I "quit" jiu-jitsu once because the atmosphere was not good. A new gym moved close and the atmosphere is infinitely better. Sometimes there are not many options though.

The first time I tried BJJ, I ended up at a gym where the instructor showed up in a gold G-Wagon, pumped with so many steroids he barely fit into his gi. During training, a blue belt I partnered with pinned me with a knee-on-belly that felt more like a rib-crushing move than anything else. I felt that for over a year afterward. At the end of the class, they told me my black gi wasn’t allowed and insisted I either buy one with the school’s logo or sew on their patch. That was my first and last day there. Two years later, I finally got another chance to train at a different place and started again, though I still regret the time I lost. Unfortunately, sometimes, you don’t have many options.

Yes Bernardo Faria I have been training for about 20 years.....I was a purple belt for about 16 years. Fabio Leopaldo gave me a purple belt... I trained in fitness and did Jiujitsu most weeks many days during that time. Ralph Gracie was the only person to respond to letters I emailed and sent letters through the mail and still would train like you said... When ever I would get chances and find regular rhythm modalities of training Jiujitsu. I went through a depressive state and after spending thousands of dollars on training traveling and training I just did not feel as if I was getting things back. I finally got my brown belt and been training at many dojos and gyms since. In California and mid Atlantic area......this years I have trained for about five months... In this training block I have been training for 6 weeks about five to six days a week plus doing fitness running and lifting..... Any advice? I also purchased you foundations of Jiujitsu, close guard series, and over under passing videos. We met once in New York at Marcelo Garcia dojo when it was on the third floor...... Your shoulder was bothering you that day and you wore a blue GI......? I tried to send my gi and purple belt home threw the mail with some documents.... Supposedly it was lost....... What is your advice when I make the journey for black belt .....also the majority of my training is logged and posted on FB. What is your Advice Master, Bernardo?

Great Video Bernardo, I signed up to my first BJJ school at the age of 32 in June 2023 and just quit that school (but not the sport) this November 2024. Similar to what you said I was looking at few different schools online and I said why don't I just go to the one closest to me which is literally a 2min drive for me. This is only about 50% of my experience - No trial class, straight into a 1yr contract, 2nd Session popped my AC joint (grade 2-3) no one taught me to front roll was just told to do it, being a bigger guy about 50% of the students we're trying to rip my head off (I don't even blame them that's the culture from the top), leg attacks on me from week one, torn ucl/mcl in elbows about half a dozen times in the first few months (americanas/armbars), mats that don't get cleaned, instructors that walk off the mats barefoot into the men's toilet then return to the mats, instructors poor hygiene over all, over heard the head instructor tell the other instructors to keep certain techniques to themselves so they have an edge over the students, instructors get noticeably jealous when someone starts to surpass them, instructors rolling heavy and too hands on with a female student (no stripe white belt), I've turned up some nights and it'll be barley any students or just myself and the instructors thinks its ok to sit behind the counter and watch us/me train ourselves/myself and theres much more... The school has barley any students now, nearly every white belt that started before or after me has left, the average age of the members is now about 50. Not shitting on the school or else I would of put there name out there, I have no regrets as I've made some life long friends. I'm about to turn 34 and I've had a pretty rough upbringing in and out of combat sports so it's very hard to deter me but I'm worried about younger people, women, kids and your normal day to day people I don't want them to think that this is BJJ, hopefully they see this video and post like mine because like I mentioned about those white belts that had left, some have gone to other schools but most have quit altogether which is sad... The comfortable option is not always the best option remember.

well, you were already a member in the fitness gym but the bjj academy was naturally going to be more friendly to get you to pay membership :) also, the coach in the fitness gym is probably not getting paid as well as the bjj coach teaching in a bjj academy....
