As someone who took delivery of a 458 less than 2 weeks ago as of typing this, of course the title of your video caught my eye. I completely agree with your comparison to the 430 Scuderia. I was originally shopping for a 430 Scuderia, but with the recent price trend of them as well as the potential cost for maintenance is why I went with the 458 and I have to say I couldn't be happier with it so far. As for whether or not the 458 itself is overrated? I have to disagree, I think it has been put on a very high pedestal and from that perspective could be considered overrated, but it has been rightfully put on that pedestal due to how great it truly is, and the 458 will only continue to age gracefully.

Same for any Ferrari. But the 458 is the first Ferrari to just lack that visceral edge. It is, sadly, a little too refined, a little too artificial. A lot of it (imo) stems from its gearbox. There's a good reason why Lambo kept the single clutch in the Aventador.

Having had a few Ferraris I have to respectfully disagree. Some of the points you make (lack of reward for hitting 9k rpm, exhaust bark - although this is easily fixed with a £250 aftermarket controller) I agree with, but perhaps I’m a bit older and can remember how much of a spaceship this was when it landed in 2009. The same cannot be said about the 355, 360, or 430. When the 355 was released, Porsche had the 993 Turbo, a car that would monster it in every dimension bar noise, similarly the 360 which the 996 Turbo would demolish without a second thought. 430 - 997. However with the 458 it took Porsche a full 4 years to even come close, and for sheer driving pleasure the McLaren was miles behind. The 650 again came a full 4 years later. To criticise the 458 for those issues compared to cars that took years of development just to be comparable is a bit unfair. Also two things make it near perfect - make it a Spider (solves the in cabin noise issue) and buy a IPE exhaust- makes even the 355 sound a bit tame!
@MrGB19992 жыл бұрын
Spaceship vs purity and timelessness. Isn't Lamborghini the place of spaceships? 🤔 The 458 is the first Ferrari that put refinement before raw, visceral pleasure. However flick the manettino and it changed character instantly! I should have kept it but I part exchanged it for the car I always wanted the 360 CS. Owned two 458’s; a 2011 car and 2013 car, both Italia’s. Preferred the earlier car, which was more aggressive in sound- the 2012 upgrades softened this and the gearbox changes in race mode. The car was wonderful, but just never missed it once gone. Actually to me the most disappointing element was the flat plane engine sound. It’s was just a noise that got louder the higher you revved the engine. No depth or changes to it and certainly not a patch on earlier V8 Ferraris (the engine itself was wonderful in operation though). The inability to drive the car on a constant throttle at motorway speeds drove me nuts I.e. it was always either on or off the throttle. This was only ever fixed with the 488 onwards… Personally wouldn’t have another one and the game has moved on somewhat since. Always think the comments and support of this car was a bit ‘Emperors New Clothes’ - being blasphemy to criticise the greatest ever sounding V8. Na, not for me; if you really what the greatest engine, then buy yourself a pre GPF 812SF…. Mines not going anywhere soon (god willing)…. Edited to add, I’d definitely have another 488 over a 458; that’s was a car I still miss and wish I hadn’t sold.

"Lacking what I'm looking for"... you're an automotive journalist, you're jaded, you'll always have something to complain about whether you care to admit it or not. Complaining about a car that most everyone loves creates controversy and therefore increases views and subscriptions. Well done. The 458 is a sexy and exhilarating package on 4 wheels with its share of quirks, some of which can be taken care of with aftermarket mods. The 650S is just another quiet, boring, and unreliable McLaren that's great at going very fast for a highly depreciated price (before factoring in the required extended warranty). It will never be the last naturally aspirated mid-engined V8 supercar that revs to 9000 RPM. Totally disagree that 458 is overrated. I think no one is qualified to make such remarks about 458 ( or any other car for that matter) without actually owning it, living with it and driving it over a period of time. And, having the privilege/opportunity of owning multiple super cars from various manufacturers at the same time, to be able to compare them with the 458 Italia. There is no other Ferrari out there which ticks the boxes which the 458 does: 1- Last Pininfarina Designed V8 Ferrari. Regarded by most Ferraristas as one of the best looking modern Ferrari to date. 2- Last Naturally Aspirated V8 by Ferrari, revving up to 9000 rmp. 3- Cult Following globally 4- V8 Sound 5- Build quality far better than any previous Ferrari. Period. 6- More drivable than ANY previous Ferrari . Period. 7- Excellent Factory warranty and 7 year free service plan. Better than anything Ferrari had offered for previous models 8- F1 Technology etc etc etc. If Ferrari 458 Italia is not a better car in every single aspect, than any of its predecessor than is it the 488 GTB? or F8 Tributo? Excellent review James. I got to drive the 458 for many laps around Dunsfold where I was encouraged to drive it quite hard, at the time I thought it was the best car I had ever driven, which it was in all fairness. We purchased a 12c as the 458 was out of our budget(I still think they command a price way way more than they are worth), after driving the 12c I personally think it smashes the 458 in every department, it has a much more luxurious interior, it’s considerably quicker, it’s more comfortable to drive, has good storage(similar to the 458) and it’s never going to beat the 12c on a track. I do think the 458 sounds good though and I also think it’s a very good looking car from the outside. If they were available for say 50k less than what they are fetching now, then I think they would be an excellent choice or worth looking at, but as you do rightly say there are much better cars out there for the money, the 650 being one but also I would also say the 12c and by a good stretch too.

Jay, the 458 in its stock form does not measure up to the 430 Scuderia in some respects; however, with only a few mods you could hit this car way out of the ballpark! Just finding out that after the 458, Ferrari did their styling in-house definitely explains some things. The 458 is just so proper and elegant but subtle to its sporting credibility. The cars that came after are just to fussy and aggressive looking. If I wanted a aggressive and crazy styled Italian car, I’d go for a Lamborghini. Ferrari has lost the classy elegance that really made their cars stand out. The Roma is a good attempt though and the 812 is a very good looking front engined v12 gt

Purist here, and imo ANY sports/super car that doesn't have 3 pedals is overrated. The last truly timeless Ferraris were the 550/456/360 generation of cars. Not just in looks, but because real manual transmission cars were still far more common and not outright unavailable. A big part of what made these types of cars so cool and exclusive to me back in the day was that it took more than just money to own and drive one. You had to know how to drive. I remember being a kid and hoping that I'd do well at learning to operate a manual transmission so that I could one day drive my dream cars. The fact that that is gone forever makes these things entirely uninteresting to me, outside of some video entertainment, for which I thank you JayEmm!

21:15 - 21:26 Whoops :) When the 458 was introduced, and Clarkson drove it on TopGear, i went through the motions, being excited because "new Ferrari". ..but it never actually got a hold of me, like the 355 especially, but also the 348, 360 and slightly less the 430. ..and since then it only got worse, with the turbocharged engines. I see it this way: The older Ferraris were build for people who love cars, care about the soul of a car, the experience aso. The 458 onwards are build for those who want to be fast, where soul, or the experience besides being fast, is secondary or lower on the list of priorities.

@77361642 жыл бұрын
no, the Ferrari 458 is not overrated. It's a naturally-aspirated prancing horse gem. And the McLaren MP4-12C is the correct comparison to the 458, as they were both launched at a similar time. The McLaren 650S was launched in 2014 when Ferrari were about to launch the 458 Speciale. The standard 458 Italia wipes the floor with a 12C and gives the 650S a good run for its money.

Of all youtubers I’d guess you’d be the one saying this, yes. 😊 On the steering, are u sure all cars had the exact correct toe/alignment? Just some mm’s off makes a world of difference, and of ALL 2nd hand cars I’ve bought NONE had the correct toe.
@BigUriel2 жыл бұрын
Tyres also make a massive difference. Bothers me a bit how reviewers never mention this. A car with great steering can feel like shit if it's not aligned properly or has crap tyres. Also in older cars you have to consider how worn all the steering and suspension bushes might be. It's like complaining about brake feel on a car with some Halfords brake pads and 15 year old brake fluid.
@JayEmmOnCars2 жыл бұрын
I do believe the cars alignment had been done recently, and it was on PS4S I am sure. I will mention tyres if I think they are to blame but here they are not. The issue is that the power steering has too much assistance at too high a speed - only beyond 70 does it weight up but I want that at 50

Why do you need a 4 point safety harness seat belt for the Ferrari 458 Italia with the carbon fibre seats?
@garycartwright48602 жыл бұрын
The reason it’s not exciting you is because you keep short shifting it. It loves revs. Just about every car you test, you semi give it some and potter around on engine braking. You need a bit of private road or a track to get a proper idea of what this thing can do. I’ve drove one of these and absolutely rung it’s neck. It’s most alive at the top of the rev range.

In the US/China/Korea/most of South East Asia it is perhaps more forgiving, but in the UK/most of Europe/Japan/Hong Kong, you basically become a butler or a custodian once you buy a Ferrari, you need the perfect service record from designated shops, and need historian/curator level of knowledge to be able to pass your car to the next buyer and/or stay associated with Ferrari, perhaps I'm a bit exaggerating, but you get my gist

As a former 458 owner I have to agree. This is why: 1. You cannot drive the car smoothly. The throttle mapping on the car is terrible and the DCT shifts like a student driver. 2. Every gear is lurchy like 1st gear in a real manual. 3. The build quality is terrible. Dash peels, knobs fall off, buttons stick, etc. 4. It really doesn't sound good stock. Not only is the exhaust note bad but it has automatic valves that silence the car below 3k RPM. Expect to pay 15k+ for an exhaust and tune to make it sound like a Ferrari. 5. Values are *insane* . If the car cost half as much it might be worth it but you can get much better cars for the money

previous generation prius TRD in japan stiffens chassis, suspension etc to improve how much speed can be carried around turns without fishtailing as easily. consider doing such a thing except with a communicative steering , same with brakes and maybe even pedal, to allow knowing how close to grip limit one is so he can learn to steering steadily and minimize braking while doing it steadily, for longevity of fuel, engine oil, hybrid battery, tires, brakes, etc. consider the new cheaper but also pearl white prius prime, then a ttoyota trueno corolla ae86 paint job similar to the one from the popular anime story, which is about a guy who tries making fun with his front wheel drive easily affordable box in his delivery job. hand painted black letters appaerance liek the ones on that car, maybe with a lack lower area with a wrap, just as a reference to that concept except with a bit more of a art appeal within bounds of simplicity.
