In the last section of the video “Gerby cooks,” I think he really hit the nail on the head. I was thinking last night about how certain behaviors like pornography and constant noise which is meant to block out silence leads to a different state of consciousness. One perhaps a few tiers “lower” than where we’re supposed to reside. Pornography separates you from a secure sense of identity in a way because you’re relegating your conscious experience to an animalistic state; one bereft of reason or any real perception for that matter. It “neuters” you, figuratively of course, by providing you the illusion that you’ve acheived what you needed to acheive in this world. Consequently, not only the physical composition of your brain is altered as shown in fMRI scans, but also the composition of your thoughts, dreams, desires, and any sense of purpose. What abstaining does is allow you to be restless; to have the appropriate amount of anger or dissatisfaction. It allows you to see it, and want to actually solve the problem as opposed to temporarily negating it with bullshit stimuli.

Reading, meditation, writing, working out, eating (semi)healthy and just doing anything I can that’s worth while. But as for our current condition with regard to social dynamics, what can we do? Evangelize? That doesn’t seem to work. Sometimes it gets lonely and I feel like a stranger in a strange world with strange primates who are unaware of the current state. Whether or not I’m coming off as pretentious right now, I couldn’t care less anymore. It’s not like I could share these thoughts with people in real life; maybe a therapist, but even then there’s an epistemological gap between my experience of the world and their’s. Plus, therapy is a commoditized relationship, which just feels inauthentic from the outset. It’s not necessarily an argument against therapy, I know the merits of this practice- I’m a psychology major. But… idk man

You could workout, you could journal or do something creative, but at the end of the day, we’re creatures designed to achieve. Our success as a species is wholly dependent on collective production and output. I’m no economist, but it feels as though we’ve hit a sort of plateau in terms of what one person can produce; as a result, the subject becomes alienated from their work. (This particular idea comes from Marx, btw). But anyway, it’s also difficult to express any of these sentiments with friends because one cannot see illusion when they are encapsulated by it. My friends’ “hobbies" consist of video games, watching movies, smoking weed, and scrolling on their phone (which aren’t really hobbies). It’s like, yeah, this whole “life” thing would be a lot easier if I was surrounded by a community of serparatists of sorts who’ve forgone these short-term illusory pleasures.

I think the biggest issue for us (guys, but girls probably as well) is these copes are near impossible to avoid when you feel like your entire life is a mess. It's one thing to have a job, a small family / partner, and some good health, but struggle with porn so it can be isolated with time and support when the tension shows that. It's hard but possible. When your finances, relationships, health, and mind are so fucked that it feels insurmountable (with no meaningful support mind you), how do you think the average person would react with so many avenues for the smallest sense of relief a touch away? Why else do you think it's getting worse? It's more than "hard". Losing weight is hard, quitting smoking is hard, dating is hard. Finding hope amidst a perceived disaster of a life feels unwinnable, and requires a lot more to even get to the isolated hard work needed to improve it. It needs clarity, a sense of why is any of that worth the trouble, and hope, otherwise the rope will win out most cases. That's not me being entirely cynical, I think a lot of people when stripped of distractions will feel unable to even cope with the emotional flooding and will choose impulsively (just look at the chatbot story). If you're struggling to even start your journey, I beg you to find your sense of hope. These black pills can be clarifying, but they don't always give a REASON to keep putting up with it all. Find support, even if its one person, to be an anchor for you. You cannot lone wolf your way out of some these, and it's very easy to beat yourself up until you're entirely gone.

I didn't mean "find someone to leech or depend on for everything", I meant more find something outside yourself to give it a sense of meaning, many of which usually find involving another person. Family, close friend, significant other, mentor, maybe even therapy if you find a good one, etc. A lot of people I know, even in the worst circumstances usually will say they're able to get through hell when there's something (usually involving someone) to make it worthwhile. If it's only you and an empty room, a rope will seem better: you're still left alone to your thoughts. It's why I say don't take the good of family for granted if you can have one, and try to reconnect with people you liked that fell out of touch with. Point is, I just want people to find that thing keeping them going, especially when it's bad.

I think this video is far more gloomy on these things than needed. People who criticize this stuff give the common philosophy about "false comforts giving a crutch", as this video does. The problem is that this isn't always the case. It's often true, that life itself often fails people who have invested significant efforts into going about things in a normal way. Some people get into multiple relationships that fail. Some people, through no fault of their own, might be unable to get in a real relationship due to factors out of their control. The fact of the matter is, there are people who are dealt a bad hand in life, or perhaps they are just unlucky and end up "alone". If one of these people would follow the advice of THIS video, there is just no guarantee they will find any success at all because life has no such guarantees. These new things made possible by advancing technology are not "false comforts". They do provide SOME comfort so it would be more apt to call them "limited comforts". But you know what, for someone down on their luck or life dealt them a bad hand, any comfort is a good thing. People need to evaluate their situation as an individual and be honest about what works/doesnt work and find what's effective for them. Technology is a tool which can bring positive things into our lives and it has a place. When you look at things like AI and bots, this is a tech which is just going to get FAR more advanced than it is right now and will eventually be able to be indistinguishable from real people. At some point people will be able to have quite meaningful relationships with an AI ( just look at the movie Her as an example ).
