MBT and peeps are just wrong about the comic thing. Peeps is saying the other person shouldnt have a criticism because the criticism is just wrong and disingenuous. Im going to assume he misused disingenuous and meant a different word so ill ignore that because i cant possibly see how that has anything to do with this, but he LITERALLY PROVES HIMSELF WRONG in the same conversation by mentioning the SpongeBob meme. Show dont tell. Why bloat the image with unnecessary text, if the EXACT SAME message comes across with literally no text? Even if you think the text should/shouldnt or can/cant be there anyway regardless of how necessary it is, the fact that the exact same comic with no text still has the same meaning does prove that the criticism itself is valid. It means that the question of why the text is even there can at least be posed genuinely. It seems like peeps and mbt have chosen a side here “because funny” even though their side is objectively wrong and when the creator couldnt defend themselves being objectively wrong about the text they just jumped to ad homs on the other person to win.
@TheKastellan4 ай бұрын
Less text could made it less clear, in fact basil's example actually wouldn't have made the joke very clear and even if it did I think it ruins the joke a bit. I am going to explain/interpret the joke to explain my point. The joke is about how the "anti-woke" crowd seems to attach way too much importance to it that when something is deemed "anti-woke" they all jump on it. They use common phrases/lines people of that crowd is used so you can actually see/imagine those people and realise that what they are doing is pretty stupid. As the lemonade didn't actually change but suddenly they care for it. Basil says that because the OVERALL meaning can be given without those quotes then just remove them. And while the joke does work it arguably works LESS because you remove that clear link to what the criticism is to some more generic "oh right wing dumb/bad" that is just not as funny. It isn't hypocritical to say both of these work so complaining and saying you MUST have less text (what Basil is arguing) is dumb. Peeps isn't saying that less text is NOT good. He is saying it isn't REQUIRED and acting as if it is is dumb. Which is true. People who act as if these general rules are the word of law and then get mad when people actually play around with them are actually being stupid because they dont realose the point of rules especially in comedy are just guidelines and acting as if there is some objective truth makes you look dumb.
@cooldes45934 ай бұрын
@@TheKastellan you are just wrong. People have posted countless examples of the same comic with no text other than “lemonade” with no line of people, and then “Anti woke lemonade” with a huge line of people. This clearly expresses the EXACT SAME meaning of the comic. Regardless, my point is that the fact that we are even arguing this proves that the point is arguable at all. Meaning that peeps and MBT are just wrong about his criticism being unnecessary or disingenuous. If it’s arguable, then its able to be criticized
@TheKastellan4 ай бұрын
@@cooldes4593 I...don't you understood at all what I said. I didn't say having less words would absolutely ruin the joke or make it not funny. I said that simply saying " less words = good" in an absolutist way is a stupid take because it is just taking a general rules/guideline and applying it as law. It completely ignores any clarity/targeting or whatever other use case such dialogue could be used for. Like I already said, they quotes the "anti-woke" crowd in the comic use are basically word-for-word what such people would use in real life. It is a more specific attack against them than just leaving the quote out as it more directly lets the reader picture people saying that. Yes the OVERALL meaning of the comic is as you put it "the EXACT SAME" but when you actually go into the specifics it isn't because OF COURSE IT ISN'T YOU'RE REMOVING CONTEXT/INFORMATION. And yes, it is perfectly valid to say you like one or the other. I already made it clear I like the text being there because I think adding it makes the joke clearer. Also I would like to point out the Basil was people antagonistic to Haus in their tweet, Haus and in turn Peeps are simply returning in kind. Complaining Peeps or Haus shouldn't be mad/attack Basil for disagreeing on something debatable when Basil ALSO did so and in fact did so first is hypocritical. Peeps is pointing out that if you attack someone, they reserve the right to do it back and if you have complaints then just don't do it. You are just interpreting it in the worst light possible and then saying Peeps is a hypocrite in doing so. Like you agree that it is debatable but carry on to use absolutist language acting as if "show don't tell" is 100% always the case and that it is "objectively" true. Pick one. You cannot just use "objectively" when it is you but when it is someone else say "well it is debatable and depends".

This just tells me you didn't see the point. The point was that basil came out of left field with an annoying "fixed it for you" attitude, and the other twitter user responded negatively because when a stranger acts annoying for no reason you generally react negatively and people are acting as if being mean was not the correct response to basil's annoying tweet. It doesn't matter whether basil was right or wrong, that's not the point.

I think Asmongold is actually just very bad at speaking words so I'll say it, Elden Ring's issue is that they put Sekiro bosses into Dark Souls which does not mesh well at all. Often times, no matter what, you are dodging for 15 seconds from the same one or two combos which have a follow up specifically meant to punish you and nearly kill you for choosing to attack after it *seemed* to have ended. The game just baits you into being impatient, so the most fun people actually have with Elden Ring is being capable of cheesing bosses in some way or having a gameplan other than "I dodge I get 1 hit in I dodge for even longer"

"Words are in a comic" is such a dogshit, surface level take on this lol. Yes, you're allowed to use words in your comic. But the point of a joke, and especially political commentary jokes or political cartoons is to be punchy and assume your audience is intelligent. The comic in question is approaching Ben Garrison levels of unnecessary text. It shows Haus simply is not confident in their own art to the point that they think they need unnecessary dialogue to make a point that is already made with zero of the dialogue. I've got no horse in this race; I had zero clue who either of these people were before this. But holy shit "comics have words" is such a dumbass rebuttal to an extremely valid criticism of this comic. Without the dialogue the EXACT SAME POINT is made more succinct, punchier, FUNNIER, and with less crowding on the panels. More words =/= better. And I'm saying this as someone who sometimes gets paid by the fucking word! Brevity is a skill. Calling someone out for being bad at it is valid.

It was everything else that happened that made this a bigger deal, where Haus and others tried to defend the decision in and of itself, such as suggesting that Basil didn't like to read. As for what "objective" means in this context, it's the general position of philosophers of aesthetics that aesthetic value is objective. (~60% in the most recent philpapers survey) So there should be an objective fact of the matter as to which of these comics has more artistic merit, is more "aesthetically humorous", etc. Whether or not these facts are currently accessible to us. Basil Edit: People can "change" something to be "anti-woke" and people will buy it.... that's it. Well technically there are extra implicit interpretations but any interpretation on the edit and be done on the original so no point putting those down. It is almost as if removing the text necessarily removes information which if part of the joke may mean that there is an argument to keep it even if the GENERAL idea is still put across! Seriously if you have to rely on choosing an idiom/guideline and treat it as the law then you don't actually have an argument because you aren't actually thinking about the media and its context. Now if you talked about how Haus and people apparently went on to further attack Basil about stuff that is much more important than just making fun of them, then sure that could be true (idk I refuse to use twitter). BUT, that does not negate the fact you cannot complain the Basil edit is objectively better (it is an opinion) and you cannot complain that Basil was getting insulted AT ALL given they were the one who did it first.
