About Cougar "freaking out" after the encounter with the enemy planes--- It was *extremely* rare that US pilots engaged with enemy aircraft after the Vietnam War, so Cougar had probably never been in this situation his entire career. Unfortunately you can never truly know how you are going to handle it until you actually go through it. So for the 1st time in his life, he was in a situation where he could have been killed, and barely got out of it by the skin of his teeth. He couldn't handle it and had a panic attack afterwards. Think of it like a guy who trains in Martial Arts his entire life, but freezes when someone robs him at gunpoint because it's the real thing this time and he's never had a gun shoved in his face. And then has PTSD afterwards.

@JedHead77 - true. And a lot of that behaviour is reall too... A bit exaggerated in the movie of course. But it is not "childish" in anyway. Some may see that, and I get it too. But at the end those kind of guys/professionals, at that level, yeah - they are driven by the ego too, and they know their own abilities...and they better be/do. Ego included, and also being part of the larger team. It is a part of what is making them the best at what they are doing. In any profession really, if you look deep enough. And at the top level, any job , top of your field, after 15+ years of working at the top - yeah, you will meet some really "strange" people. And this is not a negative. No. Far from it. Some of that behaviour, attitude - is exactly what has brought them to the top level. And stay there. A lot of them are not a "social creatures" too. And that is OK too. As long as they are doing their jobs, and at the top level of any field... I'm cool with it :)

RE: Cougar, they were not just flying around happily near some other planes. They were on the battlefield with a longstanding enemy (at that time, "at peace", but the cold war was never quite peace) That enemy painted Cougar and his wingman with a sniper rifle's laser pointer and wiggled it back and forth for 30 seconds. Focus: photo of wife and child. Result: Combat trauma.

Not only did he get in trouble the 1st day, he got in trouble for flying below the Hard Deck. That's a major safety violation, since the Hard Deck is a simulation for Ground Level to give pilots a buffer zone above the actual ground. So, by flying under the Hard Deck to get a lock on Jester, he essentially was flying underground (meaning for the purposes of the simulation, Goose and Maverick were dead, a the target lock on Jester didn't count).

Love the stories fighter pilots have about the Top Gun instructors. They get there thinking they're hot shit, understandably, since they're the top pilot of either army, navy, airforce or marines. Then they have a duel against an instructor and realize they are so far behind they don't even have the vocabulary to explain how they got shot down :). Maverick didn't win his first duel, he flew into the ground if it'd been a real fight.

"Maverick" may sound like a cool callsign, but the definition/synonyms of _maverick_ are independent, nonconformist, unorthodox, etc. The types of things the military frowns on. So Maverick earned his callsign by being a loose cannon - something you don't want in a fighter pilot. He's called Maverick because he's everything they don't want him to be.

When I was in the military, I used to load weapons on planes. We were at Red Flag an air combat exercise and the plane I worked on was really old but was more known for getting shot down every combat sortie. This combat exercise takes place in Las Vegas so that's one big reason why everyone likes going. Well, I get off work loading weapons and I get back to the hotel, I am in the elevator and a bunch of the pilots that flew the planes I worked on got in and started talking about getting a kill. I said congrats on your kill I work on your planes, one of them smiled, stuck his hand in the air and gave me a high five.... then said, yeah, he pretty much flew right in front of me... we all busted up laughing. It was fun because the pilots are high on everything when in the air and it's hard for them to come back down to reality after a combat exercise so, them been cool with me was very rare for pilots. For the rest of the few weeks in the combat exercise they find me each day on the flightline loading weapons and always came over to say hi, I would say "Good hunting", they loved it, lots of fun that deployment.

If you are wondering why Cougar freaked out so bad. The sound of being locked on is the equivalent of having a loader fun held to your face. You are as good as dead if they fire and some people don't bounce back right away. You nailed an issue with this movie that no one really talks about, that being the accident that caused Goose's death was more Iceman fault than anyone if you think about it. Here you have a guy that is always going off about the rules and is known to be cool and calculating but it was his frustration and completive nature that triggered the accident. I mean everyone was telling him to "get out of there" but he wanted to win so bad he was acting like Maverick. Once he realized that he couldn't get the shot he pulled off in anger. At his level of skill and knowledge he should have been aware of the danger his jet wash could create but he made a mistake out of arrogance. Sure Maverick needed the wake up call and he should feel guilty so it was good for the story but I feel that this was a lost opportunity for Iceman character growth. I love this movie.

You were smart to watch this first. Perfect way to do it. 👍🏻 It’s weird how many people interpret the guys little stand offs as flirty. I don’t think we saw it like that back then. People were not as violent in the 80’s and more capable of controlling emotions. ESPECIALLY guys like these. It’s not about beating each other up or making threats it was kinda like intimidation just through presence. It was about who was gonna flinch or blink or back away being uncomfortable nearly nose to nose. Now it’s flaring nostrils, puffed up chests and talking louder than the other guy. You don’t even have to make sense, just drown them out. It used to be about having nerves of steel…. Now it’s seeing what you can steal to get on someone’s nerves.

Goose's death was based on a handful of real events on the original F-14A. To save money on manufacturing costs, the F-14 used engines were taken from an earlier fighter jet that had never been intended for dogfights, and so the fatal flaw of interrupted airflow causing a compressor stall, leading to the flameout, was only discovered after it started causing crashed. The biggest problem was the flat spin the F-14s found themselves in would lead to an area of low pressure just above the plane, meaning the canopy never separated in the way intended, and the ejecting pilots could smash into them. It claimed a few lives before they re-wrote the manual on how to deal with the flameouts.

The TF30 engines were designed for the F-111B which was a multi role fighter bomber. In the 1960s, US Defense Secretary Robert McNamara forced the Navy to participate in the USAF’s TFX (Tactical Fighter Experimental) competition to reduce development costs. This would be General Dynamics F-111 which was was terrible for carriers and the F-11B was dropped for the Gruman F-14 in 1968. Pratt and Whitney which had the engine contract already had the TF30 engines but yes they were not designed for some of the high intense angles a fighter jet performed but they did have power. The Navy had insisted on its own fighter jet so the F-14 would be developed with the TF30 engines. No sooner did the first first F-14 took off in 1970 the Navy asked for an upgrade. This would be the F-14B but the Pratt Whitney engine F-100 failed its tests so any chance of upgrading the exiting F-14s or a new F-14B was put on hold in 1974. It was not till 1979 when General Electrics designed the new F-101 for the B-1 which was later canceled. In 1984 with some changes General Electrics wins the contract for the new engine upgrade the F-110 Engine. The new F-14Ds and upgrades to the F-14 fleet would not begin till then 1987. So had Maverick and Goose flew a little later Goose would still be alive. Your right in an attempt to reduce costs they went with the TF30 engines it was not to reduce manufacturing but development costs. The navy by 1970s was already looking to upgrade. When the F-14 was in development the only engine was the TF30. No others were ready yet and Pratt's & Whitney new engine failed which is what the Navy wanted to upgrade to. So it was either no F-14 or the F-14 they got in the 1970s.

I can relate to "Couger" not because of being locked on to a radar guided missile (which is the only time you would get that alarm Heat seeker you have to look for the trail as it comes off the enemy fighter) but due to a bad Carrier landing. I came in way to low and came a second away from killing not only myself but several other crewmembers on the flight deck. Like you saw with "Mavrick" I had to go back around a few times take a few deep breaths get myself under control and land on the deck. I did not quit from flight status because of it.

This movie is incredible, and the 2nd one was just amazing. It was good enough to make my step mom (in her 60s), my real mom in her 70sn and my dad in his mid-70s brave the crowds at the cinema to go see it in person. I treated them as none of them had ever seen a movie on an IMAX screen before and they are still talking about to this day..... and we saw the movie the weekend after Memorial Day. It's phenomenal, and goes to show you that when there are good characters, people buy into the story, actors enjoy working together and buy into the "process", it doesn't have to be 4 trillion dollars worth of CGI to make a blockbuster. Both films are amazing and I coukd very easily with either of them o er and over. Thus is a Hollywood blockbuster done right, so the formula is out there..... and it didn't involve superheroes to get it to $1 billion+.

you have to understand the ethos of being a fighter pilot - in WWI the average pilot survived 11 days - in the Battle of Britain it was four weeks - after graduating from a class of 32 in my day- within five years three were killed - it was dangerous and is still dangerous

I used to be one of those guys on the flight deck in a green shirt. In my case, USS Nimitz. I operated the equipment that the wires are attached to that actually stop the aircraft when they land. Fighter pilots are the cockiest bastards you will ever meet. They're not necessarily jerks, but there's no question about their self confidence. You HAVE to have that attitude to do the job they do. They were always cool with us tho. Probably because we operated the equipment that ensures they can land safely.

I still prefer this one to Maverick, although it's close. I think it might be Tony Scott directing and the cinematography, there's such a gritty feel to this movie despite some of the cheese. Maverick is really well made but feels too 'clean' and the ending feels a bit off, like it was being reverential instead of realistic.

“That was loud”. That is the sound of an aircraft carrier’s catapult - a high powered piston designed to launch aircraft from 0-175mph in 2 seconds. Think of a balloon pooping, the bang is the sound of air escaping at high velocity. That’s how the piston works. Steam is released at high velocity along a channel, it makes a bang (air travelling faster than the speed of sound, breaking the sound barrier), as it escapes through that channel it pushes the “shuttle”, which the plane’s nose wheel is hooked onto, propelling it to the edge of the deck and sending the plane off the front. Thrust and kinetic transfer from the catapult allows the plane to generate the lift required to get airborne - think of it as a real fast rollercoaster. Cougar freaking out is because he realised he could’ve died and left his newborn child fatherless, and his wife would have to bring up their child alone. It’s considered a bad landing - there are 4 “wires” on a carrier deck that a plane can hook. Number 3 is the target wire, 2 is acceptable. 1 is “any lower and you’re crashing into the back of the boat”, and 4 is “any higher and you’re going off the front of the boat and into the water”. Cougar was too low and hooked number 1. The bar scene - Now, I’ve seen this film probably a thousand times, and I didn’t realise this until I saw someone else point it out recently - when they do their karaoke bit, Maverick is not wearing his shades, but Goose is. When they attend their first brief and Charlie is introduced, Maverick puts on his shades, and Goose takes his off. Not that she wouldn’t already know who they are as they are her students, but it’s the attention to such small detail that I had never noticed before. “I think I prefer Goose to Maverick”… that’s gonna hurt later. “Maverick does what he wants”. I guess you could say he’s a bit of a… Maverick 😎 “Maybe Goose dies” whoa! Nobody ever calls that. 19:50 yes, you called it. “They really love this song” Take My Breath Away was written for the soundtrack, as was Danger Zone and Playing With The Boys by Kenny Loggins. The science behind Goose’s death - F-14A models were fitted with TF30 engines, these engines were notorious for stalling. The design of the F-14, with the amount of separation between the engines, if one of them fails you end up with asymmetrical thrust, with other engine pushing one side of the plane forward ahead of the other, causing it flat spin. These are very difficult to recover from, to the point that the crew will almost always choose to eject. Now comes another problem. Flat spinning creates a zero pressure area over the top of the plane. This causes the canopy to however over the cockpit after it is jettisoned in the ejection sequence (it’s a rapid three-stage sequence: canopy>RIO seat>pilot seat, all in the space of 1 second). This means it is now obstructing the seats as they eject, and as the RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) seat ejects half a second before the pilot, Goose is now being rocket propelled head first into the canopy… official cause of death is a broken neck. This issue was eventually addressed and an emergency canopy jettison was added separate to the ejection to avoid the canopy hover. They also upgraded the engines for the B and D (they skipped C for some reason 🤷🏻‍♂️) models to the more reliable F110. “Maverick just quit” “Did he? Oh was he packing his locker?” Yes, you caught on. You’re only the second reactor that I’ve seen that has caught that. “Top Gun is this old film”… hold up a second, it came out the year before I was born, and I ain’t about to be called “old”! Top Gun trivia: The opening scene was filmed aboard the carrier USS Enterprise, the scene is lit naturally by the sunrise. Enterprise was on operational duty and had to follow a charted course, this course meant that the lost the sunrise from the shot. Director Tony Scott requested that the ship alter course to keep the lighting, but was told by the ship Commander that it would cost $25k to do so. Scott pulled out his personal chequebook and wrote one out on the spot, and got his shot for about 5 more minutes. In a later interview he claimed that he made sure the cheque bounced 😂 The flat spin scene on screen was tragic as we lost Goose, but it was also tragic in real life. Art Scholl, an aerial stunt cameraman, lost control of his camera plane and plunged into to Pacific Ocean… neither his plane or his body were ever recovered. At the end of the credits there is a message “dedicated to the memory of Art Scholl”. The scene at the end when Charlie returns to see Maverick… Tom Cruise is 5ft 7in, Kelly McGillis is 5ft 10in. In order to make it look like she is shorter than him, they dug out a shallow trench in the floor her to stand in. The dogfight sequence at the end briefly got Paramount and Tony Scott in a bit of hot water, the Department of Defence permitted the firing of no more than 2 missiles. Through the power of multiple camera angles and editing, they made it look like more than 2 missiles were fired, leading to the DoD launching an investigation. The conclusion was that indeed only 2 missiles were fired (they ain’t cheap you know). Top Gun is indeed a real school, not exactly as depicted in the film (it’s not a competition, there is no trophy), but it is used for advanced combat training techniques. There’s a rule in place that anyone who quotes the film shall be fined $5 😂 Now a little bit of fun. Real world violations within this film: 1. Cougar with an obstruction on his instrument panel. (The photo of his family) 2. Maverick disobeying the order to land his plane on low fuel. 3. Maverick riding alongside a runway on a motorcycle. 4. Riding said motorcycle without a helmet. 5. disrespectful and condescending behaviour towards the instructor. 6. Breaking, and engaging under, the “hard deck” (simulated ground level… they crashed into the simulated ground!). 7. High speed fly-by over the Air Boss. 8. Initiating an intimate relationship with an instructor. 9. Desertion. (Ok he re-engaged, but still… desertion) 10. High speed fly-by over the Air Boss. Also, littering in the ocean 😂
