A supercharged version of the Corolla with some better suspension and a LSD would be an amazing. It's already a great car stock, and really good with RSR springs and sticky tires.

Tim Riener I agree with you, Tim! My two gripes were: Audio the worst/infotainment ugly & the sluggish throttle response. On the other hand, the ride and handling were far above the class pretty much Lexus-like! The rest of the interior looks keen. Compared to Civic though, you lose 2-3 inches in rear area. I think if they improved the audio and also engine sound with real exhaust tips and you felt a better tuned power delivery, the Corolla could sell way more hatches

I totally agree with Hyundai's choice not to care too much about Nordschleife times and prioritizing the driving experience. I actually noticed there was no record of them testing the Veloster N there recently and thought it was strange, but now I know lol. That said, I've messed with a really high quality mod of the 2019 VN on Assetto Corsa's laser scanned Ring (real hp, weight numbers etc.) and I can tell you it is a sub 8:00 or even 7:50 car with a professional driver with racing tires (I've only managed to get 8:23). I'm sure the mod/sim doesn't replicate the real life suspension geometry perfectly, but I found the cornering speed and ease of getting close to the limit the best part of the car (like the type R). I'm sure in real life it's even better, because I've heard nothing but good things about the handling. Also does really well top speed wise and doesn't bog down like a Miata on the 3 uber long straights. But yeah, I have no doubt people are running sub 8 minutes.

No one ever compares it directly to the Focus ST, which is the closest other thing to it, in my opinion. Yes, the Focus ST isn't coming to the States anymore, but this car would be the natural replacement for one. You get car that's 100% usable day-to-day, but that sacrifices some comfort, interior quality, and practicality to be a VERY capable performer. It's like a slightly less compromising GTI, which is exactly what the Focus ST was.
