I use to drive a fuel tanker truck out of Bakersfield to the LA harbor.... I'm retired now living in Oklahoma and man I love the ride but the traffic is way crazy.... I have literally been over the grapevine hundreds of times.... Thanks again for the memories!!!!!!!!!!! 😎😎😎👍👍👍🌠🌠🌠

+luvcarsgay The descent into Central Valley is very reminiscent of the Mountain Pass along I-15 (approaching CA and NV state line), only at a steeper grade! That part is always a thrill to ride. Btw, planning to redo this one day, since this one was captured with a cell phone.

+American Roads Mountain Pass on I-15 is like that, and if I remember right, the individual passes on I-8 just east of the San Diego/Imperial County line (each carriage uses a different pass, due to the mountainous terrain, which results in separation of up to 1.5 miles between the carriages of I-8) are also like that. EB I-8 uses one pass to descend into the Imperial Valley and WB I-8 ascends into the mountains using a different pass.

i find it interesting that the 5 turns into the 99 and you have to take an exit to keep going on the 5

That's because originally, the whole route was part of the 99 and the 5 bypass was built much later.

Interstate 5 is aligned over much of the old U.S. 99 until the location you’re describing. North of that I-5 turn off is all much newer than the 99.

I've never traveled this route, although I've been to Bakersfield. I've heard of Tejon pass many times on weather reports, considering the snowfall that sometimes occurs in the area.

The steep decline at the end of the pass is always fun to drive through. I have never driven the southbound part of the pass though, unfortunately.

This is faster cause you can just take the 99 until ca-120, US 395 in general is a slower highway cause it’s hit a freeway

That drive is best in the late winter when the mountains are all green and theres still a bit of snow on the peaks, also the 58 from Mojave towards Bakersfield.
