Not that you're wrong, but you make it sound so simple. It's about making the character actually seem believable, which goes beyond "just do this" or "just don't do this". The problem that comes from writing self-inserts is that it tends to make authors, especially inexperienced and/or egotistic ones, unwilling to take criticism, because of how much of themselves (or rather, their ideal selves) they've inserted into said character. To such authors, any flaw to a self-insert is like a direct criticism to the author themselves, and they become more motivated to just gratify themselves, dispelling the audience's willing suspension of disbelief.

@@humrH2360 I'm speaking from personal exprince and I disagree , its not complecated at all , just make a character you self inserted yourself, but don't make it a mary sue or make it like it's always right and everyone always wrong, when it comes to criticism if the author's aren't welling to learn then it doesn't matter if they self inserted or not , again talking from personal exprince

Again, it would make a LOT more sense if Mandy had an older sister who was everything she wasn't: Beautiful, had powers like her mother, followed in her parents' footsteps as a superhero, and was socially confident. This would make Mandy feel self-conscious because she isn't like that, but what she doesn't realize is that, despite not being like her sister, her parents still love her. Also throw in the fact that her older sister feels a lot of pressure to perform well as a superheroine and is afraid of making one mistake and- If you're going to say this is exactly like Encanto, then you're on the money.

@@j3ssthealien283 Yeah, Stan Lee had said that J. Jonah Jameson was based off of himself. If you want a good Marvel superhero that's arguably a self-insert of the creator, Ben Grimm/The Thing (who has a ton of biographical similarities and shared personality traits with Jack Kirby) is a much better example. Spider-Man was written to be a relatable character to the comic audience more than being a self-insert of Stan Lee. Some of Stan's personality and background inevitably bled through a bit, but that's true of pretty much all characters that are written; they are inevitably going to have a bit of their creator in them.

It's sad because this story could've went in a more positive direction where Mandy has self-concious issues for not being as great as her mother with her own superpowers and even beauty. Starfire as a bad person? No way in hell. It seems far more likely for Mandy to be the daughter of Blackfire at that rate. A story about body positivity and self-love would've worked far better for a YA novel to help teens in the most vulnerable moment in their life rather than teaching them that hating your mother for the sake of hating her is cool. Having Mandy learn these traits and become a better person for it would've worked great, self-insert or not. I hate that the author went this route and really didn't want to handle any form of criticism for the writing. Any of these SJWs who actually give a shit about social justice should be willing to promote positive changes and listen to proper feedback about how to do it right. Body-shaming women to 'be a feminist' is not feminism, that's a sexist pretending to be a feminist.

He practically admitted he never had a concrete plot or story in mind and it was all just concepts and they were just building upon it as they go which is why the story sucked. He practically admitted that he was relying on the writers to make the story for him and all he had was the concepts of HGS. That interview really exposed the fact that there really was no plot to begin with and it's no wonder Raye blamed the budget for the writing issue since he didn't do much of the writing.

So Mandy tries to be her own person by changing herself to be different? She doesn’t care what other people think yet bases her decisions on what other people would think?
@Nightman221k2 жыл бұрын
I actually think Mandy's design isn't inherently bad (Yeah... I'm about to get killed over that opinion). In the comics Dick is on the shorter side for guys (he's sometimes listed as being around 5'7 and Jason Todd is almost always drawn as having grown taller than him) and Starfire used to love flying carrying him (honestly that was one of my favorite parts of the comics) so Mandy being a shorty is kind of cute, but it's just in some panels she actually looks nice where as in others she looks like she's drawn purposely to look bad. I like the hairstyle and eye shape she had. I think her hair at the end could have blended the natural hair color with her goth aesthetic better though. I do feel like the premise of the story could've been so much better than the finished product though. Starfire is one of my FAVORITE DC heroines, especially during the Wolfman/Perez era where they balanced her kindness with her emotional-intelligence so well. The idea of Kory and Dick having a daughter who isn't cut out for being a hero would be a story I'd LOVE to read/write. I'd have had Mandy's feelings about Kory feel fully explored rather than feel like a mouthpiece against supermodel heroines in skimpy outfits. I'd make Dick a dutiful dad who always tries to cheer Mandy up, and I'd have Kory be a parent whose sensitive nature accidentally makes Mandy feel like she's never going to amount to anything. Like Kory would be like, "Mandy you don't need to overdo this, you know I don't expect that of you" in a well meaning way to convey that Kory is proud of her no matter what but Mandy would take it to mean, "Mom doesn't believe I'm able to do anything." I'd do something to explain why she feels she can't be a hero in spite of how plenty of heroes in DC have no powers like say Mandy has anxiety or a low self-confidence or something. Kory and Dick's daughter would legit be the perfect character to explore this with cause they're the two MOST compassionate heroes and it could show how even really good parents can't be expected to make all the right choices. Stories about family struggles and them learning about and growing to understand each other is always a recipe for a good story.

Robins's death, causes all these negative emotions to start bottling up, due to her allies like beast boy, cyborg and raven are now missing from the picture in some way to. This depression started to dwindle at star, having just lost Nightwing to a villain or some other criminal, she fears that being her daughter is half-human, perhaps her powers will never develop, leaving them vulnerable to other villains who might take her away from her, leading to star becoming this overprotective mother, who does everything she can to ensure her daughter's safety, even if it means going against what they want, till eventually, her child finds comfort in her sister, Blackfire, who plans to turn them to her side while using them as a mortar to their revenge to get back at her own sister star

I feel the same way, for at least a couple reasons: 1. Mandy referring to Hamlet as "Whiny" is the ultimate textbook definition of the pot calling the kettle black. 2. Considering that Mandy IS an obvious self- insert, and considering that we learn Mandy and Claire got an "A" for rewriting the story in this way, that whole scene is Mariko Tamaki quite literally saying she's a better writer than WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE! Hey Mariko, if you ever hypothetically read this, there's a reason why William Shakespeare's works continue to be held up as literary masterpieces centuries after his death, and will continue to be regarded as such for centuries to come, whereas the overpriced toilet paper known as 'I Am Not Starfire' and the other crap comics you've written will be completely forgotten in five years' time (Other than occasionally when fanboys on KZbin feature it on "Worst comic books ever" lists): Shakespeare was an immensely talented author, whereas you clearly are NOT.

Honestly, I can relate to not wanting to look like a parent or other family member that you hate. On the other hand, this pathetic angst filled self insert has no reason for doing so. I don't believe FOR ONE SINGLE SECOND that someone overwhelmingly emotional and loving as Starfire would ever be cold, distant, or in any way unpleasant towards their child. Honestly, this story feels like a generic teen drama that Mariko Tamaki wrote before being hired by DC, and after they hired her she decided to just make the mom and aunt Starfire and Blackfire respectively and included the superpowers because with Starfire's presence as Mandy's mom, she had to have super powers in the story at some point.

@Nightman221k2 жыл бұрын
Starfire would never be so harsh as a mother. At least not in the original DC universe books or the Teen Titans cartoon (the two that Tamaki drew influences from). Comics Starfire would probably over-coddle a child who had no powers due to her upbringing (Blackfire was born without the ability to use starbolts like all other Tamarainans can and it's why Blackfire went vengeful and villainous) but to Mandy who would have been raised on Earth with a life surrounded by superheroes, it might end up making her think, "Mom thinks I'm incapable of being useful because I have no powers" rather than Kory intending it in a nurturing way. In the book though Starfire comes off as judgmental and dismissive and that's not who the character is.

Unfortunately, self-inserts kind of exist on a spectrum because of how characters often come from having a small piece of the writers within them. Obviously there's a huge difference between a self-insert like this one and a character where the only thing they have in common with the writer is that they both need to drink water to live, but my point is that having a part of yourself within your character isn't a bad thing on its own. I have considered saving characters that are the closest to self inserts as any characters used for the sole purpose of being killed (like as a minor character or random citizen killed to show power levels or attack mechanics or whatever) but then I would need be careful to not create obvious patterns if I need a character death to have any kind of impact lol.
@pubertdefrog2 жыл бұрын
So, how could I create a self insert character that is interesting enough to be the main character? Like, what if i were to have a self insert character but actually acknowledge the flaws of said self insert, and the decisions they make do have consequences/have a lasting impact. As someone who is not only on the autism spectrum, but also someone who wishes to write a compelling main character that is a self insert of myself (not 100% self insert obviously, but around 80%-90%). How can I improve the character being likeable, without getting rid of the importance of that self insert. Not many people outside of people on the spectrum know what it's like living with it, and i want to encourage people to think about what it's like (not too different from a character who is part of a minority, wether that be disabled, race, gender, sexuality, etc.) How can I do this effectively?

God, the romance hurts in this. OK, so I'm trying to get into writing Manga, and I've had to learn a lot of things. Despite my bread and butter being genres like Dark Fantasy, Psychological, Sci-Fi, Cosmic Horror, Military, and Political Thriller, I can at least tell you how to do romance, and this romance ain't it chief. It's also why these relationships in modern comics outright piss me off when being done by "Professionals": they sell it by the IDENTITIES, and not the characters. Admittedly, there isn't really.much difference between a straight and gay romance in a story as most of the algorithms match up; with the gay romance being more dependent on whether the two leads are Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual; primarily in understanding the differences in men and women amd how they communicate. Despite that, the bare minimum remains the same: you need characters that are different but mesh well to start, growth by themselves and together to forward it, drop in moments of growth where they learn more and come to care for each other, and finally have the big coming together and continuing steps 2 and 3 up until a projected end (ideally up to 3-4 volumes after, depending on format.) Bottom line is characters need to grow and learn with each other for a relationship to start, and the use of subtle messaging can indicate on whether it's something platonic or romantic. There's neither of that in this. In fact, these two are horribly miscast together because one's simply the lead's bland arm candy, and the other deserves to be tossed down the trash chute. They go through no shared experiences, affect neither of their own personal growth in any light, and have no personalities that both clash and mesh. OK, that last part's confusing. Let me break it down with an example: Kaguya-Sama (I would've gone with Yuri on Ice, but I haven't seen that yet) Both leads, Kaguya Shinomiya and Miyuki Shirogane, are prideful characters wuth different beliefs and backgrounds: one's a natural born prodigy and the other's a diligent hard worker that earned his position. And yet both share experiences in which they learn something more about each other that they can respect. Granted, they never admit this up until near their graduation, but they still grow by themselves and together. Miyuki learns to loosen up or that sometimes his methods aren't best, and that Kaguya can still make memories with the ones she cares about while they do the same (way to make me care about a broken phone.) They clash given their pride, because one wants to feel equal to the other. Kaguya wants the admiration of the boy who made himself something while coming from barely anything, and Miyuki wants the love of a girl born with everything. They mesh when trying to help their fellow students and council members, like when Kaguya finds out that Shirogane helped out two younger students with a charity drive. To put it simply: it's a focus on those little things.

But remember it's wrong to judge others on their appearance. Nevermind obesity is a problem. Does Mariko do a good job choosing friends? I'm going to guess anarchists and feminists are part of her life. Mariko has parental issues, and this comic is her getting therapy it. I'm going to guess her real friends just enable this behavior. None of them voice reasonable things like "Yeah they can be a little crude, but your parents just want you to be healthy and have a high quality of life." I can tell because they're all rebels and all about defying systems and tradition. Maybe her parents are jerks and are the reason she's overweight. I'm really wondering if modern feminists can even write a likable heroine? After all, heroes fight to preserve society and protect life, and feminists consider society misogynist/patriarchal and blame men for their problems. Who fights to protect a society and people you consider your abusers? Makes no sense. Also when you blame others for all your problems its generates this sense that you are perfect and entitled to things you were 'cheated' of, so that any criticism of you is wrong and you are entitled to power without a hero's journey or any responsibility when things go wrong. As a result you get Mariko/Mandy 'heroines' who are fat (not her fault, that's 'body shaming' by society! boo!), ugly (not her fault, that's sexist 'beauty standards' and catering to the male gaze! boo!), entitled to unearned power (she's perfect, shouldn't she have the most power?), lesbian (not by nature but because too good for men! boo, men bad!), and yet somehow entitled to admiration (why, exactly, does the 'hot' girl in school like her?). As a 'victim' of society its not up to her to take care of society, rather society should take care of her because she's got a vagina. Can you imagine anyone writing a fat, ugly, gay because women are gross, directionless male hero whose sense of entitlement was only eclipsed by his superpowers and expecting anyone to take it as anything other than parody?

@@xFlareLeon^This!!!^ It annoys me when people defend bad writing and unlikable characters with “It’s realistic.” First of all, most people don’t consume fiction to remind them of their reality. @@galvanizeddreamer2051 It was largely a late cold war residual trend of the French politically opposing American military efforts, particularly suggestions that Americans shouldn't have gotten so bent out of shape over 9/11. The only reason France is even still around to talk crap about us is _because_ of us. I know I’m going to get cancelled for saying this, but I am going to anyways. I believe that, if done differently, a lot of these plot points or “issues” could’ve worked out well. For example, I personally think that there’s nothing wrong with having a character mirror yourself, or even be a self-insert (see Dipper from Gravity Falls, which is meant to be a representation of Alex Hirsch when he was younger). However, when making these characters, you need to remember to give them flaws and write them from an outsider’s perspective. When adding in the Mc being queer, I think it’s amazing to have good LGBTQ+ representation. However, this doesn’t feel good at all (coming from an LGBTQ person). Not only is the romantic subplot irrelevant, but Mandy’s queerness is only shown to be a representation of how she’s different from Starfire, instead of an actual trait that Mandy herself possesses. I also feel like it’s very important to have fat characters, especially in areas where they may be underrepresented. However, to do so only to slutshame others is crossing a major line. It is no longer representation, but a degradation of those unlike the ones being “represented”. Also, a bit off-topic, but I also feel as if a lot of problems could have been solved if Starfire was written in-character. This comic is a gross misrepresentation of her character, and does not show what Starfire is meant to be at all.

Honestly I like your opinion and the same could be said about a gay character constantly putting down a straight character it’s hypocritical to shame someone sexually after all I’m Bi and some of Bi folk are shamed because some of us end up in a relationship with a person of the opposite gender instead of the same.

In reference to the art style, I want to point out something in the first few pages (and something shown in the first video if I'm not mistaken) is that upon Starfire's introduction, her thigh gap (?) is drawn oddly/kind of uncomfortably. I'm by no means calling Yoshi Yoshitani a bad artist - if anything, I overall love her art style - but in general it could use improvement. Of course there's the nitpick I mentioned but also what was said in this video. In an odd way I don't even hate 'I am NOT Starfire' but that's more because of my guilty pleasure of loving shitty, poorly written media (think Tommy Wiseau's 'The Room'). I think Mariko Tamaki could be at least a good if not a great comic writer. I love the idea of a plus-size WLW main character; if anything we need more characters like that because lets be real, there are people irl like that. The issue is exactly what you pointed out in your videos - it's poorly executed and immature. The self-insert aspect doesn't bother me as long as you're at least somewhat honest/give them at least some flaws. Hell, basically all of my DND characters are self-inserts to some degree. Like my Bard Tiefling is horny on main (original I know lmao) but a total coward in combat. My Druid Gnome is feral/chaotic as hell and it leads to impulsive decisions which while funny in some cases can lead to some serious damage if not monitored(deadasss with this character I ended up joining a weed cult it was fucking hilarious but she rose hell).

Hi my name is Ebony M'randa Dumpsterfire Raven Eilish and I have short ebony black hair (that's how I got my name) with choppy micro bangs and shaved in the back and glowing green eyes like limpid tears and a lot of people tell me I look like Mariko Tamaki (AN: if u don't know who she is get da hell out of here!). I'm not related to Billie Eilish but I wish I was because she's a major fucking hottie. I'm an alien but I'm short and stubby. I have pale white skin. I'm also a bitch, and I go to a boring school in a normal town where I'm in the seventh year (I'm seventeen). I'm a goth (in case you couldn't tell) and I wear mostly black. I love Hot Topic and I buy all my clothes from there. For example today I was wearing a black corset with matching lace around it and a black leather miniskirt, pink fishnets and black combat boots. I was wearing black lipstick, white foundation, black eyeliner and a giant nose ring. I was walking outside Titan Tower. It was snowing and raining so there was no sun, which I was very happy about. My preppy mom stared at me. I put up my middle finger at her.

I don't get Mandy's character here. She hates her mother, yet her crush is basically a watered-down version of her mother.

I think you mean Nightrunner. Nightwing is American, though he has Romanian roots.

Thanks to Jlongbone, I cannot read Lincoln's dialogue without hearing Gilbert Gottfried's voice.

about the ophelia thing… i’m an aspiring writer who despises how some men objectify and/or dumb down women in their writing. that being said, i am aware that there are many men who do not do this, & that there are many women who, for some unknown reason, do. your gender does not automatically make you good at writing characters of the same gender. it can definitely help but you shouldn’t be able to use not knowing how as an excuse especially in this day & age. the internet exists

Honestly, I think this could have worked but the execution was done very poorly and badly. An idea I had for something similar to this was making Star's daughter into something of a bad girl ( not the drinking, smoking and fucking kind before you comment anything). I mean a tough bad girl like always get's into fights ,as a short temper, have a hard time talking and expressing her emotions so she lash out, she's aggressive when it comes to fights to point maybe even writing that Starfire or Dick had to restrain her cause she was going too far towards a villain. Like make her something like the equivalent of a teenage Buttercup from the Powerpuff Girls. Design wise I would have made her into something like a skater punk girl like ripped jeans, tank tops, she fights crime so she wears fingerless gloves, keep her hair black with maybe green or orange highlights to show a connection to her mom and make her more muscular and tone compare to Starfire. Make her something like that which would then explain why Blackfire would want her on her side later on cause she would be an aggressive powerhouse. I just feel like you can make a story about the daughter of Starfire interesting if you put the time and effort into it.

I remember reading a fanfiction of a famous loveteam in my country and it has a self-insert of the author in some chapters but it was done so well because she made herself a comedic relief. She would show up in some chapters as a friend that says and does funny things and then never to be seen again. The overall story was also well-written and it ended up getting published as a book so I could see why it was successful. Goes to show that you CAN insert yourself in the story you're writing as long as you don't force your beliefs into the readers' throats or make yourself a mary sue

Personally The Lion King 2 Simba's pride did this story so much better. You did have a conflict of the overprotective parent. But you understood why that was happening. And they gave Kiara a personality of her very own. And actually gave her a good reason to not be around Simba. Something this comic book should have done

even teen titans go capture Starfire personality better than this comic. (I hate my self for saying that)
