Resin printing never gets old 😆Often I do mixes of different resins depending on if I need strength or flexibility. Or if I need something perfectly transparent it's just magic - for example if painting something with a transparent part after printing in some transparent resin, just mask off that part as you paint the rest, then apply a clear coat on the transparent part (a UV protective one will help it last much longer). Perfectly see-through and glossy. Of course sanding it first will get better results, but for miniatures it isn't always necessary. Quick tip: I do recommend using the wash & cure machine for the washing as well, it is easier with IPA (90%+ for best, but I use 70% since it's easily available). Unless you're using water washable resin I wouldn't recommend washing with water before curing unless it goes to a specified waste disposal due to toxic resin potentially leeching out from the cleaning waste. After curing it should be fine to do anything!
@esotabletop Жыл бұрын
At what point in the process do you recommend removing the supports. At the start, after washing or after curing?
@WolfwithSword Жыл бұрын
@@esotabletop I find it is easier and has a lesser chance of damage to the model if done before curing. Doing it after the wash can be cleaner/safer too, but if its only a few supports it doesn't make a difference to do it before! It can still be done after curing, just depends on how careful you are and what seems good for your process. Also, if supports are really a pain to remove, after washing & air drying if you use a heatgun briefly (or after curing if it's really a pain, soaking in hot water) can make them easier to remove.
@mitchcameron Жыл бұрын
What resins do you use for strength out of curiosity?
@WolfwithSword Жыл бұрын
@@mitchcameron sirayatech blu or any engineering-grade for raw strength, but anything "tough" or semi flexible does well too. ABS-Likes are my usual go-to. It can be fragile but it's also way above standard resins. At those points it depends on what the model geometry is like. Also you can mix the resins, so a small bit of blu or some tough resin with an ABS-Like and it's miles better and not too expensive then.

Awesome video man! How many troops would you be able to print at once? Lol how long would it take you think to print your own 2000 point fantasy army?
@esotabletop Жыл бұрын
I could print about 8 troops for $2 in 2-4 hours (the amount depends on their weapons and how the printable files are laid out). If you had a printer constantly running you could quite easily have a full army in a full week of production I suppose. It would ultimately be a time/cost comparison compared to GWs official products. Obviously theirs also a stupid amount of options for 3d prints out their too.
@TheStonehammerFiles Жыл бұрын
@@esotabletop Battle Brother Sam has done that comparison already Excluding the initial costs to get started for the average person, printing minis is around 3 to 5 LESS than GW models. I can print a bretonnian knight of foot for around 10-20 cents US but that does not include the time I spent in the slicer, if I add in that even at a livable wage, $5 US max. Same price two Knight Errants were back in the early 2000s.

It's not such a huge problem as there is a lot of different creators who keep releasing similiar stuff all the time but in different flavours. You are deluding yourself. Most people who print their mini dont do it because they can't find a specific model. They do it because they dont want to pay GW, the mini shortage is just an excuse. 90% of the model available for prints are readily available at my B&M store. If GW sold models, people wouldnt want to pay for them either and would just torrent them. That being said, GW makes more profit out of their IP sales (for games) than miniatures so maybe it could still be viable for them.

People always think their designs are better than GWs. The truth simply is: they are not. Heroic scale is designed to be compact and comical, because it suits the dimensions better. Implementing designs that are too realistic ruin the aesthetic.
@esotabletop Жыл бұрын
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Obviously a cohesive army designed by one company will have a more unifying astatic, weather or not it is from gw.
@johnoneill3654 Жыл бұрын
Actually heroic scale was originally brought in for wargaming to make them more sturdy for when handled and moved around and easier to paint larger hands and heads. A lot of model makers do this for wargames. Doesn't stop people using truescale or preferring truescale from an aesthetic pov. Each to their own. No company should have final say over how someone prefers their models or enjoys their wargames.
