Not only does short form content decrease the profit of content creators, it also decreases the general attention span of the viewer and ability to comprehend longer videos, basically making them brain dead and addicted to consuming as much useless information in the shortest amount of time possible.

I’m really glad you’re speaking about this.

@ssp_c2 күн бұрын
Part of it is the algorithm, but it’s more so the people using it. Generally, short form content is much more addictive because it’s all videos you cram into minute long shorts or less, therefore it’s more content you can consume in a short amount of time. This, as well as KZbin plastering shorts content all over the place with recommendations based on what you watch, results in more people using shorts, and as a result your content is likely exposed to more people and rewatched because shorts don’t scroll automatically. Not to mention, judging by your name I assume you’re an ASMRtist. People are probably falling asleep to your shorts lol

Because they have a monopoly and no actual competition. However, what it is actually doing is making people turn away from it. And they were right, the reason Tiktok got so big is because it was so different. But now, so many of us are craving longer form videos. Plus a lot of us are becoming smarter consumers, and aren't supporting businesses that don't actually support people. KZbin, and a lot of these social media companies are playing a very dangerous game. Thinking that people won't drop them, but fail to realize. They created a problem in the first place

Thanks for this video man. I run my own tutoring business and was planning on using youtube shorts as an easy means to provide fun content for my students as well as educational help. I don't necessarily think I won't do that, but I am going to be a bit more careful about how I approach shorts content now at the very least and temper my expectations. However, I do want to point out, youtube and youtube shorts are a lot better these days if you have your own actual business and just use youtube as a side hustle to advertise for something that already exists and really works. I think this video should be seen as a red flag to anyone who wants to "grow up and be a youtuber!" as a career. Maybe, just maybe, you should focus on getting an actual career set up, and then come back to youtube as an EXTRA ASSET once you have everything else established. This idea that your entire career is being a content creator isn't going to last forever. I have said this before and i'll say this again, the easy money for content creation is going to go away as time proceeds on, and I thank jojo here for following the social experiment's decline so honestly. Edit: Asmr took off during covid. Less people are watching internet content because we are back outside and enjoying life, especially here in America where we hardly took Covid seriously to begin with. I also want to point out the sheer -saturation- of the ASMR field. It used to be just a few big creators, now there is a huge swath of small, unknown creators who can "just tap" on something. Now, I will fully admit, ive watched gibi's roleplays, same with yours, and other long form asmr videos, and I have to say those are absolutely amazing and super high quality. However, it doesn't matter when you've got 20 other people next to you in line all whispering and tapping at the same time. The reality is ASMR boomed over Covid because it was somewhat new and there was ample room for it in peoples lives. Now, Covid is over, people are off living their lives again, and as part of that everyone over Covid saw how "easy" the skill floor was for entry to be an ASMRtist and jumped on it. My best advice to anyone who is not into youtube and is considering it, don't. Go be a plumber, go be an electrician, go run your own business, be something that isn't entertainment and adds actual value to the economy. If you do that like I do with education, then you'll never deal with this sort of uncertainty and have way more freedom while you are at it.

It is definitely a corcerning topic. But im less concerned about how it's effecting content creation right now, and more concerned about how the upcoming generation is currently spending their childhood on this rapid cycle of constant quick dopamine hits. The aftermath of depleting kids from attention span growth could be catastrophic, and is becoming a closer and closer issue. How is this gonna affect gen Alpha's ability to do basic stuff like go to work or drive? It's an increasingly obvious bad idea, but no one actually involved cares. The kid gets their dopamine, youtube gets their money, and the creators get their interactions.

Sadly, shorts don't require as much commitment from the viewer, so it's easier to get people to watch that, I still do think your videos are amazing, but I'd like to see you revisit some of the ideas you based your videos on in 2020-2022, I don't know how to explain in but those have that vibe to it that the newer long form videos don't have on your channel. Best of luck!❤

I really hate it because I’ve noticed how easily it sucks you in. I come on KZbin to try and search something up but get distracted by a short or even when I get on KZbin sometimes it instantly plays a short. It’s really quite disturbing. It’s really effected me.

I'm sorry you're having to struggle between short and long form content. Long form is the way to go. That's what I watch most from your channel. I agree with some comments, short form is just a response to short attention spans, which is unfortunate. Anyways, I love your content. Keep on keeping on my good man!

That’s WILD that you have gotten $0 from TikTok. I had no idea there was no Creator Fund for Oceania creators 😮

when it comes to ASMR, im very much connected to the mid-length and long form content mode, but i use shorts far more for comedy, and other stuff. but i can feel it ruining my attention span.

I truly am devasted by the addition of shorts on youtube. I put timers on instagram and tiktok because i truly felt a decline in my attention span and mental health. I refrain from the timers for youtube on my phone because there are those longer form of content that i grew up on and still love to watch. I wish there was a way to silent or disable yt-shorts because i still keep youtube as a way to escape it/ease back into longer forms of content. However, like ppl have been saying, these short videos are straight up addictions, and with it being right there/the first thing that starts playing when i open my app, i fall right back into it
@clementina33502 күн бұрын
Shorts won't be the first thing that play when you open the app if you remove shorts you've watched from your history. I watch shorts from time to time but always make sure to remove them from my history later. It is tedious, yes, but that's what actually stops me from consuming too much of short content: I'll have to manually delete all these shorts from my history later. It's also great at showing you just HOW MANY shorts you've watched throughout the day (most of them being completely pointless).

@clementina3350 thank you! I'll definitely start doing that, I know the algorithm is reactive, I just didn't know how to cancel/ counteracts it

I actually found you through short content. I forgot which clip in particular, but it led me to searching you up on KZbin. Since then, I'll watch your long content. Matter of fact, I almost never see your short content anymore unless I'm doom scrolling through shorts.

When you search up ASMR on youtube, you find like 20x more shorts than videos

I've noticed that Gibi ASMR has been doing fewer shorts for possibly the same reason. She does have a second channel called Gibi Rest Stop that compresses the long content videos from her main channel into about 2 minute videos that are not shorts, and she includes the link to the full video. They are less of a time commitment for when I'm looking for entertainment during the day, but I still watch the longer videos for sleep. A second ASMR channel similar to Gibi's could be a solution to this. Shorter videos, but not shorts.

I think shorts are really better for promotion imo since the views are high but the revenue is low. I think they’re good for picking up a few new viewers since it appears while their casually scrolling, but definitely should not be the focus since it’s not profitable.

Hey Jojo. Been watching you for a couple of years, keep it up - I am a KZbinr with 76.9k subscribers, who used to make shorts on a game called geometry dash. This is exactly what has happened to me. In 2022 my channel got insanely popular from YT shorts. I got so popular that my most popular yt short is to this day sitting at 19 million views. At this time period I was ecstatic about my growth. I was 12 at the time. However, over time my channel started to die, because my content became repetitive. However, at first I wasn't so sad about it, as I thought "well, at least I still have this huge sub count. I can definitely still get some views if I start making long form content (My channel was solely based on yt shorts) Well, my long form content never peaked above 2k views. And that came from excessively advertising some videos: Most of my videos never passed 300 views. Then, I gave up. I quit. I haven't made any videos on my channel in several months, just because my channel is so dead. All those shorts subscribers I gained did not bring in any views into my long from content. Every single one of my yt shorts subscribers just straight up forgot my channel even existed. I wish I never made shorts and just was a bit more patient. I believe I could've had a decent sub count and a great community if I had just never gone down the yt shorts path.

As someone with ADHD, I've noticed consuming short form content on the regular has greatly affected my attention span and my ability to retain information. I've been trying to limit how much I use TikTok and YT Shorts (both of which I still enjoy from time to time) so my studies don't suffer and, more importantly, my mental health.

If I could go back in time, I would stop short form content from existing. No joke, it’s always in the back of my mind. I take a 2 minute shorts break and realize that it’s 10’ to midnight and I haven’t gotten a single thing done. We practically inhaled tiktok in 2020, but back then it was justified. Now it’s masquerading as a necessity when we actually have things to do now. With all of this in mind paired with the fact that it is killing long form content, I just want to erase it. (The 10’ to midnight thing was an exaggeration. Just wanted to point that out to anybody who thought I was a vegetable.)

Got no idea if he checks the comments here but Jojo I have been recycling the same 30ish videos of your “worst reviewed” playlist for the past 3 or so years now and I am desperately in need of more worst reviewed videos, as it seems those types of funny asmr content is the best for me to sleep listening to. I’ve tried different creators’ “funny” asmr videos such as Angelica, but your videos seem to do the job best. This is a cry for help. Please.

I've seen so many creators on short form content have "healthy" appearing channels where they achieve a few million views per videos consistently, yet make very little from it. Additionally when they then try to diversify their content, the algorithm just stops promoting them. Shortform content simply doesn't create the viewership base which long form content does. This means you're even more significantly a slave to the algorithm. Not to mention the algorithm is super sporadic and sometimes just chooses to stop promoting peoples videos.

I work for a large content creator and we came to the exact same conclusion as you last year. Shorts just do more harm than good in the long run - at least they did for us. I would not blame you one bit for stepping away from them altogether.
@xjolly1889Күн бұрын
I completely agree with you. The problem with shorts is that it doesn’t specifically translate to long term content and would ruin a Channel. That’s the problem with shorts. If you started with that then you would’ve never scratched the surface of the subscribers and revenue that you would’ve. Don’t do shorts content. It will kill your channel in the long term

The fact that even live streams are vertical pisses me off. Not to mention that Shorts are also not monitored well AT ALL. I have literally seen content that was VERY Graphic, UNCENSORED btw in shorts. I love my long for videos.

i feel like the way to utilize and keep conversion rate atleast decent (idk wtf im talking abt just an idea) is to instead of dedicating time to short form content, to just clip long form videos and make them shorts, and then advertising where that short came from, usually when I see a short and find out its a clip, if i like it enough ill go watch the video. again just an idea, i genuinly really hope this helps but eh

Its scary to see how short form content(and social media in general) has affected my personal attention span. Ive always been stuck on my phone since i was a teenager; severe social anxiety made the internet my safe space. Its a tough thing to break out of. And i feel fortunate enough to be the age that I am, because if I was younger when these type of videos began it would be even cemented into me and it would be impossible to break that habit. The trend towards shortform has been affecting many aspects of internet culture/human behavior and its definitely a bit scary. Extreme consumerism adapted into the currency of attention. People(especially kids) just continuously consuming fast, easily digestible content for hours and hours will surely have and has had many negative effects on them. I wonder what studies will begin to show about this phenomenon. Theres already talk about how it hijacks your dopamine and basically gets you addicted

i thought this will be about the increasing amount of gross medical animatics that plague the shorts...they sell as ASMR, but i guarantee that no person actually falls asleep to those videos
@laserharald31452 күн бұрын
Besides that KZbin should bring back polls and links of other channels, I maybe have an idea to solve that problem. After every month youtube should make a fix payment for every hour people have watched their content and also at every video lomg or short instead views there should be show hours of viewing this content because then obviously short form content would have way less and the significance of long form content would rise again. I dont know if it‘s perfect but I think it‘s smart because watching 50 mins of a video is very different than seeing 40 secs and scrolling by.
