This is the dumbest fake joke ever by FAR. Most people know the difference between headphones and hearing aids. Taking out your hearing aids isn't funny, it's stupid. The only way this joke works is if the entire class knew OP was deaf, but the teacher somehow didn't. Even then it doesn't work because it would have to be the first day of school, at which point, you'd be telling the teacher that you're wearing hearing aids, assuming you misheard the teacher talking to you instead of the person next to you in the first place. Not only that, but OP would've known if the audience was laughing because OP would've been able to see the audience. OP did not say if they were blind.

You have missed the joke. The professor told the hearing student Roy (who we will call Other Roy) to remove the earbuds he was wearing. Roy Prime was walking past and heard the teacher talking to Other Roy, and removed his hearing aids as a joke even though he knew the teacher was talking to Other Roy.
