Put a set of aftermarket aluminum heads on it. Factory Ford small block cast iron heads have minuscule ports and do not flow enough air to supply even a Briggs & Stratton. A few years back a magazine dyno test picked up 100 hp by just changing the heads to a set of aluminum AFR 165's. Craig, I appeal to you, seriously, DO NOT put a spool in a street driven vehicle's rear end, it matters not that you and some others have "gotten away" with it already. There was a young man killed in a neighboring town here a few years back because he had put a spool in the rearend and it caused the car to lose control in a corner on a wet road. One tire needs to freewheel during cornering on the street because the tires will rotate at different speeds. With a spool locking the axles together one tire will be spinning during turns and that can cause you to lose control, also a spool has a tendency to "push" the front wheels when turning. Get a Detroit Locker or some other positraction type rearend. Yes, you might get lucky and nothing will ever happen to you, BUT you also might not get lucky and kill yourself or some innocent person. Spools are also very hard on axles when street driven IF your engine makes much power. I have been a mechanic for over 40 years, to let you know that I do have a clue as to what I am talking about. I'm just trying to help you, it's up to you whether you listen or not. P.S. That truck needs a 460 in it, that will really wake it up. The torque of a well built BBF is amazing! Lol!

You mentioned leaking oil and I saw your silicone or the red gasket maker whatever it was. Have you checked on a gasket and the copper washers that Ford third members all used to come with? In the 70s they were dealer only items. You could sometimes get by with something on the mating surfaces like RTV or gasket maker. But those had one time use flat copper washers under the nuts. A guaranteed leak if you left them off. The nuts used to be special as well. The side that went to the washer looked machined. Good luck though! Like your old truck!

I am sure you will regret the spool. Long ago my drag car had a spool and now I do a lot of off-roading with an air locker and I can tell you that turning will be a problem, especially on dry pavement. While driving on pavement you won't break the spool but you will break axles easer than you think. For the street, spend the extra $ and get a good limited slip unit or an selectable locker. Don't get a Detroit locker for the street as they are great off-road but will make highway driving a challenge, I know I have one.

Another thing to know is that the stock cast rail guided rockers don't like high lift cams, the slot in them is not long enough and they can make hard contact with the studs on full lift, snapping the studs off flush with the head. There will be witness marks on the studs where the rockers slapped them. And don't ask how I know all this.

Pulling the studs truly creates a high vacuum (sucks) I would not be concerned about the heads with an 11:1 compression ratio. the factory offered 10.5:1 on the 302 in the middle sixties, and they used probably the same basic heads as you have. Unless you really want to buy aluminum heads for whatever reason, I would stay with the ones you have. You might even seal everything up with modeling clay or something similar, and make the repair with the heads on, then clean up with an air hose followed by a vacuum. By the way, I believe you need shorter rather than longer push rods with a higher lift cam. Longer ones would certainly give you the possibility of coil bind, and maybe piston to valve interference. Just my thoughts, as the last small block I massages was in 1966! If you really want to increase traction, why not go to a Detroit Locker, since you already have a 9" and a good ratio? I think Dana makes them now. You could order a FE block Mustang with a 9" locker in 1967 for certain.

Just my personal opinion, At 400 hp, you're right at the edge of splitting the block in half. In my 35 years of being a mechanic, now retired, 4.10 gear is too much for a 302. 4.10 gears on the track can cause you to over-rev the little 302. Causing you to split the block. Even 3.73 is a little too steep for a 302. Me personally, using a stock block 302, I wouldn't let it rev, absolute no higher than 6 grand. At 6 grand your asking for trouble. If all you're going to do is race this truck, go ahead and spool the rear. But, if you plan on driving it on the street, it will be a totally different animal. Pray you don't get caught in a rain. It will be scary to drive. The ass end isn't going to want to go in the direction you are trying to point it. Also, expect broken axles. Turns will put lots of twist into the stock axles. You will be changing axles a lot. I know. I've been there. Expect a lot of tire chirp in turns. What you need is a 351C engine. They rev high and hold together. I've seen 351 C rev to 7 grand with 4.10 gears. Win races and hold together a lot longer. Just my 2 cents.
