My North* has over 200,000 miles, no engine issues. The engine has been great. Keep fresh oil in it, wide open throttle to 6,000 RPMs to blow out any carbon deposits, and routinely replace the water pump and thermostat every 60,000 miles.

I appreciate Hoovie videos for buying very old/great for their era cars and showing us what can be wrong with them, because many of us long to own them as toys but don’t realize how much of a money pit one can be. But, I don’t appreciate Hoovie judging them against modern day standards, doesn’t make sense to take them outta context and hyper criticize them when they usually were very desired cars in their day.

As shitty as Northstar's are, they aren't known for needing oil pumps or losing oil pressure, so if it isn't knocking then it's more likely the sensor that monitors oil pressure.

@@corionh4775 Most sensors will not report a low reading when failing, they will usually report no pressure. I suspect worn main bearings. But I suspect we will find out soon.

@corionh4775 4 жыл бұрын
@@InFiD3ViL1 These cars have digital message centers in the instrument cluster that will only say "low oil pressure", they wont say "no" oil pressure under any circumstance (unless you meant low oil level, which these engines have a separate sensor for). Most oil pressure sensors/switches/sending units in cars give false readings showing low/no oil pressure or excessive oil pressure when failing. Ultimately these engines don't have that reputation so it's likely just the sending unit. But yeah we'll see in an update video.
@dave1135
@dave1135 4 жыл бұрын
I worked at a GM dealership as a auto tech. Every one of these with the north star and low oil pressure light it ended up being excessive clearance on the #1 crank journal. Gm's fix was to use plastic gauge and measure the clearance. You checked the minimum and maximum clearance and subtracted your measurement. You went to parts and got the repair kit that had the correct oversize bearing. You installed it, checked clearance again. If ok, reinstall the pan and ship it

My 1980 Toyota Corolla SR5 had that box quality, and it was evocative of a preppy business squareness that emerged. It was a cold period of time for style that continued for a while until the emergence of Miata, 1990 Celica, 1992 Camry, and Previa.

Terry Hesticles I have an adult child. And NO! a parent’s responsibility is NOT to provide a future. A future is yours to make yourself. That’s a VERY entitled way to think. My child knows this that nothing is given free and nothing is owed.
@One-Crazy-Cat
@One-Crazy-Cat 4 жыл бұрын
Terry Hesticles again if a child is raised right and not an entitled millennial brat they won’t expect freebies and handouts their entire lives. That is the definition of entitlement mentality. I feel bad that you were not raised to be independent and self sufficient as that’s a life skill. As your generation says “achievement not earned”. We hear it in press as “failing to launch” I know my son feel the best I passed on to him is how to be self sufficient. I see many millennials break down and crawl back to mommies n daddies first time something gets hard. I wouldn’t buy an expensive watch I would convert that to investment. An expensive watch is to impress people you don’t know and don’t like anyway. Real estate is much better long term investment. I never was the Cadillac kind myself. But then again the poorest people in the world tend to buy expensive watches and designer labels. I buy Walmart and invest. Look up Warren Buffett as he buys Walmart clothes and timex watches as well. Henry Ford said you could take his business and burn his buildings but he would be right back again...why? He had the self sufficient skills not an expensive watch. You have a bit learning to do in life son.

Greetings from Abu Dhabi, UAE. I was saddened to learn you sold off that wonderful classic Chrysler/Imperial convertible as I was really looking forward to more adventures with you and it. Do us all a big favor and rid yourself of one of the Allantes and get an XLR. I had one a few years back and was delighted with it until my local Caddy dealer started messing with it trying to fix the roof (luckily you have Car Wizard-can he be cloned and shared with the world?). I really enjoy your automotive adventures and look forward to each new episode.

Some Toyota 4 cylinder engines had that problem too; where the cylinder head contracted and expanded, until the cylinder head forced the hard head bolts to pull the threads meant for them on the soft aluminum block, thence blowing the head gasket. I had to use a Time-Sert threaded bushings kit for my mother’s 2002 Toyota Camry. The same could be done to those NorthStar engines. However, It is recommended to use a stud kit for the cylinder heads, rather than head bolts on those NorthStars.

Minus the head bolt issues, the Northstar V8 is a pretty good engine. It had good power and MPG for the time. The later 2004+ Northstar engines finally solved the headbolt issues by using headbolts from the LS engines. Those have proven to be fairly reliable.

In 1997 I bought a 1 owner, 1990 with 40k miles. It was mint and included the removable hard top. A year later, a guy blew a red light, got hit and spun right into my front end. An entire new front end had to be imported from Italy. It was never the same and a few months later, I got rid of it for less than half what I paid for it. I still miss that car.

My dad had an '89. I got to drive it a few times. Still convinced the suspension was made of marshmallows. Attempts to have fun with the loud pedal resulted in the primitive traction control coming down like a sledge hammer. But there was a way around it.....there was a wire loop that went through the spare tire that you had to unhook if you needed the spare. This wire was for disabling the traction control completely. With that wire disconnected you could smoke the sh*t out of the tires!!

I had the opportunity to buy a '93 with "only" 60+k miles, an surprisingly, everything worked, an was near immaculate. The dealership where I worked gave it's employees "at cost" prices if the car you were interested in was still on the lot after 90 days, an this particular Alante' nearly celebrated it's first birthday at the lot, so I believe I could have had it for less than $5k if I remember. Only reason I didn't pull the trigger is that I (like MANY people) knew that the Northstar was just itching to blow a head gasket at any time, though it was near flawless at the time I was looking at it. I just knew that even if I'd spent $3000, it would need twice that in repairs in the first year or two, so I passed. I actually love the looks of the car an the interior, but I was in no position to have it as my every day driver knowing the money pit these can become quickly.

These cars are famous because J.R. Ewing drove one, Tommy Gunn drove one in Rocky V, Kelley Bundy did the Bundy Bounce for an ad, and Also featured in the Movie "Cadillac Man". These N*s are fantastic engines and will last a long time with timely coolant exchange services and regular oil changes. This car evolved into the XLR and still featured a Northstar V8 with up to 449 or 469hp. Not bad engines at all.
