1)Long burning candles in a jar actually put out a lot of heat, will burn for days, a Jesus candle for up to a week. 2)Mr. Heater Buddy heater runs on canister or can be hooked up to 20# propane cylinder. In a small space it actually gets too hot, can be run even longer just using the pilot light. Start up on low, when the car is heated up turn it down to the pilot light, stay warm enough to dawn. 3)Dress in layers including thermal underwear = light weight, not cumbersome, and warm. 4)Zero degree sleeping bag reflects body heat you can zip up mummy style bag up around your head if needed. Even a 20° F bag might be warm enough in the desert. 5)Wear a headband, 80% of heat escapes through the head. You would look good in one.

There's a Mexican food truck across from dollar general and it's great!! Check it out!! The beauty salon showers are $5. Also, I'm sure Mark can help you with your van and solar/generator (for free of course) when we get back if you still need it. He can fix anything and enjoys helping people. Stay warm...

Hey Alyssa, I love seeing videos from [brave] females on their solo van/RV life exploring the world, something I would love to do one day! But the way NYC have my trust levels set up 🥴😩😂! Anywho, the fact that you’re nearly a decade younger than I gives me #motivation to do things I want to do. Thank you for sharing. Hey, I did some tests on how much power my electric blanket used, it ranged from 25watts - 85watts per hour, It has 3 settings. Setting 1=25 watts, setting 2=55watts and then setting 3= 85watts. I use number 3 to pre heat my bed, the turn it off. When it's really cold I leave it on setting number 1 while I'm asleep. It would only use 200watts on setting number 1 for a nice 8 hour sleep... 285watts if you pre heated the bed for an hour first! the 8 hours of bliss!!! Honestly it's epic getting in a lovely hot bed xx

The only thing I see with permanent solar panels mounted on your vehicle is you have to always park in the Sun 🌞. So although they will charge your vehicle gets hot especially in summer you want to park in shade. If you have portable panels you can set them out in the sun and park in shade. The other reason why someone could steal your panels even though they are mounted while you are away from the vehicle. Hot water bottle fill and put in your sleeping bag/covers. Just venting window slightly using Mr Buddy Heater is fine. Turn off when you go to bed. Get a carbon monoxide detector for the car $20. Turn on car heater before bed to warm up then shut off. I've heard of putting a candle under a terracotta pot heats up the pot to warm up a space. Lots of ideas on Google. Stay safe and warm 💓

I went to Maine from NC for Thanksgiving and just got back home. I drove my ecoline E350 no build so no insolation. Had a camp cot, sleeping bag, and Mr heater buddy heater. Had to set it on high since the temp inside was below 20 degrees. Heater at low I didn't feel it when laying down but at high oh my god is was in shorts and a t shirt! Was amazing!!!! Slept like a baby! Cozy with promise of turkey! Get the buddy! Perfect for no build or minimal build! Set high if you have no insolation or low if you have some insolation. Perfectly safe if you crack the windows open a lil bit. Way better since you won't need to run the van for heat. The 2 van lifers next to me was jealous because they had to run their diesel sprinter vans and was still a lil bit on the chilly side! "Oh my.... that smells like $6.89 a gallon...heh good thing you guys can top off before rolling out right?! HA!!" I went to far so I got them breakfast and pugs sunglasses....I need to stop but they opened up for it but still I need to stop. Perfect strangers too so...yeah I'm toxic I know.... GREAT VIDEO THOUGH!

Been doing this for over 4 years but in Wisconsin. No stranger to cold nights. Have done 25° below zero fahrenheit in a vehicle with no auxiliary heat source. Currently using an old full-size window van. The vehicle heater is not much help below zero. Just enough to defrost the front windows. It will not keep the inside of the van warm unless you run it a couple hours without opening the doors. Sunlight during the day makes a big difference. I use 2 sleeping bags during cold nights. One inside the other. Nights below zero mean warm socks, sweatpants, a couple t-shirts and hand warmers in the bag with you. It's not that hard to stay warm while sleeping but when you get out of those sleeping bags and try to start your day it is not fun. Frost on the inside from your breath is a problem. I have a propane Buddy Heater but it adds to the moisture problem. 2 heat settings. On high you only get an hour or so out of a one pound cylinder. 6-8 hours on low but it doesn't raise the temperature much. Below 20° fahrenheit propane begins to be uncooperative. Electric heat is impractical unless you have a large battery bank. Uses too much energy. The answer for many people is a "Chinese diesel heater". Doubt I'll ever buy one. Can't stand the smell of diesel fuel or the exhaust. Most batteries have problems with extreme temperatures. The easy and relatively inexpensive solution is a bank of at least 4 golf cart batteries but they need to be outside the vehicle. Then you can run a small electric heater and not destroy the batteries. I have a small Jackery that I use for charging batteries and other low power consumption purposes but even a large solar generator will usually be too small for electric heat. Temperature extremes are a real challenge and that's when you find out just how strong/tough/indestructible and resourceful you are. As an addition to what I have mentioned there have been individuals who have installed small wood burners in vans. All of the heating methods require some forethought and there are safety risks to consider.

Have you considered getting one of those compact Chinese disel heaters? They work really well use only a little bit of power you can even run them off a car battery. Starting up I think it uses a couple hundred watts for a few seconds but after that it uses arround 4 watts. I live in a r v. Though not nomadic and I love the Heater I have and it can get very cold in Maryland where I am. You can get the Chinese disel heater on Amazon for arround 150.00. The one that's best is taller and comes in like a computer tower case with a digital display and control knob. It also comes with a remote. Much love ❤️ 🙏

Go down to Fortune Lake in Yuma until January when the Women's RTR starts. ( I love that you are such a genuine person.) I just left Quartzsite last week due to the cold. On the bright side, you have a dumpster 😍. The shower at the laundromat is clean and they give you a towel and soap and shampoo and I don't think it costs $10.00 😉 It's also a great laundromat (Do use the "High" setting on the dryer no matter what the attendant tells you). The attendant is very nice.

Also if you can find someone to install it a diesel heater would be great for your van. The exhaust goes outside so you don't have to be scared to use it like the buddy heaters. They're only around $160 on Amazon and they will definitely keep your van 60+ degrees

Hey I just found your channel, I Like going to lake Havasu AZ so I will share how I have figured out how to stay warm living in my car, 1st thing is layer up wear multiple layers of socks, pants, shirts and jackets and hats if need be you could tie a t shirt over your head and wear a beanie over that. 2nd any clothes that you don't wear layer them on top of your blankets extra bath towels are great blankets covers for extra weight to keep you warm. I have survived like that even in Washington winters years ago and didn't need to turn on heat. I work in southern California so it usually only goes down to high 30 s here during the winter I hope this helps I have been car camping most of my adult life.

Electric heat is tough to do in any mobile setup. Tip with the solar panels: lay them on your windshield and bungie cord them to the mirrors. When those door panels come off every clip is going to break. At least it did when I took mine off my astro van back in the 90s. Hope you get warm soon.

I was in Quartzsite a couple of weeks ago. When I arrived, it was in the mid-70's in the day and dropped into the 40's at night. A bit of a shocker but I got my RV furnace fixed and it was okay. But everyone needs some type of heating device if they're there in the winter. The people were wonderfully friendly and helpful there. It seems like the majority of people there are RV-lifers, Van-lifers, car-lifers, etc. It's a very RV-friendly town and area. Even if I don't buy a piece of land there, I will always drop by Quartzsite while in the area.

If you don’t mind the inside of your van looking like an aluminum foil burrito, I suggest you get a large roll of Reflectix and put that all around the bottom half of your interior. I use the 3M clear Velcro stick on tabs and I just cut them into halves so I get more out of them I cut Reflectix to fit for each panel area and then use the tabs to attach the corners and one in middle if it’s a large piece. That way you can easily remove them and roll it up when not needed and the tabs are reusable. People tend to think it’s the windows where you are losing heat but it’s both areas car has no insulation really. It looks like your window covers are some type of similar material. Just get that extra layer of insulation around so you can keep your heat in. Gives it a futuristic space vibe 😂. I’m a fan of the faux down comforter and I also picked up a faux fur skin that is 3x5 at Costco for 60$ and that thing is weighty and warm, I use it as extra coverlet and I feel like a Viking! 😂 Also it’s got vibe. Fellow Southern AZ RV’r. 🌼

I have a 1500 watt Jackery, and at night I plug in a heated mattress pad (which uses less electricity than an electric blanket), and I put it over me when I sleep (not under me), with another blanket over the mattress pad, to give it some weight. It gives me enough heat to sleep. I'm going to get a fleece blanket at Big Lots to go under me, to keep warmth in too. Oh, and I wear Long Johns under my sweats when I sleep too.

Start your vlogs as a short in portrait mode, 1 minute or less. Shorts get tons of views. For warmth, you're not starting up your van and running the heater before you go to bed? My shed gets down to 29 degrees in the winter. I wear two pairs of pants, wool socks, sleep with socks and shoes on, and three layers on my upper torso including a long flannel robe, under 3 blankets. Keeping your head warm is most key, with a beanie or a bunch of pillows. I suppose a cowboy hat could work in a pinch!

Hey, you know like you plug your mobile solar panels in to you solar generator... Well you could have a fixed solar panel on your roof that charges your generator. Doing this means you wouldn't have to pay for an additional battery and solar charge controller as you already have then built in to your solar generator. A rigid, fixed solar panel can be bought with brackets to fix to your roof (many people now bond the brackets with high strength adhesive, so you don't drill hols that can leak) The cable passes down a small water tight tube called "a gland" and into the van, then just plug in to the solar generator. A solar panel bigger that 200watts would speed up your re charging. It would be useful to know what the biggest solar panel wattage the solar generator can handle... email the manufacturers, they'll know.

Couple suggestions. Hand warmers under the covers by your feet. A 12v heated blanket under your sheet. And consider driving over to Imperial Dam and see if that meets your needs better. It is part of the LTVA group of options. Sleeping with a beanie and gloves help a lot also.

Imperial Dam has flushing toilets and showers. Drive to Yuma for laundromat and provisions.

Thanks for sharing here on the Tube! 😊. From what I’ve learned an electric 12 volt blanket. Hot pads and can you strap those panels into the roof while your parked? 🎉. Have a great winter

It’s not that bad once you have the correct blankets... thin and warm is the best... once you start getting too many of those fluffy blankets it gets very heavy and suffocating so try to keep it light and warm... and maybe a nice pad with a blanket or two underneath so you don’t get the cold from the car or whatever floor... it serves as a good insulator... but... blankets are what keep you warm... your own body heat... not an expert or anything but just some experience that may help a first over winterer 👍🏼 ...a tent with a tarp over it warms up a lot faster in the sun in the morning... unless you use your car heater that is...

There is nothing "romantic" about living like the pioneers when we have become accustomed to modern conveniences. Glad you are showing the complications and adversity that "soft" people are used to having.

Another van / RV lifer mentioned she and her husband used an unscented candle for heat ... with caution, of course, keep 🕯 away from drapes, blankets, etc. Stay so safe, please & thank you!

Haha at the pointy hat! As much as really cold nights (25 degrees or less) bothers me, I still prefer it over hot weather. Give me 25 degrees over 90 degrees any day. And those are really nice showers! "Spiritual" indeed. haha!

I can’t stand being hot. You can’t escape heat at night but you can cover up in the winter. Also use propane heaters it’s better.

Alyssa! Love your outlook on life. Positivity as always. I was car camping in Flagstaff last week, it got down to 13 degrees and my soul nearly left my body with how cold it was in my car 😂 you need a heated blanket, my little power bank keeps that thing going all night! I’d also recommend putting the Hot Hands packets everywhere on your body, they’re life savers. Stay warm and happy camping as always!
