Winter maintenance of those flyovers has to be rather fun, but it is an interesting drive. Wisconsin continues to improve US 53 to a freeway in several parts from there southeast, including I-535. US 61 (London Rd. and Grand Av.) went into town, then 61 turned to a four-laner west of Boundary Av. and proceeded south, going back to two lanes on the way to St. Paul. There had been some discussion to make US 61(now MN 61) four lanes to the Canadian border, but there wasn't much support and the four lanes end at Two Harbors. US 61's northern terminus has been at I-35 at Wyoming, north of St. Paul, since 1991. MNDOT did the same with US 65, ending it at I-35 in Albert Lea around the same time, along with US 16 at I-90 at Dexter. There's a small segment (MN 16) remaining east to LaCrosse.

I've always wondered WHY there is no real good direct road to go from the twin cities to Sioux Falls SD... you kinda have to go south a long ways to get to i90 and then go west or get onto MN-23 and see all the sights 8^) or other back routes and work your way south and west

@@efil4kizum There's a more direct route now that's all 4-lanes: US 169 to past Mankato then MN 60 to Worthington and I-90. MnDOT finished 4-laning 60 in the past decade.

US 65 was truncated to Albert Lea in 1980...though signs along I-35 lingered well into the 1980s.

Had to check this terminus against the map in the "Yellow Book" for Interstates. I-35 was never intentionally planned to go north of Duluth.

No way it would happen, at least following Highway 61’s route. Way too scenic and historic of a highway to replace it with an interstate

I would imagine there has been discussion of extending I-35 to the Canadian border just outside of Thunder Bay, ON. That would make it the perfect NAFTA route, and add valuable economic activity to that otherwise desolate part of Ontario.

There was, but rich lake front owners prevented that as does low traffic count to Thunder bay.

I'm a MN native and I have found zero evidence of any consideration of extending I-35 anywhere past the northeastern edge of Duluth.

Are you out of your mind?. Your comment made my hair stand on end. An interstate going up the North shore would absolutely destroy every state park and everything that makes it so wondrous. I can't believe anyone would suggest such a hideous thing. And yes, my comment is very personal.

The feds agreed with turning 61 into interstate 35 between Wyoming MN and Duluth in 1956 to just consolidate the construction for interstate freeways.
