I love hearing and seeing how happy you are when you set up stuff like this, it really shows how much you enjoy the fish and how much you care about them, especially all the time you put into making sure they will have a good place to live. The setup looks awesome, I can't wait to see it in full bloom once the moss has grown out and the fish are showing their colors, it'll be amazing.

Explanation for the schooling behaviour: Fish can't see red light (since it is usually filtered out by the water (this is also the reason the sea is blue)), so when you only have red light, they can't see anything and think it's night time and school for safety.
@NeverSeb

By red light they hide. Because in nature the sunset means, that night is comming. And with the night the predetors are comming too.

For wild fish at least, probably the same for your babies, the red light making them all go to one side, it's a schooling and protection reaction. Red = night, and that's usually when predators come out. So they go into a tight ball for protection. During the day, there are fewer predators hunting them, they can see very clearly, and so on. In and around the wood they cannot school safely, it's easier for an individual to be picked off. This also can be a hunting technique as well, where they get together in a tighter formation. When a school of fish is also in a tight ball, they look MUCH bigger to predators, and can ward off the potential predator by becoming a mass that is too big to attempt to nibble. Any one of these behaviours, or even all, could be what your Rainbows are doing.

To react like that, they must school at night to sleep. Most critters don't see red. They just think it's night :) That looks fantastic! Great work!

Lots of fish can't see red spectrum, hence responding in a similar way to no lights on. Best way to check for unwanted critters in a reef tank is to phase a red period into the night time cycle. Looks awesome dude
@alexmoody9259

Maybe something to do with the shorter wave length of the spectrum towards the red end. It's likely that red also can't penetrate very deeply in to water.

For those wondering about the red light thing. Most fish cannot see red light so to them it would be the same as it being completely dark which causes them to think it is night where they school up for safety

the reason they school in the red light is because it imitates night time. Most fish cannot see red light so its a way many people get to watch their fish act as if it were night.

If they are anything like certain insects like ants. They cannot see red light. So it would be pitch black to the fish. Maybe since they think its night its a defensive mechanism to stay safe and together since its dark to them.

For ants if you place clear plastic over them so the light that shines through turns red. They still believe its dark and continue to work as if its dark. Take it away and they disperse to darker areas (When dealing with a colony). A good test would be see how they react with little to no light as well I suppose. Could be similar.

Many species of fish in both fresh and salt water have eyes which are incapable of seeing the red spectrum of light. So when joey changed the light to only shine with the red spectrum, the fish no longer saw any light and likely thought it was now night time. I assume that they naturally School together at night in the wild so when the fish stopped seeing light they simply did what they would naturally do. You could test this by turning the light off all together and you will likely see the same reaction as with only the red spectrum. Very nice tank though joey, I'm excited to watch those babies color up.
@UberAlphaSirus
@UberAlphaSirus 7 жыл бұрын
That makes common sense to me but the scientific mind makes ponder. If the males of this species show off to the girls with red. Does that mean the girls want a dark room to get together to talk about stuff and don't actually notice the male, in this case the male has now become invisible and created his own black hole to do his bidding, Or does the red skin/scales flourese another spectrum to make the girls notice?
@4sak3nmage1
@4sak3nmage1 7 жыл бұрын
I think they might be reacting like that because of mating behavior. They see a very bright red, it and are attracted to the each other naturally, also most fish mate in the early morning where the lighting is softer, red is a much softer frequency light than white/green/blue.

Definitely should turn off the lights in the tank for the first few hours or so after introducing the fish to the new habitat. Reduces stress.
@mattheweason532
@mattheweason532 7 жыл бұрын
Love the tank. Rainbows are one of my alltime favorites. As for your red light question.. I have seen many different reasons in the comments from stress to cant see red( they can and very well).. its an anti-predation mechanism. Throughout the Rainbows native range most predatory fish are crepuscular and are most actively hunting at dusk and dawn when the visable light spectrum ranges between 460-700nm due to scattering of VIB light during these times. Yes thee ol' safety in numbers is at play.

The reason they did that when you only had the red light is because they can't see red lights like most animals so they go defensive as they are unable to see predators. You will see them do the same as all lights turns off.

Red light has the largest wave length compared to other colours, so perhaps the fish can't see the red light? If so, they would assume it's dark, making them instinctively huddle in groups for protection. Sounds reasonable, but I don't know for sure. Anybody know how far up the visible light spectrum fish can see?

I'm a beginner with a 29 gallon, I have 2 Dalmatian Mollies, 2 Neon Tetras, 4 balloon Mollies, 2 blue ram chichlids, 4 multi colored guppies and 2 golden snails .... and I am COMPLETELY in love with all of them, doing my best to make sure I give them a good life. A few pretty snails would compliment your tank a lot but I have hear stories of them multiplying and ruining filters before. I hope I dont end up with that problem having a somewhat smaller tank. Anyways, enjoy your little guys... I'll be subscribing for updates 😊❤✌

I guess they have the same subconscious feeling for colors as we do. Probably the red water reminds them of a bloodbath when an attack has happened by a foe. So, of course, they look for safety. I do not understand why your aquarium lights come up with this feature since it seems pointless for the fish or even make them panic...
