I ALMOST BROKE my $50K FERRARI 458 ENGINE REMOVING the INTAKE MANIFOLD

The Ferrari Red wrinkle paint that is commonly found on intake manifolds and valve covers on Ferrari Engines is notoriously sensitive and will begin to flake apart after a while. You have to treat it very softly while cleaning or you risk having it flake off. My Ferrari 458 intake manifold wrinkle paint is flaking off pretty badly so I wanted to send them out to be repainted. It turns out that you have to remove the entire intake manifold to separate the intake covers. This ended up being a far more difficult take than expected. Also while removing one of the vacuum hose clips, the clip popped off and fell into one of the intake runners on the cylinder head! Thankfully we were able to recover the piece using a borescope and a magnet.

Agree: I have "old" cars, but for comparison I have both a '96 (993) and F355, the Porsche is a rock and every interior part (vents, dash, switches, etc.) still looks new. The Ferrari, looks new, because it is! I've had to have the dash, all the switches, vents, etc. redone at $$, and my valve covers have the red paint falling off and looks like crap. (Note: the car still runs and sounds great). That's just the interior, that's not the cheap headers (the previous owner had to replace), again the Porsche has stock SS heat-exchangers still working great. LOL

If the valve covers start to leak next year. Look back and remember this is when You could get to them so much easier. So, I vote change them now! 😎 Do a video of cleaning all the stuff your taking off to get to them. And that engine bay, that’s a perfect time to access as much as you can to polish it up too!

Do the gaskets. You have fallen victim to the "while you are in there" situation, which can be especially bad on exotics. Do it now and know that it's not going to be a problem for another 40k miles. It's also why the smart play is to only start jobs like this in the winter, when it doesn't matter how long your car is in pieces. Although in ATX that may not make much difference.

VW/BMW/several other DI cars utilize a walnut media blast directly on the intake valves to clean that buildup off (there's a tool made that blocks off each port with two holes, one for a shop-vac hose and the other for the blasting wand to go in). Some manufacturers are going to dual-injection as a way to retain the fuel economy/power of direct injection, and the MUCH lower maintenance of port injection.

Proper way to clean direct injection engines is Walnut shell blast each intake port. A secondary optional method uses cleaner and bundled zip ties on the end of a drill.

Hi Dan, Hi Adam, If I may...as you have the air intake manifold off...I would suggest having the pneumatic actuators tested (part number 258761and replaced if needed. Mine were not working anymore and that was the root cause of a.lot of electrical problems such as the AVH Manettino and CST failure as well as the engine not getting enough air sometimes and too much some other times. Got it fixed and my 458 behaves like new...with at least 100HP more. It is easy to test...just take a vacuum pump and see if the actuators (the 2 of them...) are moving easily or not. Maybe a little vid on this one would be great too. Thanks to Roberto and Emmanuel from Roselli in San Jose CA who saved my Bellissima and explained me all of this :)

Carbon buildup like that is common with direct injection motors. You can pour Seafoam or some other type of cleaner into the cylinders with the valves closed and then use picks and brushes to scrape the buildup off. Then you need to vac the crud out. You don't want it going into the combustion chamber. LegitStreetCars has a video.

Damn, that’s all oily carbon build up in the head. Start looking into an Air Oil Separator(AOS) or catch can to no longer have oil recycling back through the intake via PCV
