Good going Shawn! just a fun fact about identity from India... I'm 32 years old man living in City of Pune, State of Maharashtra, from last 18 years.. Outside state of MH, I'm Maharashtrain, In the state of MH, I'm Punekar (as in Puneite) In the city of Pune I'm (still) outsider because, not native to city nor schooled here and don't live in/around old center of city, that means I live 7-8 kms from so-called center of city. (this is changing owing rapid urban growth) I was born in Mumbai but not Mumbaikar, because, For first 15 years I was schooled in Matheran which is between Pune and Mumbai (where my father worked for 35 years), here I was outsider because my father came there to work from other place/ province in the state called khandesh. This is all in One single state of the country.. This is just matter of three/four districts of one state and there are many more :) And yes all these places have very very distinct socio-political- geographical-cultural and linguistic features, so I grew up three different languages/dialects native to the state.. khandeshi at home, konkani in and around the town, Marathi in general.. and off course Hindi through bollywood and later english in academics all in first fifteen years... India...... not a county ..its world within world..too complex for shallow gazers to genrealise... yet very simple...(such identity is not matter of day today life)...there many like me.. and hence most of are chilled out. There is some essence in Hindu and Indian philosophies that goes beyond language and geographic land and You and community have found it , doing outstanding job balancing and picking up the best of all the cultures.. not a easy job... Good luck.

(2) Krishna, advised, encouraged and assisted the Pandavas through Arjun to the mass killing of 100 Kauravas, to resolve a family feud over the inheritance. Bahu Bali; Yes! Hinduism is the oldest religion in the World based on ignorance, superstitions as evident from worshiping (1) Sri Ganesh, an assembly of a beheaded kid covered up with the head of a slaughtered elephant, a MURDA, to remove life obstacles. Good Luck, mere bhai. (2) According to Valmiki Ramayana, Hanuman, a vanar/monkey failed to pluck out a plant, yet broke apart the parvat. Marvelous. It flew carrying the parvat to Lanka. Incredible when the monkey has NO wings. Ram flew out of Ayodhya on a bird, Jaitayu when NO bird can carry a passenger across the road. Birds tilt and turn upside down during the flight. Mere bhai, it is PURE Asatya and bakwas. Mariach transformed into a deer to lure Sita would remind you of the fairytale, Ramayana is a kalpanic Kahani where Ram is a kalpanic double murderer for killing Ravana and Khubhkaranr for Sita haran. With hands dripping with blood he asked Sita to perform morally reprehensible Agni pariksha proving to be a stupid misogynist believing sexual fidelity would make Sita, a mother of his two sons FIREPROOF. Mahabharata was narrated by Rishi Vyas and written by Ganpathi using its tusk. PURE zhoot and bakwas. Mere bhai Facts are stubborn, the truth is bitter. Satyemeva Jayete.

Some Indian friends consider me non-Indian because I never lived in India, but I think that is a very short-sighted view. In the West-Indies we seem to have preserved our values better than many people in India. And in places like Suriname and the Netherlands we have also kept speaking Hindi and Bhojpuri so we have no problems understanding song lyrics or movie dialogues. Moreover we don't see English as a prestige language over English, Dutch, French or Spanish as seems to be the case in India.

I think that we hindus in India can learn so much from experiences of Hindu people in countries like Trinidad & Tobago, Canada, Fiji, Mauritius, Indonesia etc. One thing I learnt from this video is Hinduism gives you freedom to interpret. Social realities change with space and time. Everything keeps changing and we need to adapt according to conditions. By doing this we will only strengthen ourselves and be able to overcome any hurdle. Be open and rational like rishis of Upanishads. That's the way. Thanks to Shawn and all our common ancestors.

Hey shawn! I watched your video for the first time. You are amazing. Let me tell you as a hindu born and brought up in India and still living there, that hinduism does not try to fit all things in one mold. Everyone is free to draw their own interpretation of things and we can still be one. There is something about our hindu culture, that no matter what the circumstances we never compromise our identities and hold on to our roots strongly. I understand how much difficult it must have been for your parents to remain true to their origins, but not only did they themselves succeeded in maintaining their identity, but also passed it to their future generation that is you. I came to truly appreciate the strong identity that I inherited from my ancestors when I saw the western world struggling with identity crisis, I clearly had some thing very solid to fall back on that they did not have. I hope you relate with this. Even in the land of its origin, hinduism is the result of natural evolution of mankind, it has no founder and no commandments, it is something that comes within from everyone of its adherent. This is the uniqueness of hindu culture. So feel free to evolve and adapt as long as you keep the soul of hinduism intact, which I am sure you do. I am really proud to see you today and talk about how our culture survived in a far of land. We may have less things in common today but we are connected by a common identity - Hindu. Keep up the good work.

Excellent video Shawn; I applaud you for doing this comprehensive piece. I'm a Hindu Trini & I'm sad to say that encounter a lot of Indian Trinis with Hindu surnames that have converted. We can only now preserve the present Hindu population in Trinidad. It is very difficult to get those we have lost to Christianity back into our Hindu fold. But a young person such as yourself is refreshing to encounter on KZbin. I'll be sure to forward your videos to many persons. Thank you 🙏

Vazhippokkan PassersBy Are There Poor Bramhins, In India? If So Cast Systems Are Based on Economics, I Assure You They Also Has Bramhins With Poor Thinking! Bramhins My Ass😂😂 Commonsense Is The Masters of All Books! Because a LIE can be both written and Spoken By Something We Called Man! VADIC WISDOM AND PHILOSOPHY! I Was a Christian, But When I realized That Cast Systems Was Propigated By The Colonizers to Devide And Conquer To Rule My Brothers! I Reverted Back To Hinduism To Protect And Defend My Roots! 🙏🙏💪💪

@Vazhippokkan " if you claim as hindu , your ancestor might curse you becuase hindua ideology or sanskrit ideology is nothing but discriminating non brahmins , dalits etc. " I replied to that comment. Brahmanism =/= Hinduism (Sanatan Dharma). I never said forget what brahmins did, instead understand what Hinduism truely is, and you are who is being emotional, just becoz brahmins used hinduism and corrupted it to subjugate others does'nt mean we throw away hinduism, rather it needs to be reformed.

Wow. This was a great video, Shawn. Thank you. Im 1st gen Liberian American that practices Hinduism. Some native Liberians tell me I’m not Liberian and certainly frown upon me as I don’t identify w Christianity. I do still recognize Jesus as my family deity for the last 7 generations but I’d love to find out who was our deity before Christianity was forced upon us. And then I get some Indians that tell me Bharat is for them only. I follow my heart and do my best not to internalize any of their comments. I get more Bharatians and Liberians that do support. I’m grateful for all of it. God knows me and that’s all that matters.

Hyphenated existences are a challenge. Same goes for many Indo-Caribbeans. One side of the spectrum we are not Indian enough and the other side is we are not Caribbean enough (I get this sometimes). Finding out your deity would be a extremely beneficial but also challenging. Keep following your path - Hinduism welcomes all! 🙏🏽🔱🕉️

Just found your channel! I want to know more about Hinduism as I am thinking of practising it. I just watched a video by a professor about the Caste system and I was pleasantly surprised to know that nowhere in any of the Hindu scriptures is the caste system mentioned, only the various Varnas are mentioned (it does not say anyone is lower than anyone, everyone must carry on doing their karma or dharma) in fact, the term caste came from invasions to India. Which is quite interesting to know since Hinduism itself does not condone caste system or sati. That has really made me feel good and I can practice what Hindu philosophy teaches without too many doubts.

When you compare old and new professions, people have their own identity.CE0, COO, CTO, same style old job, hair cutter (Barber) wood pecker (Mr. Carpenter) etc. Manager, Labor, owner then you name it.All political and religious structure originates from history.Jacob made lot of wells, and trade it water resource, goat, Etc.Old name turned to Israel. It is a race not the place.

Shawn the name factor is something many of us combat and it makes me irate when people tell me I am not a Hindu because of my name. In fact Some say Steven Knapp and David Frawley are not "real" Hindus. Your presentations are so exact and interesting. Thanks also for mentioning that people bring into their religions what they have experienced in their total culture. It ois those things which make our religion so rich and personnel. My holy day is now Monday. Shiva's day. Just FYI Thanks again for your voice from the non India born segment of devotees.

Thanks alot to all of you for introducing a new face of Hinduism, being student of Sanskrit I wanna tell you all that surprisingly Sanskrit, Persian and English belongs to same linguistic family i.e. Indo-European family . Values are more important than any of the other identities. Malini Awasthi an Awadhi folk singer told that when she was Guyana she heard some very rare and old bhajan and folk compositions which has been lost even in Indian villages I am of the opinion that this migrated Hindu community is really a Neo Hindu community based on true values of ।। आ नो भद्रा: कृतवो यन्तु विश्वत:।।

Surjit Roy; Here is a proof you should consider with a critical mind.
