I find and fix another engine leak but the hydraulic suspension has me stumped. I can't figure this one out so if you have any ideas I'm all ears. Enjoy the madness!

On My s55 AMG i went through all this. Replacing parts, trying to add pressure . Nothing . Finally called a tow truck and right before it was ready to go up I floored it in neutral to about 5-6000 rpm and lifted right up. Been perfect ever since. I imagine you still have air in the system and need to work on pushing or getting it out . Look online, all kind of crazy procedure to do it

@@DrPeppa it can be frustrating but you'll get better as time goes on. Some things aren't easy to nail down and diagnose. Even pro mechanics run into things that stump them for a while or seemingly don't make sense. Things sometimes fail in odd ways. We had a CL55 in the shop that got a new ABC pump and it took forever to get the system to wake up again. Same deal, took fluid, had pressure, but totally dead. The seller who provided the pump said it is very common and told us what to try to get it going. Basically it was a process of many ride height button presses, followed by driving the car back and forth a couple times in the work bay, letting it sit for an hour and repeating. Eventually it came around about 4 days after the install.

it's a pity you need the engine to run the pump (hook it to a drill or a 1/4hp electric motor slung under the body?) so you can't hear things over the motor noise. Spinning the thing up independently would at least allow manually opening/flushing out lines to ensure air really is out of the system or hearing it bleed through, etc

a well-maintained Merc is a good buy. The problem is that people who have money to buy these things new are mostly only concerned with appearances and flip the cars before they leave the warranty period so they never bother with any scheduled service. For every Jay Leno there are 1000 "drive it like you stole it" buyers - and of course the overriding assumption for performance machinery is that people who own them have a few mechanical clues to rub together (most don't at the "bling" end of the market) It's not just cars. I'm working with people dealing with old buildings in England (100-500 years old) and virtually all the fancy stuff is skin deep with any old crap underneath. Once you start digging in to do repairs, you realise the things were primarily built to impress the local proles, not to last (which has a lot to do with why so many old places end up as abandoned shells) A similiar problem applies if you ever buy JDM cars - their average lifespan is 6 years - until the first major safety check (the "shakken") and it's not unusual at all to find 60-100,000 mile engines still full of run-in oil and the filters they left the fcactory with (more common to find cars that haven't had any fluids/filters changed since the first dealer service at 3 months)

to stop cans "blooping" when you pour (and prevent starting dribbles) - instead of having the opening at the bottom of the pour face, start with it rotated to the top and then rotate the can as it empties out. You can keep more or less the same pour angle for most of the pour this way and you don't get bubbles in your fluids (or splashes when pouring gas)

Hi Alex, based on my experience with my CL500s, I suspect that your problem is that you reconnected the battery with the car in the air. That confuses the computer that controls the ABC suspension because it thinks the car already is up. Disconnect the battery, lower the car onto its wheels, and reconnect the battery. Then the computer will know that the car is low and will respond to the button on the dash.

Alex, I have an S55 AMG, I have had to rebuild both valve blocks, replace the pump, and replace the front two struts, and even create custom strut mount spacers. Have the car as low as possible, don't have it raised on the lift. After the car has sat you need to pressurize the reservoir before you start it, maybe 5 psi. Then start it and let it run for a little. You can either try putting it in gear or hitting the raise button, or using the bidirectional control to "move to calibrated height automatically". Another thing you can do is take the pulsation dampener off at the pressure valve you were messing with, let the fluid flow out a bit to gravity bleed. Make sure the fluid isn't getting hot which would indicate a leak. If you have the car lifted on the lift, the car will not put pressure to the struts as it is trying to lower the car to the calibrated height. It needs to be slammed. Any codes other than "critical vehicle level?" If you can try to put it in gear and roll around a little it might help as well.

You have air in the system, even a little air will mess a lot up, car brakes are 50-100 psi. You have 3000!!! It's AIR!

I had, what for me was the biggest series of DIY on my N54 and since I was also hurry up and wait, I just decided to clean the hell out of things once I had them out... parts themselves and where they came from. It is immensely satisfying to have such a clean space looking back. If you're not keeping the car, I understand but highly recommend cleaning because it'll be mo' bettah after the fact.

I confess I cringed when Alex said he was going to loosen the fitting with 3000 psi behind it. When I was in the Navy, the boiler techs troubleshot 1200 lb steam leaks in the boiler room with broomsticks. If the stick suddenly got shorter, you have found the leak. OMG. You can't see it as it is superheated steam. Part of why the Navy went to LM2500 turbines instead.

Alex, is it possible that the car must be fully on the ground with all the weight on the tires, so the height sensors can "see" that the car needs to be raised??? Because if the height sensors believe the car is already raised, then it wouldn't try to raise it further... I don't know... Just a thought... Edit 1: On my S55, when I replaced a couple of accumulators I had to lower the car to the ground to get the system to recognize that it needed to raise. Or was it that the system needed the "back pressure" created by the weight of the car on the hydraulic shocks to work against? It did take me a while to get the system to bleed, and I only had each accumulator off for a couple of minutes while I installed the new ones, and I hardly lost any fluid. It was a PITA, but I got it done in the end. It isn't hard, just time consuming, and repeated cycling up and down, and up and down, until the system bled its self. That's all I have for you... For now. Edit 2: What about trying to get some of the air out by cracking each of the accumulators (furthest to nearest) sequentially, whilst raising and lowering at the same time... Maybe just like bleeding the brakes...
@LegitStreetCars
@LegitStreetCars 2 жыл бұрын

I am sure all this is in the manual but along that line of thought...shouldn't the car be slammed when filling the hydraulic fluid to avoid forming air pockets? The fact that that valve had some air pressure in it seems to indicate the presence of air.
