Mr Loo gives a lot to his children by providing guidance & mentorship in their life/career. He is teaching the children how to fish rather than just giving them fishes which is far more valuable. His children are very lucky.

Great to hear that your kids have parents like you. I hope that parents nowadays can strive to be a better role model. Sadly some parents think that being unkind to their children is 天道.

My wife and I plan to gift what our own parents had given us... Love, guidance, stable and happy home, opportunities to excel (education). We don't believe in gifting them houses, money unless they are in seriously situation (e.g. handicapped). They need to stand on their own, with their own ability, and willing to take risk, and take ownerships of their own choices in life. They can have our assets after we pass on.
@charmainefang90153 ай бұрын
Get them to work and take care of themselves and if they have the ability to do that on their own, with the extra financial help it will just propel them further taking them to another level. Right education, mindset and best with finincial help make a whole lot of difference.

While we try not to be calculative the money we help our children should be taken as loan to them. This way they won't take it for granted & will make plan to return back. In addition in marriages there is no guarantee so in event the marriage breaks the dispersion of the money from the house should then be clearly return back to parents.

If parents can help their adult children in housing or anything , it’s a good thing, give them their inheritance now instead of till u r gone. My 2 adult children,mid 20 then have part of their inheritance more than 10 years ago n their properties hv increased a lot in value now. The 4 grandchildren, 13,9,6 n 4/ years old.. each hv 500 shares of a bank stock, the dividends will b reinvested n compounded till they r 25 years old, i will b dead n gone then but at least I know they hav some money to help them in their lives. Help out if u can…

Very common nowadays, seen quite afew. However the MCST fee the kid pays themselves. The record breaking resale HDB prices not all are downgraders too, many are also from these pool where the parent chipped in to pay for 800k and up flats. Thus the high capital to do 100k+ Reno.

My husband and I married late, so we didn't need help from parents to buy property. I am happy to help my kid with housing deposit, but she may not need my help. There is good in letting our kids buy their own property, at least the first one. I see my friends who buy property for their kids complaining that their kids didn't look after the property well, or when their kids want to sell, they disapprove. If their kids bought their own property, they will have full freedom to do whatever they want with it. Ultimately, everything we own will go to our kids because we can't take our material things with us when we pass on. But when and how to give, that requires wisdom.

Exactly. This is my life mission to work hard and be financially secured and create a legacy for my two children (and now including grandchildren) because decades ago I promised myself that I would ensure that their lives are at least comfortable because the future is uncertain and very expensive!

My mum helped me with some money for my 1st hdb reno. I appreciated very much and paid her back after saving up the amount. Other than that, my parents do not know abt anything financially except pure saving in banks. Which is why i only learnt personal finance at around 30s through financial blogs and youtube. So i think it is impt to educate ya kids on personal finance as early as possible.

100% agree in all the mentioned points. Now what should parents do if we reach a future of 20 years later with every BTO costing $1mil and above, where there is no chance that a young couple can afford themselves? A $500k BTO today was around $200k 20 years ago

Mr Loo just made my parents look bad 😂 They totally stopped giving me allowance nor spend money on me when I reached 17. I needed to sign bond for monthly allowance while getting my polytechnic school fees sponsored. I worked full time to pay for my part time degree. I saved to pay my resale flat and reno all by myself. I also got to work hard to get my CPF to hit FRS too 😂 So for a moment I wondered why I don’t have a dad like Mr Loo so that I don’t need to strive so hard to stay alive 😂

Please don’t try to create property panics in Singapore ! Any Singaporean who is working and upgrading oneself thru continuous learning and part time study will sure afford to buy HDB resale or BTO! Unless one is a big spenders on Hanging flowers in clubs or womanizers or gambles ! Government just not doing enough on anti speculation on property by imposing longer term resale hdb holding period by taxing higher if property is sold with higher capital gain tax on all properties! Once implemented, many will cry till no tears ! See china property bubble burst in 2020 till now, how many properties were sold with negative equity with top up required after sale of property! 😢😢😢😢😢😢 so don’t create a false news on property panic in Singapore!

The decision sound great for parents but may not be good and what the children want. This may also destroy their self confidence and determinations to excel in life. I wanted to give my 3 grown up children 1 condo and cor but in they chose not to accept it. They told me they need to walk the paths like all their friends and peers, be independant.
