Pikmin! I think they are cute little guys personally, but I'm sure they are absolutely frustrating to control. Way too many creatures to manage at one time lol. One fun thing though is that you're absolutely right about the ending. I can't remember where I saw it, but someone left a cool comment somewhere talking about how the Pikmin have evolved over the different game entries. These ones in the first game might have been clumsy, but once you get to the third game they're not only more capable, but you find them everywhere. They travel in packs by default. Olimar didn't just teach the Pikmin to defend themselves, in a way he basically flipped the food chain completely around.

Pikmin's 2, 3, & 4 are all great games as well, so if you enjoyed this, you'd likely enjoy those as well. I played them as they came out, so I've gone in order, but this is the second hardest of the Pikmin games, with Pikmin 2 being the hardest if you want more of a challenge. Pikmin 2's re-releases have had to have some visual changes... If you choose to play it and have access to the original GameCube version, I highly recommend that one over its rereleases. Also, Pikmins 3 & 4 both have coop multiplayer modes. Pikmin 3 Deluxe can go fully 2 player, and 4 can be 1.5 player. (3's multiplayer was added just for the Deluxe re-release on the Switch.) Pikmin 4 is the easiest of the Pikmin series. I've only done zero pikmin death runs in 3 & 4. I wouldn't even attempt that in 1 or 2. Hey Pikmin is a side view platformer. I don't recommend it.

@@cortinastone I certainly don't recommend people play Hey Pikmin! (especially if they enjoy Pikmin-style gameplay), but there are absolutely 3DS games I've disliked more than it. With different branding, I'd put it just above most 3DS shovelware... It's more the Pikmin branding on the game that hurts than the actual gameplay because it's so long between Pikmin games and what we got just wasn't a Pikmin game. It's old history at this point anyway though. No one's considering picking this game up in 2024. I'd rather hope for the future of the series than complain about its past mistakes though. Hopefully we won't have nearly as long of a wait until Pikmin 5, and Nintendo has already said something about not wanting us to wait as long for the next Pikmin. Also... Maybe the Pikmin-like genre will pick up in the indie scene like Metroidvanias have? That'd be great... There are only a handful of Pikmin-likes outside of the Pikmin series I'm aware of so far, but who knows?

@@gboogie3257 Liking things is better than not liking things, so it's good that you enjoy it. The issue people have with it though mostly has more to do with its timing than its quality, really. Pikmin basically created a new genre. At the release of Pikmin 3, we only had the three Pikmin games and three Overlord games for this style of gameplay. Hey, Pikmin! was released 4 years after Pikmin 3 & 6 years before Pikmin 4, and it's not really a Pikmin game, but is using the Pikmin branding. That's why it was frustrating. If a Mario game is released that's of an entirely different genre, Mario fans won't complain so much because the time between Mario games isn't nearly as great. There have also been very few other games that play like Pikmin (though the numbers of these have been growing more recently, and I'm hoping the Pikmin-like genre gets big for indies the way Meroidvanias have, as Metroidvanias used to have the same problem before indies started making a *ton* of them). As a collection platformer, Hey, Pikmin! is alright, but it just has that frustration attached to it, even though the reasons behind it are no longer relevant.

But it and Pikmin 2, genuinely, the best way to play em was on Wii, being able to point at where you wanted to throw them was phenomenal! Because the swarm mechanic requires holding one of the left trigger buttons Pikmin 2 is significantly harder on the Switch version and is full of the sort of jank and borderline-unfair traps that a) require complete mastery of swarming and b) which were surgically removed from Pikmin 4. Of course I still want to see Therm tackle Pikmin 2 because he reacts to this kind of bullshit like a younger gayer Vinny Vinesauce and that is very funny to me.

I mean, I played Pikmin 4 before this and my response was honestly the same as his. It's an old game and there's a lot of things questionable in design such as bad Pikmin ai, throwing Pikmin over bomb walls by accident, Pikmin always falling off narrow ledges, takes taking much longer etc. I do like however how brutal the enemies can be. Some even give you a sense of dread.

Sadly, about 80% of Therm's problems would have been solved by the direct pikmin control, which is still in the switch version but was much easier and more responsive in the original gamecube version. It lets you manipulate how the entire pikmin group stands while following you, so you can squish them or move them ahead of you to avoid traps or falling into water.

I apologize, my dude but that’s what happens when you rush into things instead of testing the waters first! 18:19 I know you said this is the first time you’re playing the game and you’re learning but testing the waters has nothing to do with knowing the game. What I like to do is sit there and wait for the monster to attack to see what its moves are. ( and move out of the way before the attack hits of course ) Then Id throw five Pickman at the most to test out the damage they do and see if it has any weak points. Then once I can completely analyze the situation I go all in and take it down. Some can be taken down with brute force like the Bulborb ( as long as you attack it from behind ) and others you have to be more patient and throw a handful of pikmin at them at a time. At least for me because if I throw too many Pickman and not all of them reach their target then the monster will eat them.
