A drive down interstate 264 from Downtown Norfolk to its end at the Oceanfront in Virginia Beach.
Filmed: August 2020
From Wikipedia:
Interstate 264 (I-264) is an Interstate Highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. It serves as the primary east-west highway through the South Hampton Roads region in southeastern Virginia. The route connects the central business districts of Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach and serves as the most direct link between those cities and the resort beaches along Virginia's Atlantic coast.
It runs from a junction with Interstate 64 and Interstate 664 (Hampton Roads Beltway) near Bowers Hill in Chesapeake east into Portsmouth and through the Downtown Tunnel under the South Branch Elizabeth River into Norfolk. At the Interstate 464 interchange in the Berkley section of Norfolk, I-264 turns north, crossing the East Branch Elizabeth River into downtown Norfolk on the Berkley Bridge, one of a small number of drawbridges on the Interstate Highway System. I-264 then heads east through Norfolk, crossing Interstate 64 at the east side of the Hampton Roads Beltway, and into Virginia Beach, where it ends at Parks Avenue just short of the Atlantic Ocean. From this point, 21st and 22nd streets continue as a one-way pair with no route designation to U.S. Route 60 (Pacific Avenue).
The original section of I-264, designated in the late 1950s, lies between the two I-64 junctions. The piece east to the Virginia Beach waterfront was built as the Virginia Beach-Norfolk Expressway (a toll road until 1995), and carried State Route 44 until I-264 was extended over it in 1999.
When I-64 was augmented in the 1990s with reversible HOV lanes, I-264 towards Virginia Beach (then SR 44) was designated as the eastern terminus of the reversible lanes and one of the few direct exits from/entrances to the HOV lanes.
I-264 is a part of the National Highway System for its entire length. A toll for use of the Downtown Tunnel began February 1, 2014. Tolls are collected electronically and (as of 2019) set at $2.20 during peak hours and $1.79 during off-peak hours for E-ZPass users.

Coming in to Nawhfek on the Berkeley bridge is interesting 🤨 , you have the tunnel crowd coming from Ptown ( 264 West ) and you have the South side ( 464 ) crisscrossing on the Bridge , makes an interesting afternoon

i always said that i-264 E going towards VA Beach coming from Norfolk reminds of less compact version of i-495 Long island expressway going East towards long island based of the infrastructure

9:30 location of the old SR44 $.25 toll. The hump is because there was (is?) a tunnel under the highway for the toll keepers to get from one side to the other. Rumor has it young people would pay the toll and when the gate lifted race to the oceanfront 😂 Entrance ramps after this was $.10 or a handful of pennies 😂😂😂 Miss opening my door and looking on the ground for dropped change 😂 Have I started subbed and smashed that notification bell yet 😄

There were no gates on that toll (seriously, find an old pic) , just a green light when you paid, 44 expressway was crawling with popo , lots of better places to race

Yea I remember those days. And the on/off ramps it were like 10c. I would get out of the car and pick up the loose change where people missed throwing it in.

You could pre-pay for the toll booths by buying little ticket books where you tear out each ticket anytime you went through. I remember my parents would go to the bank to buy new books anytime they ran out so now I'm wondering if those were the only places you could buy them.

When/if you ever make it to Lou(:E:)ville you’ll have to travel our 264W/E and I-65N/S which are both one of the widest freeways here in the USofA 13/14 lanes!!

Which now that I watched again.. it didn’t really have anywhere to go? Besides the fast lane. Which it should have. But, I can kind of understand why he/she didn’t do that.. probably nervous and didn’t know what to do lol

I’ve heard many say it’s the best city to live in out of the Hampton roads area. What’s your criteria for a place to move to?

Baltimore has better amenities since it’s a lot larger but this area seems lower on crime. Plus living close to the beach is always nice.

@@MileageMikeTravels, is the traffic really bad down there. It's horrible on 695, beltway around Baltimore.

I haven't spent enough time there to say from personal experience but from the friends/relatives I have in the area they say the main thing is to make sure that your job is on the same side of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel that you live on. Outside of that I haven't heard anything bad about traffic.

I’m wondering are you allowed to get into the HOV lane just to pass someone using the fast lane then get back over when it’s just you?

Probably not, I'd imagine. The HOV lanes operate on a schedule and during this video they were open to all traffic anyway.
