It is nice to actually hear what the Ugaritic texts say. Heard about them in an archeology class, but never got the content. I felt it was kept vague to put down scripture.

I always found that strange in my theology classes, we never got into the weeds, but just talked about what something said. Going back I have taken the time read some of the works and people we talked about in my Early Church history classes etc.. and found a trove of information that was not touched upon or skipped over. Why I don't know, but some of it flys in the face of the reformers and modern thought. Now I tend to not trust someone else's synopsis and if I find what they're saying interesting I just read the source material for myself.. it was nice to have it actually covered in detail and not just paraphrased.

Very helpful. In addition to helping us understand the cultural context of the Hebrews, it seems clear to me that this story is a mythological recounting of a traumatic event. No people left? Long periods of famine? What does that sound like? Maybe the Younger Dryas, though the Levant actually seems to have had it relatively good during that time. Possibly the Last Glacial Maximum. Maybe something as recent as the so-called 8.2 kiloyear event. Anyway, it was clearly an experience so profound that it was important for everyone to remember it in perpetuity.

Understanding the context to which the biblical text arose from is so important for understanding the significance of the message as well as understanding the perspective of the descendants of Israel. Understanding the even more ancient Sumerian myths is also informative. All these stories are remnants of the antediluvian lived experience of our ancient ancestors. The picture is obscured due to the failing memory of men, but the message of mankind's fall from grace and subsequent destruction is undeniable.

i respectfully submit that we have a lot of emerging data that shows strong potential for reality to be far more complex and dynamic then is academically accepted. Even to the point that "gods' and even God may well exist. Here are a few of the reasons i could not become an atheist. There is a lot of emerging data and science that God and the spiritual realm are in some way real. 1000s of Near Death Experiences have been researched and studied. Out of body experiences. Groups of people using DMT have had mass "hallucinations" of the same entities, giving the same message. We know there are other realities out there and likely higher dimensions. If you pay attention to the problems in science. You start to see how little we know. Anti-matter, quantum entanglement, double slit experiment. All show there is much more out there then we understand. Dark matter and dark energy make up a huge amount of the math in astro physics. The dark is their clever word for "we don't know, but want to pretend that we are not completely lost on this". Culturally speaking. We have enough Science fiction. That if we can imagine ourselves reaching out to other worlds. Why would we expect the same can't be done to ours and too us. We create video games full of vibrant worlds. We imagine ourselves terraforming other worlds. We are currently pushing biological manipulation. Emergent endeavors like nano tech and bio mechanical nano tech. As well as molecular manufacturing. Mean it is within our sight to be able to create environments and realities similar to the stories of ancient cultures. As far as my personal exploration. While there are many differences from religion to religion. There are also many similarities. Why would we not expect higher entities to compete with each other. To have egos. To tell lies. Many religions have the gods only providing if they themselves are provided for. The Bible set up standards and practices that lead to the best average life, for individual and society; throughout multiple generations. This ideal is very rare.

This was an interesting take on things. I did notice a few issues with your understanding. For example, Asherah was called the Tree of Life. She is where we get the term in the Bible because the early Hebrews use to also worship Asherah. Often, you refer to God as Yaweh, however the texts you cited never called God Yaweh but rather El or Elohim. The Hebrews used to worship the violent, youthful war god Yaweh and then adopted the older god of laws, love, creation, and order...El. Even in Psalms, where Yaweh is referred to, it is El-Yaweh. What is more specifically loved is how this story is very similar to Thor and his battle with the world serpent. This story is prevalent all across the globe. Even with truly monotheistic groups (not like the pseudo-monothesitic Hebrews) you see a clash not between gods but great creatures...like the Cherokee story of the Tlanuwah (giant man-devouring red and black hawk) destroying the Uktena (giant water dragon). Naturally, as Hebrew culture has always done, they'll shift their beliefs to match the beliefs of their oppressors. This is where Y'shua would say something in John 10:34 that even Christians deny to this day...we all are ultimately as gods by the Creator. How powerful and empowering a message that even the Hebrews of the day knew to be true. Yet, today, the heralds of the harlot on the serpent refuses this truth.

A dying and rising god in Canaan... hundreds of years before the Romans showed up. Even before the Greeks. But I'm sure some in the comments will still insist that somehow this proves another story about a supposedly rising demigod. Also, Disciple... it's clear you want one text to be of a fundamentally different nature than the other, but what criteria can we actually apply to ancient texts to determine which of these entities are real and which are just literature? When the Song of Hannah or Song of the Sea talks about Yahweh the man of war who will blow away his enemies with breath from his nostril... how are we not in the exact same genre as these Baal stories? How is that magic real, but every other story of magic is fake? Just because one is more familiar?
