the bummer is when the horror segments really start the use of shock value instead of subtle hints to unnerve just knocks me completely out of it.. There was a direction it could have went that would have been really creepy but the "horror" episode with mark and the hand man just seems so re-purposed slenderman like it really takes my imagination out of the series. To me there are better ways to really make a person feel fear. The handman is a cool monster but to present this so jarringly like this is one of my least favorite style of introducing the evil. Oh well.. at lest the production value is top of its game.
@houndsmaster344 жыл бұрын
@@ConsciousRobot i think that is the reason why the acting is so good, because its bad. Its reverse logic in a way. Like all these KZbin celebs who over react on their videos and end up looking totally fake yet they think people believe them. Something I noticed in hindsight: the luxury and overall high-class part of sophies descent/the series starts to go down and down and down as the videos go on. First we start off with her luxurious, glorious, almost stupidly opulent house with rich cars and a private jet, her own personal trainer, her own clothing line, all of this stuff that us 99% could only ever hope of achieving in our dreams. Then we see her try to spend one day with just 10 pounds (which she ends up "failing") but is still mostly focused around her business deal. *Then* it goes on to her mingling with the everyman in a nightclub lots of people go to, whether or not theyre richer than god itself before switching back to her going to a bougie upper crust party deal, decked to the nines and then some. Right after that it goes into Laras house, which seems like a normal, middle-class, nobodies business house that the average family could afford. After that? INSTANT drop into a dingy, dirty, boarded up and dark home that is devoid of any luxury and opulence. It's a slowburn thats pretty damn subtle and maybe not even intentional, but god damn is it good. Someone smarter than me could probably do some insane cool symbolism connect the dots bit with it.

I think it's like a grand for the clothing, another grand to rent the lambo, 4 grand (or you have a hookup) to rent the private jet and another few grand to rent the property. Then there's the camera equipment, the editing and the PCs plus staff pay. My best guestimate is 14K + paying the people involved, but there's a chance they just get a cut of the revenue or they are doing this as students or a group of friends/ARG fans themselves. If everyone had to get paid, we're probably looking at 20K all in all. Breakeven point at ~3.5 to 7 million channelviews. The large disparity is because I've only got guestimates on prices (and if people got paid already or not) and the pay for ads varies too. HOWEVER: The clothes could be left over halloween props/loaners, the lambo could belong to a friend or they could have a friend that works at a luxury car dealership and they borrowed it for an hour. They could have asked someone that's a fan of ARGs or just really generous if they can film on his private jet for an hour. (to create backstory) It's not exactly a tourist hotspot that house and certainly not in the November to January span of the year. So if they said they were enthusiasts and if they could please film there (perhaps for a bit of pay/exposure while there's a downtime, and you make sure to film carefully) that wouldn't be too bad either. If it's a group of friends doing it for the love of it and they already have access to cameras/computers and editing skills, that would basically be free too. So then we're looking at a grand or less and breakeven point of ~250K video views. Hope that helped. If it did not, I still had fun thinking about it, so no loss either way.

The transformation of Lara into Sophie is definitely an interesting one, and there's some very obvious symbolism there. It's easy for us to become anyone we want to become online. We can distance ourselves from who we actually are and dive head first into a constructed fantasy life. Lara is clearly introduced as a character who aims to do exactly that. It could be that that where Lara is living is not her house, or the cat thing could just be a pointless, arbitrary lie. Sometimes pathological liars will lie about things they have no reason to lie about. Maybe not being a cat person is just another aspect of the false persona she's invented for herself. Looking at the latest video from the channel, which includes clips of a shot-for-shot remake of the original trailer with Lara substituted for Sophie, that concept of living an entirely fabricated life seems to be the entire point of this series. Superficial and self-centered people like the both of them are a dime a dozen, and more are made every day. For all we know, Lara might not even be the first to do something like this in the reality of this story. Maybe Sophie herself had usurped someone before her, and Lara is only continuing an endless cycle.

You know what's funny...being from the UK I recognize the house she claims is 'her mansion' and I know for a fact it's a house that is rented out to film/tv studios, why? Because being a film student I was responsible for scouting filming locations for our college film which was meant to be a cluedo (or Clue to Americans) style murder mystery short film. The house was one of the locations, it's Broughton Hall and it's owned by the Tempest family (who I had to contact to ask prices on filming at that location and it was...lets just say out of a students budget, which is what they told me when I quoted what we could afford to spend), of which Sophie isn't a listed member.

I couldn't see it on the comments so... The pose Sophie makes while on her "throne" is a pretty clear reference to Bathometh most Iconic one, her head there is even crowned or, better, portayed with a halo over it and the logo is a pretty clear reference to Illuminati... Can't decide if these are easter eggs or something more but sure worth noting. Thank you so much Night Mind, you provide such good content, big cheers from Italy:)

With the triangles, it was used by the Illuminati (the real one) because of it's alchemical and religious iconography, so they could be referencing a lot of stuff there. Also, the hands of Baphomet in that pose are an alchemical reference as well. A familiar one, if you're into Found Footage Horror: As above, so below. The left hand pointing up is a reference by itself to something called "The Left Hand Path". So there's a lot here, in terms of references.

When we first saw Laura I thought she was actually Plum and that they were the same person, and that later vlogs would show Plum is actually a lonley girl somewhere imagining being Sophie's best friend to escape her humdrum life. And that later we would see Plum actually contact Sophie and try to be real friends with her, but she starts doing so in a manner that's creepy. Needless to say, the actual Laura and Plum dynamic that we have was a bit of a suprise- even though it probably was obvious to everyone else.

speculation time!: *so that throwaway line at the beginning that she said where she didn't know how her dad got super rich, not just a throwaway line, deal with the devil type thing, and her dad didn't trade off his soul, he traded off Sophie. *this is a double satire, not just of the dumb hypebeast culture stuff, but also of the amount of hate against them (from the tattoo on the hand), or triple, the third layer I can't decipher yet, because its a _severed_ hand that's on the monster's face with the HATE tattoo, not just the monster having the tattoo itself. *the next video is gonna be straight up Lara living Sophie's life, in like another vlog *(less speculation more just a comment) the actress that plays Sophie is actually pretty good, like when she was filming that final video, she had to act like she was distressed acting like she was fine, the layers on that is always very fun to see portrayed

this is my interpretation: the stalker really, really wants to be Sophie, so she contact with a paranormal creature (maybe a demon) to help her, and in the end she put her soul in sophie's body, so she could have everything she dreams. This could be a critic about the people how consume this kind of content. they are not happy with what they have, so they wach this kind of thing to dream with what they could have.

Sara Fontanini or Laura wasn’t actually a fan before the monster (Handyman?) got to her, but a prior victim or someone related to them. Sophie wasn’t vlogging long enough to give someone time to get that obsessed.I tend to think Laura was desperate not to have Sophie leave because she was afraid of what the creature would do if she didn’t keep Sophie there.

Was kind of hoping for a more gradual buildup before It Happened(tm), tbh. Maybe a couple of videos foreshadowing what happened to Plum, or more people around Sophie disappearing with clues left behind that Sophie was woefully too dense to recongnize/understand (leaving something for viewers to focus on as stuff unfolded). The abruptness of the most recent video isn't really my style, but since it isn't the end, there's plenty of room for something I might personally find more satisfying. As far as where it goes; I think it would be neat if Lara took over Sophie's life (potentially foreshadowed by her outfit at the end of the most recent upload). Going forward, social media posts and videos are created by Lara, and the world around her acts as if she's the real Sophie. As time goes on, parts of her new reality to gradually crumble as the consequences of whatever she did in order to steal Sophie's life come to pass. To keep viewers up to date with what is going on with the real Sophie, maybe they could include coded links to short unlisted videos, or hidden images showing us her status. At the end of the day, I'm more of a fan of either a slow burn/subtle ride or an immediate jump into the action/weirdness; and I tend not to like a middle ground as much for pacing reasons. I'll probably briefly keep up with it to see what they do, but this might be the type of series that either isn't for me or that I wait for completion of before binge-watching. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@perlasmermaid58124 жыл бұрын
Maybe the slow burn was making people tune out of the channel, so many horror fans would just gloss over at the thumbnails because it looked too close to the real life Instagram BS
@BaneKeldare4 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of problems I've noticed with unfiction is that a slow burn can lead to burnout before anything major or gamechanging can happen, and when that thing does happen, the audience can lose interest unless they're __really__ good at capturing an audience's attention. The timing also matters if the bulk of the story is set to be told __after__ that specific event, which I think is what's going to happen here. I'll be honest and say that I hope this isn't over by a longshot. A series like this that starts out hard right out of the gate can have a lot of potential.
