My sister got her rabbit when she turned 6, but grew out of him very soon after, so his situation was very similar with my parents looking after him in her stead (the bare minimum) and i kind of forgot that he existed for a while, until i saw him and started feeling so incredibly bad for him. He was an outdoor rabbit (which he preferred) and lived outside during summer and in the garage in the winter. He lived in one of those petstore cages while he was inside, so i bought a pen and cleared out a huge part of the garage for him to roam in. He got fresh veggies everyday, and when the weather was nice he would lay out basking in the sun, finally living his best life. We had him for a total of 8 years, and he passed away peacefully while sunbathing in the grass. He was also a Lionhead rabbit so this really hit home for me😢

He loves the little guy my son has, but my son and I both take care of him. My partner already has me, our kid, our geriatric kitty and he ended up mostly willingly taking on a bunch of the snake duties regarding electricity and any of the enclosure scapeing that didn't work when I did it the first time (it's bioactive and Sans, that's the snakes name, he's a blue eyed leucistic ball python, decided to make his way under the mesh and mix the substrate and drainage together like the absolute character he is.) My son does the daily care of adjusting and maintaining water duties as well as spot cleaning poop and urates. He also defrosts the rats and turns the lights on and off twice every day. I do what ever water and cleaning I can, I am the primary socializer (I snuggle him every day he isn't shedding or pooping) and I do the actual feeding most of the time as Sans seems to more often take it when I'm the one feeding. My kid does feed him when he's on a good eating streak though. It is his responsibility but we're not jerks and help him out when we're walking by his room and go in to say hi to the little string-on-a-log.

WHY RESCUES ARE IMPORTANT: I had a friend in school who was one of my best friends for at least 2 years and one time she said “wanna go see my show rabbits” and I of course was like hell yeah! We went and saw them and they were very healthy and kept well but as we were walking back to the house I saw a small rusty hamster cage sitting on a table with the saddest most neglected rabbit ever. I convinced her to bring the cage inside so the rabbit was not exposed to the rough Minnesota winter. No food in sight, no hay, a disgusting water bottle with brown dirty water bottle. It had a cage with no bottom. Feet right on the grates. It had infected and deformed feet, eye infections, ear infections, was terrified of humans. It’s like they dumbed her outside cuz she wants a good show rabbit and just forgot about her. I obviously tried to take the rabbit in but she was stubborn and said it was okay. I still wonder if that rabbits life ever hit better or if they lived out there life in that horrible rusty cage. Remember there is no shame in surrendering an animal. Sometimes life gets in the way or you don’t understand the proper way to care for them/were unprepared. Do what’s best for the animal.
@denise426310 ай бұрын
Your compassion and understanding for the owner is awesome. When I was 19 (I’m almost 40 now) I was gifted a guinea pig for Christmas, I had no clue how to properly care for her. I unintentionally neglected her. I was “too busy” to love her 😞 she didn’t have proper food, or a proper cage setup. I honestly didn’t even see how I was treating her. Then one day I realized that if I kept her she would die, thankfully I was able to rehome her 🙏🏽 It’s always a gift when you can truly learn from your actions… feel the shame… then be gifted another opportunity for do right and be an amazing animal friend owner ❤😊

Those cages from the pet store are actually quite good to have in the case of an emergency. For example when your pet gets sick and needs to be separated from the rest of the group and cannot stay in the same room due to infections. It makes it easier to move the pet for a week or two to a different room. Those cages are also really good for a pet wakes up from surgery or recovers from surgery and is not allowed to move much and needs to be separated for a couple of days from the rest to give the wounds time to heal a bit. It is also good for cleaning as you can clean those cages with nearly any disinfectant and just put it in your tub/shower to clean it after using it. I would always recommend to have one pet store cage for emergencys. But please buy it used, as it would be otherwise so much wasted money.

We've gone through the same stasis experience many times with our older girl and after researching more we learned that one of the best ways to improve their digestion is actually to limit the vegetables. The water in the vegetables can cause them to drink less, and actually become more dehydrated. After switching to feeding her salads with grass and putting her on pellets that are much more natural than the "natural" pellets at pet stores, we've seen such an improvement in her health and even her attitude! I would also recommend you give him more space unless you plan on free roaming him more than once a day. We give our bunnies 2 X-pens together, because they don't have the space to actually zoomie in just 1. They also get larger houses so they can lie down in side with their legs fully extended. :)
@Spidercandy95710 ай бұрын
Can you say more about what your salads are like? And what pellets you’re giving your bun? One of my buns had stasis twice this year (it was like $4,000 combined 😭). I’ve reduced her veggies and switched her pellets to the ones he shows in the video and so far so good! But would love to hear what you’re doing since she seems to be more sensitive.
@ADarkAndSpookyNight10 ай бұрын
@@Spidercandy957 We live out of the city so for salads we normally pick overgrown grass from our yard. I actually had to go through the tough decision of rehoming a LOT of animals. When I was younger I wanted a dog, but my mom refused to have another dog in the house. I tried to compromise with her and said that I’d like a molly fish, which is a very small fish that can thrive in as little as a 20 gallon enclosure. You know what my mom did? She found a deal of someone rehoming a 75 gallon cichlid tank for free. It was my first ever tank. My first ever fish and there was 7 of them. There was lots of trial and error, but thankfully no fish were lost. I researched almost every day with new problems occurring. Easy enough to say, I was addicted FAST. I bought loads more tanks, loads more fish. Before I knew it, I had ten tanks in my room, ranging from a 10gal beta tank to my 75gal cichlid tank. I even ended up convincing my mom to let me get three birds and three lizards on top of it. This was her ideal situation rather than getting me a puppy. I was working a part time job and spent EVERY penny on my animals. My mother helped with obviously paying our now $500 electric bill and helping buy the basic maintenance, but we quickly found out that fish are EXPENSIVE. I ended up getting older and getting a full time job on top of my part time job, leaving me less time to properly care for the loads of animals that I accumulated as a kid. I knew my fish needed better, my attention was running thin and they deserved better. It was hard, but I rehomed every single one, to people with tanks I could only dream of making or affording. I knew they’d be happy, even if I did lose them. With becoming an adult and accumulating lots of bills, my funds for supplies was running low. My mother no longer wanted to help out with me becoming an adult. Two of my birds ended up having five babies, giving me eight birds in total. They were cockatiels and required a lot more sustenance than my dove. Their cage was crowded and I didn’t have the space to provide anything more. I had to make a change in my expenses to afford the TREMENDOUS amount of food they were needing and they went through toys FAST. Bird toys were expensive. I knew this was a bad situation for them, but seeing these babies be born and grow into these singing angels. It was hard for me to let go, but I started to be embarrassed of them. I was embarrassed to show friends and family their situation. I hated seeing them in those conditions every day and it took a toll of my confidence because I knew they needed better. It’s such an awful feeling to know what you have wrong, but know that you couldn’t fix it. I couldn’t find anyone to take them and I was running out of options. I found a rehab six hours away from me and knew the drive would be worth it. Coming home the next day and seeing that empty space in my room was heartbreaking, but it was also relieving. It took away so much stress and I knew it took away stress from them as well. Rehoming is hard, but choosing their happiness is easy.

That cage is micro even for a lionhead which are a smaller species of rabbit, fuck off putting a ferret in that thing. A piggy can get their claws caught in the wires, a ferret can easily escape, and a rabbit has little to no room to run. Rabbits RUN. If you aren't custom building a large hutch, these animals need space. Most cages or habitats from big pet stores are never ideal for the animal they claim to house. The bright neon hamster tubes still give me nightmares.

It’s soooo nice, you gave me a heart attack at first when you had the pet store cage, I was like no way he’s going to use that, just no way.

YOU GAVE ME A HEART ATTACK for the first part😱🤣 I actually thought you would put the bunny in THAT. Thank goodness you didn’t 😅

instead of those shavings that you have for the bunny in his litter box you should get the Carefresh bedding. its so much better

I use the pine pellets and I soak them to make them soft. They absorb water so well that they aren’t wet. Used for my horses too.

At first I knew you were pranking...then you kept going, I was like wait, did he lose his mind? I kept hearing pet stores know everything which was my assurance that you were kidding though. Milo is adorable! I hope he feels better soon! He's got a good Papa that will fix him right up!

Wishing you well, Milo! Gotta say, I'm already hooked on The Pig Room videos after just one. Awesome content, loaded with information. I'm considering guinea pigs or rabbits for first time family pets. I'm really, really excited, and although I've owned many different species of pets throughout my life, I have never owned either. I've been doing research for about two months now, preparing. Tomorrow is a call to the nearest reputable vet, to make sure they have small animals care. I'm excited, and happy to have stumbled across your channel.

My bunny would love all of that stuff omg, she loves chewing and laying on the scratchers, and she hates hardwood floors, watching her drink out of the water fountain is so cute

As a bunny owner for almost a year now I’m so glad you’re going into the bunny gurney!!! One thing I want to address is the full carrot in the cage near the end bunny’s arnt supposed to have a full carrot like that because of all the sugars but can’t wait to see you go threw this gurney!! The poops are defintly not normal either like you said there defintly to small and to smooshy rabbits poops are normally kinda stiff and kind of a powdery substance inside I’m glad you caught that!!!

I recently had to re-home my bun. I got him 2.5 years ago. Long story short I thought about getting a rabbit for a while, I ended up meeting someone that found a bunny. I tried my best but just couldn’t bond with him and found it difficult to keep up with his care. Tried finding a home for 6 months and now he’s at a foster.

yooo i nearly had a heartattack watching you set up the cage until i saw the comments XD we had a similar size cage for the two bunnies we rescued... and we used it as a litterbox and gave them a whole room (technically a whole floor of the house) to run around in XD also while the bunny was kept outside in a hutch, he was still sooo well looked after given the circumstances. I'm still glad he was given the Pig room, and hopefully he can still go outside a lot and have fun!

😂 You had me going for a minute! I was like, "wait... he always says pet stores DON'T know anything." Then when you kept saying how spacious it is and how pet stores know what they are talking about, I was waiting for you to say it was a joke. 😂

We got a bernedoodle puppy and my son was breaking out with hives. We gave him Zyrtec, once a day for 2 weeks and it seems like his body got used to him and we stopped the pills.
@ThePigRoom10 ай бұрын
Yes, that’s what I did! I took Zyrtec for a couple days and I’m now no longer allergic to him. I most definitely had a reaction to all the dust and other things he collect while he was living outside

So happy for you! I had bunnies when I was a child. My dad made a hutch, but it was big and spacious and we had them in a huge enclosure with so much grass and it was like a mini field by our greenhouse. Taking care is a commitment and it's hard. When we got ours, we thought they were two females. Haha, wrong! Two, became.... yeah, it was a lot and the hard thing was, one got an illness and it was something that spread quickly and it was sad, and helpless as we couldn't do anything at that time. So much is learned now about exotic pets and I am happy for your journey. He's beautiful and I was dying when you started off with that pet store cage as that is the one they tried to sell me when I got my skinny Harriet. She was alone for two months and was not looking good...I had to get her out of that tank!

You can use the bottom of the cage as a Litter box I found it works wonders as a litter box.

My bunnies outside. Two bonded adopted pairs, all four are fixed and insured. Each have around 1600 square feet. Around the whole 3200 square feet we have electric wires top and bottom to keep baddies out. Lots of houses, tunnels, sand boxes and things to do. They have a network of tunnels underground as well! As long as they have lots of space to move they can stay warm easier, also their house should be dry and draft free.

Hey Austin!!! Been watching you for so long even though I only have a bunny and no piggies, but yay!! you have milo now!!! I realized you gave him a whole carrot and lots of pellets on the food bowl, just a rule of thumb carrots or any fruits, one tiny slice is plenty for buns!! And less than a 1/4 cup of pellets a daily is more than enough!

Sounds to me that the parents of Eva did a lot for the bunny 🐰
@eva_marie14511 ай бұрын
They really really did. For the two years after I moved out they did their absolute best with what they had and I'm grateful. Even more grateful to have found a better home now with Austin
